Wow... I have a launch day 360. Not a single flaw to it. I don't have to do anything special to keep it running. Either this guy has crappy luck or maybe he needs to have the wiring checked in his home.

It is so sad that it actually has to be stated that it will not play PS3 games remotely.

Have we degenerated so far that we actually have to be spoon fed things by the media that should be well within our capacity to deduce?

This is in no way a slight against the media... just against humanity.

They would have already sold that many if they had 35 million of them made. Get a clue Nintendo. Even Sony couldn't pull the under-produce to over-inflate demand stunt this time around.

While $179 sounds like a bit much for a 120GB hard drive, please remember that that's not a 3.5" drive in there as far as I can tell. It's probably closer to a laptop drive in size. Laptop drives have always been more expensive per gigabyte due to the smaller size of everything related.

What I want to know is how the Dolby Digital sound will be transmitted. My receiver doesn't support HDMI, and my TV doesn't have an output to carry the signal back to the receiver. So, I am really curious to see what options I would have. As much as I'd love to get an HDMI connection on my 360, I may have to settle for just a bigger hard drive.

As a MD resident, I can honestly say I'll be glad to see them gone. As for the durn fool idjit who was saying "Oh noes! This law would prevent us from having a Venus DeMilo sticker on our cars!" I have not once seen anyone with such a sticker on their car. I don't know anyone who would want one. I'm unaware of any such stickers being made. So WTF would anyone care? Smacktard.

First of all, wtf does Lucent have to do with MP3 technology? I thought the primary patent holders for MP3 were Thompson and Fraunhoeffer?

Besides, patents and patent suits are getting ridiculous. I just patented how to tie shoelaces. Now you all must pay me for the rights to tie your shoes. I also patented all known methods of getting untied shoelaces out of escalator tracks.

The Catholic Church and I haven't seen eye to eye in years. However, I think the headline here is a little misleading. He isn't attacking video games, he is attacking the trends toward unnecessary violence and sexuality in them. Whether he is justified in doing so or not is a subject for a different post. My point here is simply to correct a sensationalist headline.

I have to agree with Lord Orion. Yes, 71 percent of businesses could upgrade to Windows XP, however that needs to be taken with a grain of salt. XP was one of the most flexible OSes MS has made in regards to hardware requirements. It can easily run on very outdated hardware. The problem is two-fold. First, Microsoft designed Vista for the current mainstream PCs, which have evolved quite a way from what we had in the early 2000's. Older computers really can't compare. And secondly, the same companies that just scraped by with Windows XP (the vast majority, I'd guess) haven't upgraded their friggin computers since. If you barely met the requirements for XP, what fool would think your equipment would have what it takes to run the next generation OS?

I gotta tell you, I'm surprised the figure was as high as 50% for any version of Vista. Which to be honest, most businesses do not need 3d gaming, pretty desktops, or Media Center. Hell, the only MS apps I use at work are the office suite and IE. Everything else is all customised software built for our business needs.

While I agree on hating EA, I find it funny that such a loathsome company would be the one calling Sony out on missing a full 50% of their promised allocation of PS3's to the US.

Additionally, JCal, did you proofread this before you posted it? I mean... wow. You do great stuff normally, were you in a rush with this one? Maybe take a moment to read it out loud to yourself before clicking "submit"?

» It's a shame...
It's a shame they couldn't have stopped BF2142 from shipping... maybe it wouldn't have needed a day one patch.

Seriously, though, XFire doesn't own the friends list, but they do own the method by which the friends list is stored. If the Gamespy program extracts this information, then that could be an infringement. If it simply logs into XFire the same way Trillian logs into AIM and Yahoo, using it's own front end instead, then that's different.

» Improvement how? What does this show?
Looking at the graphs and reading the numbers, I'm not seeing much of an improvement between 8x and 16x. Statistically speaking, 3fps is hardly significant. From what I understand of how the aging AGP interface (which PCIe replaced) worked, this isn't really surprising. AGP shuttled data back and forth between the system's main memory and the graphics card's on-board memory. In the event that the frame buffer and texture memory exceeded the capacity of the on-board memory, the AGP interface allowed for texture data to be shuffled to system memory, sort of like a swapfile for graphics data. This was noticeable as stuttering and lag, particularly when entering a new area and a big ol' chunk of texture data was swapped out. Texture compression went a long way toward alleviating this issue, but then games started using bigger and bigger textures (ever looked at the raw textures in UnrealEd for UT2k4?) So, then the obvious fix was to further improve the interface and increase the memory on the graphics card. The 7900 GTX used in the article has a whopping 512MB of memory on board. Some computers are still shipping with only that much memory. Let's not forget that programmers are also continuously improving their code and solutions, especially those who have been working on a console, like the Xbox, whose memory limitations require more finesse in texturing. The result is that less swapping is taking place in-game and the end result for the user is a more seemless experience.

This, in essence, renders this entire article moot. It's like testing a car's ability to make toast.

So what would make for a more informative test? Well, since the texture data needs to be sent to the gfx card in the first place, how about a comparison of load times for the same save game file from a fresh start on 8x and 16x. Or test with a card that has less on-board memory. Or run the benchmarks at such ridiculous resolutions that the framebuffer squeezes most of the texture data onto system memory. Or perhaps a combination of those conditions.

I'm not saying that the results won't be similar. It's entirely possible that there is no perceptual difference between 8x and 16x (yet). But the test design that was used shows nothing of significant value due to confounding factors.

I just got my Samsung 21" widescreen LCD. There's an interesting option in NVIDA's control panel software that didn't show up until I connected the monitor with the DVI cable. It allows you to choose how the monitor handles lower resolutions. There is one option, under the advanced timing options, labeled as Flat Panel Scaling, if you choose Fixed Aspect Ratio Scaling, it will force 4:3 resolutions to be pillarboxed on your monitor and allow 16:9 resoltuions to be shown in their full glory.

Works beautifully for me. The problem is, the beta Vista drivers don't have this option.

The problem lies with two parties: the game makers for not including widescreen support in their games, and the graphics card makers for not making their beta drivers as feature-rich as their XP counterparts. Of course I don't really blame them as they are beta drivers for a beta OS. ;P The problem really has nothing to do with Vista, the OS was designed to work well with WS monitors and even includes 16:9 variants of some of the background images.

There is nothing I hate more than uninformed or under-informed journalists spewing nonsensical ramblings into the open and eagerly awaiting receiving orifices of the general public.
