Your comparison is off - the Genesis was the early entrant in that war, with the SNES coming in late (possibly because Nintendo did not want to cut into their 8-bit games with the SNES). The Genesis also had a wider install base.

Input design is always a tricky problem. Some games are more suitable for certain input devices than others. Try playing a fighting game on a keyboard, for example.

Considering that the original version runs on essentially what is a 3ghz P4 with a 6800 and 1gb of ram (SEGA Lindbergh), I hope we'll see a PC port of this one day.
