| The part that I don't really understand is that all of these hard-partying people could have saved themselves LOTS of grief if they had only hired themselves a driver.
Paris, Lohan and all the others could party until they did a River Phoenix and we would never know. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I say do the story anyway, it's different enough that you couldn't consider it plagiarism. Someone once said that there are only 7 different story lines, everything else is a variation.
I once had a user call me about her computer not working. She left it on. It was actually only the crt dying, it must have shorted out (it was pretty old) because by the time I got to her office, there was wisps of smoke coming out of the rear top air vent. After I yanked the power cord, a little 1-inch flame melted the top of the crt. It looked like someone built a little bic lighter in it.
It would have been cute except for it being a fire hazard and all. Flag this | Edit this post |

| My 2 favorite headlines were: "AIDS is killing the world's vampires" and "Dog proves afterlife by talking to the dead", but they never explained who or how they talked to the dog to find out that it was talking to the dead.
The issue with the dog blew my mind when a few pages later, I read a true news item. It was a story about a janitor who hated his boss, so he poisoned the water-cooler. The boss didn't drink any water but a bunch of other people did. It was a local (to me) news story, and after seeing it faithfully reprinted in the WWN, I got stuck wondering how many other stories that I thought they made up, were actually true. | I played through extraction point in feb or march, and pics 2-5 are all taken from extraction point, not the new game.
For instance, the pics in the church... after you shoot the shades, alma walks in and sets fire to the chapel and chases you out its front and then through a window.
In pic 2, if you go down that ladder right behind the enemy, there is a health or reflex booster down there.
I remember these maps fondly. Good times. Flag this | Edit this post |

| oh it wouldn't be too difficult.
You wouldn't have to change the pizza delivery, taxi, cop or firetruck missions at all.
Instead of carjacking, you could have the guy say "excuse me while I borrow your car".
You could turn the basball bat into a bunch of flowers to give to the prostitutes, make the guns shoot paintballs...
yeah, i'm not convincing myself either. Flag this | Edit this post |

You are entitiled to your opinion, though I think Valve have held the source engine back to play well on so many crappy machines. If you look at the Valve hardware surveys, you'd be surprised at all the toy computers that people are using to play source engine games. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I'm not enough of a fan to have ever gone to outpost gallifry, but I don't think that movie/pilot was ever released here in the US. There is no listing on the IMDB which I have found to usually be very complete.
I agree that American humor is generally a lot less subtle though. But that's not always a bad thing.
I just caught an episode of "Touch Me Im Karen Taylor" and that show may as well be american Flag this | Edit this post |

| of course they could have spent more money on the shovel texture, it was free.
It seems like you missed the whole point to the article.
in pics 1-3, they used what was free with the source engine, since that's what modders start with.
in pics 4-6, they have REPLACED most of the assets with new created ones, because they are selling the game stand alone. Notice the difference in the zombies from pic 1 to 4, or the train from 3 to 6?
Pics 1-3 are no longer in the game. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Hmmm... flimsy is an odd choice of words. He is a private citizen and was under no compunction to participate, and had never said he would. He could say he didn't want to participate because his biorythms would be off that day, if he wanted. But he's a lawyer and has to talk like a lawyer.
Besides, with the history of animosity between them, JT would have to be stupid not to expect it to be like being invited on the Jerry Springer show.
PA has every right to disclose such information/milk it for all the publicity its worth. They asked JT to go, he said no. Not really news except its JT and they wanted some free publicity.
I dislike JT and am a fan of PA, but in this case call a spade a spade. Flag this | Edit this post |

| But why would he agree? His message was never to get people to stop playing games, but to legislate them out of existence. What would a debate at PAX accomplish for him?
Especially since there'd be no advertisement in advance. He's all about the press coverage, remember?
He'd get nothing out of it, preaching to an audience that specifically hated his message.
PAX on the other hand would benefit alot, as us gamers would be willing to go next year to see what the next surprise would be. Flag this | Edit this post |

| well the reason we have the law here is because little kids tend to point toy guns at jumpy cops. Hilarity NEVER ensues.
Of course, it is not illegal for you to repaint your toy gun if you are so inclined.
But the law is there to mainly protect the careers of jumpy cops.
It's up to you if you feel that infringes on your rights to own black and silver toy guns. Flag this | Edit this post |

| but that doesn't help your case any. If you are right about that, then its a layout flaw that makes the slot useless anyway, as I am sure that that slot can be used on other motherboards.
I would think that the amount of people dropping $350+ on a mobo would also be spending $100+ for discrete sound (though luckily for them Vista makes a case against this.), and then you have 2 slots used up plus 1 or 2 more for video at the least.
Also if you want to use SLI then you have NO PCIe x1 slots having to lose the other to cooling. Flag this | Edit this post |

