| Please be warned that with the 1.1 patch, Skyrim is linked to Steam, so using mods that alter the .exe will break your game. (fortunately there is a new work around for the +2GB LAA memory patch)
Other than that I agree 100% with the review.
The "dumbing down" of the mechanics actually works well considering how the system worked before. Instead of having to power manage skills and attributes, you really only just have to play as you want and make perk choices. You actually have more freedom and choice for character customization now compared to Morrowind and Oblivion, without being tied to their ridiculous leveling mechanics.
The worst problem I can find (in addition to the power leveling of smithing you brought up) it the worthlessness of Stamina and Mana upgrades.
Put every level upgrade into life, and you will be fine, even if you are a magician.
With enchanting you can reduce mana costs to the point that spell costs are minimal. (some schools can even be reduced to zero)
Melee damage output is so ridiculously high, and kill synchs are so frequent that not being able to power attack really doesn't make a difference for a melee focused character.
Also, with the steed guardian stone, there is no problem with the dungeon crawl looting in full heavy armor.
The biggest problem I have is restarting new characters all the time to try different things out. :) Flag this | Edit this post |

| For my two-handed guy, he forged a legendary Ebony sword, and I decided to skip enchanting it so he can instead use the full level 3 Whirlwind thu'um. Holy mother, he can swing that sword almost twice every second....
I'm going to make my Sorcerer and finish the game now. He'll summon attronach pets, use bound items and defensive spells, because smithing is tantamount to cheating in this game. ;)

| Yes and no
Your causality is a bit distorted.
Elemental bombed because Brad was too involved with Impulse, and because they had to beat Civ 5 to market.
We'll see with Fallen Enchantress I guess. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Brad is an engineer in addition to being the business decision maker...
I can see how he would take the opportunity to sell it completely off so he can do the things he wants.
He still needs to convince Chris Taylor of GPG to do 1 more patch for Demigod. ;) Flag this | Edit this post |

| 1) Graphics are pretty much all around awesome for open world.
2) No insane moon hopping, so you really do feel like you have to trek to places you haven't been. (terrain also works against you)
3) The dumbed down leveling mechanics actually work out well, as I am not spending any time power leveling my skills. I just play how I want, and I get levels and perks.
4) Not missing the spell making. It's nice just having spells that do stuff, and you use them if you want.
5) Enchanting is awesome :D
Complaints
1) The UI needs to be fixed on PC, it is VERY BAD.
2) Some of the quests seem rushed, and just finish anti-climatically with alot of loose ends. Compared to others where you're thinking "WOW THIS IS AWESOME!" so the bar is set high in some instances and you are really let down on some others.
Overall,
Best Elder Scrolls, and I can't think of a better RPG Ive played.
I will probably be spending alot of time with this one. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Limited desk space, not really a need for anything bigger.
It's also a wide screen.... so it doesn't really feel like a true 19 inch, like my last one, a Samsung 931c, which was a great gaming LCD. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | No need to worry... I saw some dev posts that showed they were done a few weeks back, but not all the localizations were done. Now they are officially gold, so I guess they couldn't announce gold until all localizations were done. Flag this | Edit this post |

| No nearly as much as I used to. I would say 3 years right now for main individual parts... but this is going to further increase after my next upgrade I am sure.
1) CPU makes almost no difference for games or non-engineering applications. Infact, since more and more engineering type applications are incorporating CUDA and OpenCL now, high end CPU becomes less of a factor as time goes on.
2) Video cards are so ridiculously powerful, that the price premiums for high end cards are not worth it. If you are running a 19 inch monitor, there is no need to spend more then $150 on a video card to get maximum settings at your native display rate.
3) Ram is always dirt cheap, and the premiums on fast ram make little difference. As long as you have enough, that is enough. 4Gbs is enough right now, has been for awhile. I don't see a need for more than 8GBs 5 years from today.
*****************************************
My next CPU upgrade will be to Ivy bridge with 8GBs ram (with the option to expand to 16GBs+ if there is some unforseen reason to up it). I expect it will last 5+ years now.
I upgraded my video card last year to a 460 1GB (got it from newegg on sale for $120 with a $20 rebate). Before that it was an 8800GT from 3 years ago for $180. The 460 has ridiculous CUDA crunch power, and alot of my engineering apps I use professionally are actually faster now.
I see no reason really to upgrade it anytime soon, until I can't max settings for my monitor's 1680x1050 max resolution, and the next CUDA architecture is out.
So maybe a new video card 2 years down the road from today? Flag this | Edit this post |
