| if it is actiblizzard's fault, here's the solution:
quit and form your own studio. you'd have more free press than you could ever need to roll into your first game. make it good, make it for PC, sell it on steam and make tons of dough.
if they're not doing that, or at least wanting to do something like that, IW is to blame. Flag this | Edit this post |

| so i heard that this is targeted at those that are older and/or visually impaired... it makes sense, especially considering the jumbo stylus.
also, i felt better after realizing that the resolution isn't changing, so the image will actually be a bit worse. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | as kuul mentioned, it's more similar to a hack-n-slash or even an MMO than a seriously deep RPG. not that FO3 is a seriously deep RPG, but yeah. borderlands has fewer, different RPG elements, but they're more cohesively integrated so that they don't get in the way of the shooting. | i've been trying out some new things with the structure of the article, what do you guys think? do you like the sections dedicated to controls, MP, or consolitis (if applicable)? previously they had been mixed in with the rest of the gameplay stuff.
by the way, the formatting is largely out of my hands. just sayin', 'cause i'd be tweaking it a bunch to make it look just right. ;) Flag this | Edit this post |

| | just looking at the specs listed here, you could tell that regular disk drives would be about the same or better in terms of writing speed. the real advantage is with the read speed, which is about 4 times higher. plus, this is an entry level SSD, you get what you pay for. | let's not forget that crysis is a couple years old now... it's yet to be seen what it looks or performs like, but i'm hoping that they've been working on the PC version ever since it came out for consoles a bit more than a year ago.
and frankly, i'm glad to see it needs that much disk space. it means there's really high-res textures and/or tons of voiceover data, etc. you can't seriously complain about 25GB when you can get a terabyte drive for under $100! with this and dragon age: origins also taking over 20 gigs, they're finally utilizing a major PC strength. | i didn't say people WILL equate higher price to higher quality, i said maybe they will, i.e. they might. just like people might be more likely to pirate if the price goes up.
you're implying that a PC gives you more headaches than a console and that it justifies getting the game at a lower price? correct me if i'm wrong, but it was YOU who chose the PC as a gaming platform. if you want an easier time getting the game to work, go for the console... but if you want better graphics, more customization, and, depending on the game, better controls and/or multiplayer, PC is where it's at. if you ask me, it's the consolers getting the shaft most of the time.
when the PC version of a game is a crappy port or is plagued with consolitis, don't buy it! when you purchase a game, you're effectively saying "yes, mr. publisher, this game is good, please make more like it." so let your money do the talking (or not, as the case may be).
i'm well aware of what valve has accomplished with their sale events, i may have even posted that same link on another news article here somewhere down the line, heh. i'm all for getting games on the cheap; heck, i bought titan quest + immortal throne when it was on sale for $10 last week, as well as assassin's creed for $5 yesterday. i'm just keeping an open mind, wondering if raising prices is perhaps crazy enough to work. | i was summarizing the article i read, which i found interesting because it's the opposite view that you and most other people have on the issue of game prices. it also cited some good reasons why the price should be the same as on consoles - mainly, when done right, the PC version is superior. how is it fair to get a better game for less money? take RE5 and batman for example, they're easily worth $60 each. if MW2 can deliver what they're promising, including a satisfying multiplayer experience despite the matchmaking BS, it will be worth that much, too.
i'm not a psychic, or even some kind of industry analyst, so your guess is as good as mine. the only fact i put out there was that video game prices have stayed the same even though they should have been steadily increasing with inflation...
regarding piracy: yes, it's a big reason why sales on PC are generally lower than on consoles. but how do you know a higher price will mean lower sales overall? maybe more people will decide to pirate it, but maybe more people will also equate higher price to higher quality and buy it when they otherwise wouldn't play it at all. who knows if any increase in piracy would outweigh the double-profit earned on legitimate purchases?
it's a bold experiment. maybe they'll sell way less and make no money. maybe they'll sell less but still make money. maybe they'll sell the same and make way more. maybe they'll sell a ton and make oodles of cash! who knows, but i think everyone, regardless of their opinion, is dying to find out. | i know we're accustomed to the way prices are now, but the standard console game at $60 is a LOT less than we used to pay. N64 games used to cost $70-80, then a bit less with competition from the PSone. and that was way back in the day, when the dollar was worth about 30% more!
i read an interesting article in PC gamer that pointed out how much game prices have actually DROPPED in the past 10 years by staying the same despite inflation. it also said that PC games going up to $60 could be a good thing, since the absence of a platform license fee would make PC games twice as profitable for publishers as console games.
so when modern warfare 2 comes out at $60 for all platforms, you can effectively count the PC sales figure two times in comparison to the console sales as far as earnings. if it does even half the numbers it does on xbox and PS3, it would be considered a HUGE success. you can bet we'd be seeing the $60 price tag on more big games coming out and companies would be more motivated to spend time and money making quality PC games.
cutting prices across the board would have the opposite effect, with less profitability leading to lower production budgets and even more tightening of corporate assholes when somebody comes up with a fresh new (i.e. risky) idea. asking for lower prices, for whatever reason, is just selfish and would ultimately be very, very bad for the games industry - less innovation, more milking cash cows and $5 horse armor. | it's fine if you want to streamline things for hurried or inexperienced players, but that's no excuse to make it the only way to play. they talk about independent servers with different rules and other customizations like they're all bad... it's just wrong to assume you know better than the many thousands of dedicated players and clans that host quality game servers. and the so-called "barrier to entry" is a bunch of poppycock; a game of this caliber would have 10000 open servers up on day one.
if you want to have a bunch of "official" servers, go ahead, just give us options. we're not babies, we know what we're doing and we know what we like. Flag this | Edit this post |

| here's a recent article that covers this topic pretty well; it says that 94% of households already have access to broadband... a lot of rural areas are left out of that, but there is satellite internet. aside from coverage, the US is severely lacking in speed and affordability. obviously places like japan or finland (as discussed in the article) have a lot less ground to cover, literally. but really it's the corporations like comcast and at&t not wanting to really invest in the infrastructure needed to deliver the kind of cheap and fast connections we would all love to have. the FCC has a ton of work to do in regulating these giants or else we'll continue to fall behind. | | it's not the greatest game ever, despite what some people will tell you, but it's pretty good. plus you can carry over your save data (and so your character and consequences of decisions made) into the sequel. you still have plenty of time before this comes out, it's only $20 now i think. | | the gameplay wouldn't change for single player, so what they really need to do is make the AI a lot better. so much time spent to make the zombie attacks more varied and challenging, i hope they didn't ignore the survivor bot intelligence... Flag this | Edit this post |
