| | I believe that Obama pushed for a similar approach, a government option that would compete directly with private health care. That option was pulled about 6 months into the debate. I don't know for what reason, but suspect that it had something to do with some serious lobbying efforts on the part of the medical establishment and insurance companies. | Unfortunately US politics has become so divided that no Republican will support a Democrat sponsored law, even if it was a Republican idea. And vice verse. Even if it was perfect legislation, I don't believe it would have received broad political support.
Tell us the pros and cons of the health care in Spain, even though I know it isn't free. You pay for it somehow. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Under Clinton congress tried to do something 10 years ago. Under Bush the issue was left to fester like an open sore for another 8 years. Now, under Obama, congress debated it for a full year. It may not be perfect legislation, but as far as I can tell, it's the absolute best we can get for now. As with all laws, it will be amended over time to adapt to economic and medical realities.
The state of health care in this country was headed for a national tragedy. No one likes huge federal debt. But there are lots of places the Federal government can trim expenses. The health and welfare of the American people shouldn't suffer because few members of congress know how to balance a budget.
More than half of the federal budget goes towards military (reference attached) expenditures (past and present). It seems only reasonable that we could save some money there.
Our tax dollars are WASTED every second of every day. And now people are going to take a stand against government spending on THIS issue???? It makes no sense to me. Link: http://www.warresisters.org/pages/piechart.htm Flag this | Edit this post |

| We're not making public policy here, just expressing an opinion.
I've been self sufficient for 25 years. Last year I was paying $1250 a month for my medical insurance, and not one of my doctors would even accept insurance any more because they had to employ more people to handle the insurance claims than there were doctors in the office. Every trip to the doctors came out of my pocket. In 2008 I paid out $23k in medical (including insurance). Worst than that was the constant fear that at any moment the insurance company could cancel our policy and we'd never be able to get new insurance without the exception of pre-existing conditions. Not to mention, up until yesterday, with my daughters medical history, she would never be able to get medical insurance.
Until you have first hand experience with a serious medical condition you can't understand the how broken our existing system really is. Flag this | Edit this post |

| You won't like this legislation if: you aren't sick, haven't been sick, or know anyone who has been sick, don't have to buy your own insurance as in independent or small business, haven't been denied coverage by the health insurance industry, don't have any pre-existing medical conditions, don't like to pay taxes, don't like to be told what to do (even though you do what you're told every day of your life), think that the US government f's up everything they put their hands on, believe that universal health care is some sort of communist/Marxist conspiracy to overthrow the American way of life.
OTOH, you'll probably like this legislation if you believe that illness does not discriminate, and that everyone should be entitled to good affordable health care, and combining our financial support to help those who become ill is not only logical, but humane. Flag this | Edit this post |
