| There were big advantages when we switched from VHS to DVD and it was not because of resolution change. In fact, there were no resolution change. They were both NTSC. The reason DVDs became popular was because it was the first digital format of a movie available to consumers. It doesn't degrade over time, so you always get that nice crisp look even after several years. And what I think is the most significant among average users is that it's more compact (ever heard of people putting their VHS collection in an album?) Heck, even the player can be compact. For the manufacturing side, it's heckuvalot cheaper to produce. No more long reels of magnetic tape. It's easier to reproduce a master copy (imagine that on VHS). It's versatile in a way that it can be used for data storage.
Now if you compare DVD to HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, what are the new features? Higher-Resolution.... And that's about it. Sure it can hold more data, but for movie-watchers, do you think they care about that? Flag this | Edit this post |

Everytime I see news like this from Sony, it makes a lot more sense everytime: Sony is desperate for a large install base. I mean, think about it. PS3 is not just regaled as the latest and greatest gaming machine anymore. It's reaching out to different market including home theater enthusiasts and casual PC users.
For practical reasons, this is not going to work. I mean sure, there will be some who thinks an all-in-one machine is great, but for the most part, what people like are options for different functions. Another reason is that there are just some folks who thinks that an all-in-one device is not necessary simply because they don't need it. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | What a freakin troll. First of stand-alone HD-DVD players are going for $500. And secondly, not everybody is looking forward for an HD-DVD on an Xbox360.
