| AMD had a compelling product from 2002-2005. Remember the Athlon XP and Athlon 64?
In fact, once the Athlon 64 was released in September '03 it was Intel who had the inferior product. That's why Intel resorted to unfair sales tactics that essentially prevented AMD from gaining market share and ended up crippling AMD's ability to keep up with Intel's Research & Development.
Intel likely would have continued to stuff consumers with crap products like Pentium 4's had they not been faced with a competent competitor like AMD. Unfortunately for AMD they can only compete in the discount aisle with Intel these days... Flag this | Edit this post |

| Don't forget the unique control scheme. I can just imagine the potential of the motionplus for sports and first person shooters, or even a star wars lightsaber game.
@breakspirit
You realize consoles don't make money based on how much you play the system? Instead the big money makers are peripherals and obviously the games themselves. While many of the games for the wii lack much replay value, they still sell well because most people want to try out the new mario kart, the new super smash game, or the new zelda game. Not to mention, Nintendo has so many exclusives there's always a new game on the horizon that you won't be able to experience anywhere else.
The beauty of the wii is that it is the only console that caters to casuals, but it doesn't entirely ignore the core gamers. Core gamers are getting older and most play a variety of systems, so even if the wii collects dust most of the time, they eventually come back and buy new games whether it's for nostalgia or because these are games they've been looking forward to for years. | The problem with Doom 3 was entirely due to boring 1v1 or 1v2 battles with no variation, plus the gimicky monster behind the wall crap every 5 minutes. Another annoyance I had with Doom 3 was the lack of a monster "stun" animation when they were shot (i.e., shotgun shell point blank into an imp wouldn't prevent him from swinging his arm and clawing you).
The original Doom had epic battles where you'd fight scores of monsters at a time, AND when the monsters were shot you could stun them so you wouldn't have to deal constantly with getting knocked around.
All I can say is Doom 4 better bring back the massive scale battles or it will be another poor sequel. Flag this | Edit this post |

| For someone preferring to see the "happy, positive, glass is half full" side of things your comment is completely negative and really contributes nothing related to the article.
The wii may not be an enjoyable gaming platform for some males ages 16-29, yet it clearly meets a need that was previously unfulfilled for the majority of people, hence its amazing success.
The wii's main advantage is that rather than compete over a shrinking gaming demographic why not expand the gaming industry for previously ignored demographics at a more affordable price. Girls, adults, children, while at the same time appealing to many of the core gamers wanting to play exclusive Nintendo titles.
I'll admit most 3rd party titles for the wii are junk, but it isn't Nintendo's fault. These developers were lazy and caught off guard by the wii's success so they made trash PS2 ports, or rushed titles that were garbage. Regardless, Nintendo is still the world's largest game developer with a lot of the most successful gaming franchises of all time and eventually 3rd party development will catch up and put out better quality titles. | I'll take a stab at explaining the wii shortage.
There are significantly more people who want wii's than the available supply. Demand 100x > Supply = no supply (me analyst no understand??)
All the weak dollar means is that the wii shortage will continue for an even longer period of time than had the dollar been stronger.
If Nintendo can make 50% more profit by selling the same system in Europe versus the U.S., what incentive do they have to send more systems here, and how exactly does that indicate the wii shortage should be nearing an end in the U.S? Flag this | Edit this post |

| All I want is a keyboard and mouse for consoles.
Developing games on PCs seems pretty inefficient these days comparing high-end to low-end and mainstream. Even though consoles are relatively mediocre at least there is some form of a "standard" so developers can push those systems to the limit.
PC gaming was only cool back in the day when they were significantly better than consoles. Lately, consoles have improved pretty dramatically at least visually, so I think that's why the PC gaming market has been hurting (other than MMO's and The Sims that can't be played without a keyboard and mouse) on consoles. | It isn't really the Japanese people who are causing this sell-off. Few people know the MINIMUM number of shares you can buy in Japan (for Nintendo) is 100 and they are priced at Google-like levels of $450+/share.
If you look up NTDOY.PK at finance.yahoo.com you might say, but wait it says $55/share or whatever. Well, the U.S. ADR (American Depository Receipt) stocks are valued at an 8:1 ratio to the Japanese stock.
Basically, if you're a Japanese investor, you have to be willing to fork over the equivalent of ~$44,000 (at the current LOW) just to be an investor in Nintendo. This policy was made with the intention of reducing needless fluctuations in stock price due to average joes buying up shares and not knowing what they're doing. Flag this | Edit this post |

| While the drop in stock price makes me a little nervous, I know the recession concerns are unwarranted.
The real reason for the drop is the very high ownership percentage of Nintendo stock by institutional investors >90% (banks, insurances companies, hedge funds). Most of these guys were hit hard by the sub prime loan business so they've had to sell-off stock to raise capital and Nintendo (among others) happened to be part of the collateral damage.
I think once the selling settles down, there should be a nice opportunity to get in and get some shares at a discount. Nintendo is going to continue to report record financial results and the stock will eventually rebound. Flag this | Edit this post |

| So Toshiba paid for ONE ad in the 4th quarter. (A regular 30 second spot is $2M.)
I don't care for Sony, but blu-ray is clearly the superior format. The only knock against it compared to HD-DVD is that it isn't region free and manufacturers have to retool to build blu-ray discs.
The maximum bitrate for blu-rays is significantly higher than HD-DVD, so properly encoded, every scene would support more data (resulting in better visuals, audio, etc.)
HD-DVD is the redheaded stepchild that nobody likes. Link: http://www.diffen.com/difference/Blu-ray_vs_HD_DVD Flag this | Edit this post |

| I'm just disappointed wii doesn't have Rock Band =( so I might just have to get a PS3 at some point.
Wii is still gonna sell the most, even more than the PS2 over its life. Wiifit is going to be a massive hit worldwide just wait... Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Rex Grossman is the only reason why I believe McNabb's quote about there being racism towards black QB's has any merit. I guarantee no black QB could play as badly as Rex did and stayed as a starter lol. Flag this | Edit this post |

| All I can say is that once I saw the Tokyo Game Show coverage of the wii last summer I believed it was going to be a hit. The low price point, the innovative (some say gimmicky) controller, and the fact that the wii was actually profitable were all factors that encouraged me to invest.
Just watch now though, I mentioned this earlier, but I'm certain Nintendo's 4th quarter results are going to crush all their previous earnings estimates. Even at these lofty prices I'm trying to pick up a few hundred more shares (at the best price I can manage) cus I'm anticipating at least 50% more growth left in this stock over the next 6 months. | It still isn't too late to invest in them imo.
I bought the stock at $31/share when it had a year end target of $26 hehe. I just wish I had been able to afford more shares back then. I guarantee once their 4th quarter results come in that the stock will have another pop, so when the stock tops $100/share you'll be like damn wish I had bought at $70.
Then just hold til at least March '08 or hopefully a full year to get the cheap long-term capital gains tax rates. =) Flag this | Edit this post |

| Maybe instead of complaining these 3rd party developers should've bought Nintendo stock lol.
These guys can't be anymore off the mark, this Christmas is going to be Nintendo's new all-time sales record. Even at $70+/share (American Depository Receipt price) the stock is a bargain because they are going to crush their earnings estimates once again.
Is the unprecedented 11 months straight of sold out wiis simply a fad? I hope this article scares away some investors (for the time being), so I can buy some more shares for cheap. Flag this | Edit this post |
