| You're trying to play the game as an RPG, when it is clearly a FPS with some very lite RPG elements.
This game is a first person looter, first and foremost. It is not an RPG by any means.
There is a very thin story, but the main drive is to get better loot, exactly like Diablo 2. If you don't look forward to getting the next bigger, shinier weapon, this game will be boring for you.
The art is fantasic btw, it really stands out from the rest of the realistic FPS games out there. Crank the graphics way up, it looks really good. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Hey Jacob,
I think the way you broke out the sections and specifically mentioned consolitis problems very helpful for potential buyers. I would like to see more reviews have these general sections going forward, especially the consolitis section. Be sure to continue mentioning if the problem can be fixed by tweaking a config file, as you did in this article. That will be useful information for many. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Ehhh... I'd say it has less RPG elements than Fallout 3 had. There are no complex quests with moral decisions, or stats to mess around with. It's more FPS than RPG; the RPG elements are very very lite, but that's not a bad thing. Think Diablo 2 with guns and you'll have a really good idea of what to expect.
Borderlands has simple quests (just like Diablo 2), there is lots of loot management (just like Diablo 2), and the main focus is on running and gunning. Don't expect a complex RPG with this game, you'll be disappointed if you think it's like Fallout 3. It's similar, mainly due to the "wasteland" theme, but other than that, this is a First Person Looter and nothing more. Which I happen to love.

| I took this from other forums (saves me the time of explaining):
"Mouse smoothing came from the time of mechanical ball mice, because of their poor spacial resolution, i.e. if you move the mouse from left to right in FPS, you would see that the rotation of your view is performed in "jumps", which is an artifact of low resolution sampling of mouse position.
If you have good optical mouse, there is no need to smooth it at all."
And this:
"It makes it smooth to move the mouse but slowing the reaction because it's basically delaying the response. Not really good to use at games that requires lots of reflex and response."
Basically, it makes it feels like you're moving around in honey or some other liquid: movement is not as "snappy" as it should be with mouse smoothing on. Bioshock on PC had this problem, that game felt "laggy" when moving the mouse, until mousesmoothing is disabled. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » I agree wholeheartedly I have nothing more to add that could enhance this article. Everything Jacob mentions is spot on.
Definitely tweak your config files to remove mouse smoothing, the FOV thing, and make zoom a toggle option, it really enhances an already amazing game. There are a few other tweaks as well, but those are the major ones.
And while Single-player is fun, the most fun will be had playing with 4 real life friends. Make sure to turn off the "always on mic" through the config files so you can use Vent or Teamspeak without an echo from the ingame voice chat (which is always on unless you disable it as mentioned above).
Seriously, play this game with 4 friends, it makes everything harder (badasses are tough to take down in a 4 player game), and the loot that drops has a higher chance of being better than if you were playing alone.
Level 28 Zerker that specialized into melee damage. Last night I found a class mod that increases my melee by +72% plus adds +2 and +3 to a few other melee skills. I was punching things for 1k each hit, and critting for 4k-7k, as fast as I could click my mouse. And my character was laughing and screaming the whole time, so funny. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Ok, help me understand the Performance numbers...
I assume those numbers are Frames per Second, so higher is better, correct?
Which means, when GPU PhysX was OFF (for Medium and High settings, letting the CPU do the work), the frames dropped to the 1 FPS range, no matter which card was used? Am I reading that correctly? In other words, when the CPU was handling the physics, frames dropped to 1-2 FPS? Geez.
How about with PhysX completely off? I suppose the PhysX completely OFF numbers would be very similar to the first table: Low PhysX with GPU PhysX OFF.
So if you're after frames, ignoring physX is the way to go, even if you have a Sli setup for dedicated PhysX.
Huh... interesting. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Crysis was built for next gen's hardward, Crytek has said this over and over.
Also, remember when Farcry first came out? The systems back then were barely able to handle maxed out Farcry.
I bet by June of '08 there will be systems out there that will be able to run Crysis a hell of a lot better.
Also, you don't HAVE to max Crysis for it to look amazing. It scales really well and looks awesome on Meduim and High settings too. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Turbine (Devs of LotRO) also had a lot of previous experience with MMO's, starting with Asheron's Call (which is still going), AC2 (which they closed down after 2 or 3 years), and Dungeons & Dragons Online. I'm sure that experience helped LotRO lauch so smoothly. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Do any of you have female cousins or sisters in the 12-16 year old range? If so, notice what games they play... Sims.
I went home for Thanksgiving, and ALL of my little cousins were into the Sims games. Shoot, even some of my cousins in college were still playing Sims.
The Sims series is like a huge doll house for girls. I saw my little cousins spend 4-5 hours just designing just 1 house. It's like crack to them, lol. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | No matter how you cut it, the PARENTS are the ones responsible for monitoring what their children play. The ESRB should be used as GUIDELINES for parents to decide what they want their stupid kid to play. We don't need to waste time trying to pass dumbass laws (As this Senator did). Seriously, spend the time doing something worthwhile... sounds like this guy is finally using some logic. Good for him. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Yeah, awesome to not see friggin WoW on there, good god. That game has been in the top 10 for the past year or more it seems like.
Also, I liked Crysis way more than COD4. Give me the wide open levels of Crysis any day of the week over the linearity of COD4. But then again, I like the "sandbox" gameplay, and I hate the invisible triggers that make up linear games (bad guys keep pouring out of a building until you trip the invisible trigger). | | Hey SFtheWolf, Just gotta say that I agree with you about CoD4. It felt even more linear than CoD2 to me, and I HATE it when I can feel how linear a game is. CoD4... I'll pass. Maybe they'll mix it up with CoD5, but this time around, I'm not buying Cod4. If I want a scripted rail ride I'll go to 6 Flags and ride a few rollercoasters. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Can't wait to see how OrangeBox did... Portals, HL Ep2, and TF2 all in one package. Best value ever.
And why the F is WoW still on that list? Jesus, who is still buying WoW to play for the first time?? Those poor bastards. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I concur, TF2 is just pure 100% fun. I haven't looked forward to playing a game after work this much since the very early days of WoW. Once 3 or 4 rolls around, I find myself getting excited to be able to go back home, quickly eat some dinner and then play TF2.
Every map is great, and the combo's of classes make each game different. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Here's an article from Wired.com about how Bungie went about playtesting Halo 3... this article shows why Halo 3 is such a great game, and it has nothing to do with advertising, or hype, or mass hysteria.
Article:
Halo 3: How Microsoft Labs Invented a New Science of Play
http://www.wired.com/gaming/virtualworlds/magazine/15-09/ff_halo
Very interesting on how they went about fine tuning the game. This is the polish that can take a game company months and months to fine tune. Flag this | Edit this post |
