| It is indeed laughable watching these cases unfold sometimes but let's not forget that this is the reason companies patent there IP in the first place - to protect it. Also it would not make business sense to sue every single company producing similar technology. Just go after those that are raking in money left, right and center.
We can't blame Gibson for doing this, every patent holder is at it. That is why patent laws exist. Therefore the 'simple' solution is to change the associated laws, to be fair though most judges in cases like this are usually correct with their assessment. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Yeah, loooooong sounds about right but the hilarious thing is that for all the time I spend at FS I have only just looked at my profile page... lol
Anyway 6 months for a reply is pretty shocking and I apologise profusely. :) Flag this | Edit this post |

| It's not that bad, seriously people need to get over it. As far as branding goes, it does the job and it is clearly a highly versatile and highly memorable look.
It would have been slated regardless of it's design - this is the olympics after all... Flag this | Edit this post |

| » We're the idiots!? lol And the point of your statement is what exactly? Get a clue my friend 'cos you're a few short at the moment.
I couldn't care less if they sell on 'steam', don't you get it? Are you THAT dumb, seriously?
Valve decides to bundle the products into one retail pack, some products in said pack we already have and/or don't want. Valve then says if you want it separately (the second episode for the game I bought years ago - along with the first episode - AT RETAIL don't forget) then I have to buy it direct from them via steam or do without. I know which I will choose, along with many others.
Valve is 'extracting the urine' (as I said in my last post), until they stop, they will surely suffer the wrath of the fans.
As for 'idiots'. You really would have to be an idiot to be taken in by it. *rolleyes* Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Valve leaks more gas, charges consumers for the privilege Dear Valve,
Your strategy gets worse the more it emerges.
Are you extracting the urine or what? The ONLY reason most people are willing to buy the product is for EPISODE TWO, not the other 'price inflating' junk. (yeah they may be fun games in their own right, but who would PAY for two interactive technology demos? It doesn't end there, who would then pay for an ADDITIONAL copy of HL2 - AND - HL2: Episode One?)
Valve - as I've said many times in the past - you should sell these products all SEPARATELY and then you'll see what people really want. Instead you are adding content - that we don't want and/or already have - and charging us for it.
The Half Life 2 story ended with Episode One for me and but for many people it ended before.
Rethink what it is you're selling or kiss goodbye to many, many fans of the Half Life story.
Regards,
One disgruntled HL fan amongst many. Flag this | Edit this post |

| This is totally down to the system builders, it's they who are building machines barely capable of running the OS (and other software I might add) just so they can draw in the computer illiterate masses with low low prices.
And when they (the consumers) complain that their bargain basement machine doesn't run the software 'as expected' who do they complain to? Yep - the software developers.
It's a joke. Flag this | Edit this post |

| What a load of nonsense.
'Britain’s participation or perceived involvement in these injustices negates any moral authority Britain may have been able to claim at one time and precludes a response to the kidnappings, not that anyone pointing this out ever believed Britain or the U.S. possessed any moral authority to begin with.'
Comparing the 'morals' of Britain and Iran is hilarious. A nation that treats half of it's citizens as hugely superior to the other half is a disgrace. Women are barely treated better than animals in Iran. 'Iran' and 'morals' don't work in the same sentence.

Iran wants to push it's weight about because it knows it has a snowflakes chance in hell of getting the nukes it so badly wants. And yes my friend, you'd better start hoping that they don't for good reason... Flag this | Edit this post |

| By that mentality, then why should companies bother to optimise ANY of their code, any performance issues of today due to inefficient code will be taken care of by the processors of tomorrow... erm ok.
If there is room for improvement then it should be welcomed with open arms. Lower network bandwidth is a HUGE plus point, as is lower storage requirements. Also the cpu usage concern you talk of by decompressing an image is unfounded. Opening a hi res jpeg is by and large instantaneous, there is no reason to suspect that a smaller file of higher quality would take longer as this would also be using lossy compression (just implemented better).
Speaking of compression, keep in mind that jpeg uses lossy compression meaning that the filesize is reduced by literally removing data. In this format HD Photo would be the same as jpeg but will result in smaller size, higher quality and less artifacts. Cpu usage would only rise during lossless de/compression, which jpeg can't do.
Compression is a huge subject and one that is essential for every aspect of todays media, without compression we would not have high quality TV, radio, websites, communications, portable music, games would have little or no graphical or audio assets.. the list goes on and on.
Compression is here to stay and rightly so. Flag this | Edit this post |
