| | I wasn't really happy with the idea at first, but if people are dumb enough to spend real money on items in a game that is _all about finding items_ after the first playthrough, it's pretty smart of Blizzard to let me make money off of them without anyone having to go to sketchy Chinese sites. I was lucky enough to have one of those disk drives that was about as powerful as the C64 itself... so much better than tape drives, but you needed to replace the ROM with a fastload cartridge or (as I learned years too late) a program, otherwise it ran at 20% speed or something.
And of course as kids we thought nothing of cutting holes in the disks so we could store another 180kb on the back of every disk.
Hilarious. Good friggin times indeed :D Flag this | Edit this post |

| Oh. After perusing their site:
* Explore a dark, story-driven campaign that can be played solo or cooperatively with two players on the same console or via Xbox Live
Two players max, no mention of net play on PC. Oh well. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Borderlands was a huge example of consolitis, and it was all the more galling because they explicitly stated that it wouldn't be. I'm sure the 70-degree FOV is great for the gamer sitting on the couch across the room, but it's myopic if not outright headache-inducing on a 16:9 screen a couple of feet away. Four major patches and over a year later, and the workaround is still to bind the correct FOV to your forward key, since it resets to 70 every time you sprint or get in a vehicle. Unbelievable. Don't even get me started on the UI.
Steam and WoW feel like the major reasons there's any PC gaming at all these days. Vandy, you didn't happen to have a dwarf hunter on Icecrown-US, did you? :P Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I've heard about that--I reserve judgement til they reveal a little more about what's going on, but I really don't see how they can make it any more successful this time around. Will they honor the old lifetime subscribers? I doubt they're obligated to, but those people won't be very inclined to give the game another chance if they don't. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | The customization looks insane, no doubt about it, but there just doesn't look like anything to do once you're in. I wonder how many of their initial sales are going to keep subscribing past the first fifty hours... Flag this | Edit this post |

| Performance is good, but it's too hot and probably too loud.
Ah well, I always find the evolutionary vid card generations more compelling purchases than the revolutionary ones. By the time they refine the hardware there might be some software to take advantage of. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Looks very promising. I'm rocking an Opteron 165 at the moment, but I think I can hold off on upgrading until the platform's been refined a bit. Those motherboard prices are galling. The CPUs themselves are already pretty reasonable though. Fingers crossed they both drop a lot in 2009. :P
I still don't understand why they didn't call it a Core 3 Quad. Would people be so confused as to think a Phenom X4 was better? Flag this | Edit this post |

| The wilderness in Japan is a lot closer than you think: Mt.Fuji is less than 80 miles from downtown Tokyo (well, less than 130km because it's Japan).
Doesn't invalidate your points; it was pretty wild watching broadband over there jump from 128k ISDN in 2000 to 1.5, 8, 12, 26mbit over the course of about three years for a negligible increase in cost. Flag this | Edit this post |
