| The term "suspect" is a term of art--the press won't generally refer to anyone as anything other than "a suspect" or "the alleged killer" until that person has been proven guilty in a court of law. This is even if there are 500 eyewitnesses, the crime is caught on tape, and everyone knows 100% he's the guy who did it. It's just a term you have to use until the wheels of justice come full circle.
So, to answer the question, he's not "just" a suspect simply because the press calls him that, although he is merely a suspect until proven guilty in a legal sense.
I'm pretty sure this was a revenge killing of the correct cop-killer by the police, justified or not. They definitely took out their aggression on him, and people with that kind of authority and power doing so makes me uneasy, regardless of how scummy the "suspect" may be.