| "The Striker and all of ASUS’s 680i boards come with a separate Supreme FX sound card. This isn’t a bad idea because you can choose not to use it if you have a better audio card."
As the owner of a Striker Extreme, I disagree. The slot for the card is non-standard, so if you have your own sound card (which i expect most gamers do) the slot is wasted, along with the slots that get wasted for 2 slot video cards. For instance if you ever use the 3 slot SLI/physics setup, the only leftover free slot is the propitary souncard slot. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Well my QX6700 is no longer King of the Hill, but I don't feel too bad since they didn't lower the price. I had a hard time justifying getting it (except it was the only quad option at the time, and quad was the way to go for a gaming machine).
Unless price is no object and you HAVE to have the fastest, a $1200 cpu is getting excessive. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Especially in FPS games, I've never understood the desire to cheat. You don't actually "get" anything. At least in WoW you get to keep loot and levels.
I have a friend who was very good at TFC and was actually in a league. He could easily beat 90% of the people on any pub server. He put in his time and had real skills, and yet he got kicked out of the league for having hacks.
I am his tech support, and sure enough he DID have them installed. When I asked him why, he claimed some lame thing about using them on pubs where he knew people were cheating.
He really did have the skills though, I've watched him play over his shoulder on my machine.
The only thing that I've been able to come up with is that he was always a morally weak person to begin with. Flag this | Edit this post |

| It's not so much the lack of drivers, as the lack of a good game-oriented API. DirectX is what made the M$ platform so viable, not Catalyst/ForceWare.
The minute that some open source project develops a clean-room version of dx10, i'd switch in a heart beat. Heck, i'd even break out the ancient coding skills and help. Because dx10 is what is truly locking me in to M$.
But the problem is M$, I think knows that (hence the games orientation of Vista). And any dev work to clone dx10 (or dx9)would be met with the biggest horde of lawyers wielding the DMCA, you've ever seen outside of a LOTR movie.
Extremetech has an editorial on why gaming on linux sucks and will always suck, worth a read. I can't say that I disagree with the writer's opinions. Flag this | Edit this post |

| "I was wondering why they released both a 32-bit and 64-bit version."
Well the future is 64bit, so I'm glad they did. But they currently HAVE to release 32bit because some 32bit apps won't run on 64 and haven't been rewritten yet. I'm sure M$ would like to drop 32 if they could.
"the WindowsXP64-bit version never really had any support for it (game wise, i guess)."
Yeah, that's why to get a Game For Windows logo your game has to support 64bit. M$ is going to do a serious push to get out to 64bit.
"My main question was why should I buy the 64-bit version of Vista rather then the 32-bit version."
M$ would say get it for patch-guard. As a CISSP, I agree in theory, until we see how much extra security it really adds. M$ tends to leave some pretty big security holes.
I say as an enthusiast you want 64bit for 2 reasons. #1 As their 64bit code matures, apps that modify big chunks of data (divx encoding, winrar, games of the future) will get faster than 32bit. More importantly, #2 64bit apps can use more than 2GB of memory each. If you have a 32bit OS and 4GB of RAM Crysis will not be able to use more than 2GB. There is already a 64bit addon for FarCry that adds among other things bigger textures.
Personally I think it all boils down to "what is the M$ tax for switching 32 to 64bit in vista?" and "what apps do you use that will not run in 64bit?"
In XP it was free to switch, but although M$ provides lots of info on upgrading between basic/home/business/ultimate I haven't seen anything about switching between 32/64.
I'm currently running XP-32, but the brand new machine that I'm building is such a monster that the few % difference that I will lose with Vista-64, I won't even see, and I don't have to figure out if there are any additional fees for switching to 64 later, so I'm going to try Vista64 on it. | Apparently you missed the part where kring says "basically all the eye candy turned on and overridden including vsync on."
Vsync being turned on is the reason he says "they are locked at 60 fps."
Check the weblink I provided for a very good article which will teach you about this important setting.
To help you quickly though, here's the important part "With VSYNC enabled, frame rates will not exceed the monitor's current refresh rate for that particular resolution. For example, if your monitor is using a refresh rate of 85Hz at 800x600, with VSYNC enabled, you will theoretically never exceed 85fps. So the refresh rate creates an artificial barrier that limits the frame rate."
Apparently you didn't read the FS article you are so quick to comment on because it shows that they get much better frame rates than 60fps.
If the frame rates were to suck like you are proposing, how did the companies program Crysis, UT3, or Mass Effect in DX10 WITHOUT using Vista? Link: http://www.d-silence.com/feature.php?id=255 Flag this | Edit this post |

| I have to admit that m$ is doing a good thing here for once.
Since I was going to get ultimate anyway, the 2 extra legal s/n for $100 for my other machines will be pretty sweet to keep things nice and legal, if the deal is true.
Microsoft now redirects http://www.windowsvista.com/familyoffer to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/ and searching the site gives no mention of the deal Flag this | Edit this post |
