| » Can't believe people like this game... Run at light speed, die in 2 seconds, the aiming feels very, very awkward (I agree with everyone else, its like the animations themselves aren't smooth), it also feels like the physical characters have no weight or inertia to them, people move and stop on a dime, spin, as though gravity doesn't affect them, etc, etc.
In a world of GRAWS and Vegas's and Battlefield 2's, this game just feels all sorts of wrong in the way it plays. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Give me a break What the hell is he talking about, his videogame systems were what trained an entire generation to get comfortable with sitting on their beds or in their living rooms with an arcade stick in their hands staring at the screen for 10 hours at a clip. What a fucking hypocrite.
When I was 12 I could go into an arcade with 4 dollars in quarters and make it last 2 hours playing games that, on average, amused me for about 3-6 minutes per play.
Do you think I want to be playing freakin Berzerk 30 years later? Shit no, I've grown up. I want GTA4, I want Halo, I want Soldier of Fortune. I Do not want to be playing The Sims, I do not want to be playing Monopoly.
The best part about comments like this from old schoolers whos relevance is no longer an issue today is that they never offer the solution. They tell you whats crap, but they'll never tell you their idea for what "isn't" crap, because if they did, they'd be laughed out of the hall of fame.
Shut up Nolan, you had your time and the world you helped build has moved on without you. When you're 40 you don't want to watch Disney movies like you did when you were 10, and Video Games are in the same evolutionary state. Flag this | Edit this post |

| The problem today is what constitutes cheating?
I mean, back in the day players chewed tobacco for the rush of energy the nicotine gave them...did that give them an advantage over the ones who chewed bubble gum?
Was it cheating? Or just cheating a LITTLE..?? Is there such a thing??
Is a high potency vitamin cocktail the same as a steroid? Answer..."maybe"...depends how it affects the individual performance. As soon as you say "this is ok, but this isnt'" people begin to look for ways around the "isn't" part....and you get these "well was he doping or wasn't he?".
See: Tour De France...
I think in the years to come, everyone is going to be on some sort of enhancing substance...and pretty soon, everyone will be on all the most potent ones. People will set outrageous records...and these people will also probably be dead by the time they are 40. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Well, remember: Digital TV is *NOT* HDTV. HD signals are just one aspect of Digital TV adoption.
And the $199 players are one advantage that HD will have this year, but the other one is that the HDDVD standard allows for Flipper discs: DVD on one side, HD on another. If they drop the price to $19.99 and make ALL movie releases flippers....ie: no more "just dvd" version, but all of them HDDVD/DVD versions...well, thats going to mean a big difference in adoption rates. I think the article here mentions that.
But I still think no matter what...people wont rebuild their DVD collections....I'll buy the pretty sci-fi and high special FX movies in HD where the extra detail pays off. But a movie like, say, 40 Year Old Virgin? Nahhh. Flag this | Edit this post |

What you download, you cannot re-sell. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » The War is already lost :) So long as DVD's continue to exist, nobody is really going to pony up another $25 or $30+ dollars to get a "HD" version of a movie they probably just bought (maybe for the second time if it was a double-dip title) on DVD just a handfull of years before.
The only reason DVD's took off was they STOPPED PRODUCING VHS tapes with new release movies, and the cost of the players dropped to nothing.
Do you think your parents know the difference between a DVD and a HD broadcast? And more importantly, even if they do notice the difference....DO THEY CARE ENOUGH TO UPGRADE NOT ONLY THEIR EQUIPMENT *BUT ALSO THEIR MOVIE LIBRARY*? Answer: Shit no.
Welcome to Laserdisc part 2.
Those of us that care already own both, so there is no war. Or rather there is war to be fought, but nothing to be won, until DVD's go the way of the dinosaur and everyone is forced to upgrade again.
VHS lasted 25+ years. DVD is just about to turn 10 and its replacements are already on the shelves....but much like SACD's and DVD-A....will anyone REALLY care? Flag this | Edit this post |

Or give off enough carbon monoxide to kill a city block? :D
HDDVD said "we can do it cheaper, and here's your incentives to try it". Seriously, people arguing back and forth..the formats are basically IDENTICAL with IDENTICAL output thanks to shared compression standards, its going to wind up being whoevers cheapest and most profitable. | My guess is this: Ultimately it probably comes down to the fact that Movie Studios are afraid to pull all their eggs in a Sony basket. Sony owns movie studios.
Toshiba does not.
Whos to say that Sony's own movies wouldn't get "preferential treatment" somehow either in the manufacturing queue or what, whos to say the price of manufacturing HDDVD's just got a whole lot cheaper than BluRay?.....whos to say Sony hasn't been dicking around somehow with the studios?
And of course cash incentives don't hurt :)
Still.........the way the BD fanboys are reeling in horror is funny....many are using the guise "Its about the format war!"...but bet your ass if HDDVD won the format war, they'd organize some kind of boycott.....
BD just took a beatin. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Willow FTW Kids, Sony Betamax was a superior tape format to JVC both in size and resolution.....it failed.
JVC won the "hearts and minds" and got prices down quicker.
A HDDVD player at $149 or $199 surrounded by a big wall full of HDDVD Titles will move a ton of units to Joe6pack.
If Sony wants to counter, they need to get their BD discs down to $14.99 each.
I own both, and prefer neither. Flag this | Edit this post |

Meanwhile the games are still 720p, have no scaling (or terrible scaling ala R6V), run at barely 30fps in many cases, and come out at the rate of 1 game per quarter.

Ebert was sometimes just a pontificating ass, but Gene was the level-headed one.
In other words, he was the likable one to Ebert's film-snob ways.
Battlefield Earth may be terrible in many ways, but it really wasn't the worst Sci-Fi movie I'd seen. Sure, it was laughably bad in many areas, but having a bajillion dollar budget saved parts of it....theres far worse direct-to-video crud out there than BF Earth. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Jack Tretton.....retard. Sony can't afford to buy exclusivity, and emerging developers wont consider it unless its for the leading console for fear of alienating the manufactuer with the most deployed systems, which Sony isn't anymore.
Developers exist for one reason: To make games that make money. No sense in devoting years of your life to a game to sell on a system that would limit your sales to perhaps as much as 50 or 75%.......hence exclusivitiy is going to come from developers being either fanboys or being bought-out or paid to make sure that limiting their software sales doesn't hurt them too much financially.
Sony seems to have little experience being behind the 8ball.....Microsoft appears to have learned from their #2 slot with Xbox. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » They aren't failing, theyre duking it out HDDVD isn't dying, Blu Ray isn't dying...HDDVD has enough exclusives to keep people interested, BD has enough studios interested to keep cranking out movies. Neither format is doing particularly well becuase its for enthusiasts only, period. I have about 15 HDDVDS and 2 BD's.
Neither will be mainstream until they start to either delay the release of DVD versions and put the HD discs out a month or two sooner (So the impatient will buy them), or they drop the price of the HD discs to DVD levels.
I buy more HDDVD's because they can be cheaper than their HDDVD counterparts. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » A very good ending But only a so-so episode. Too much time wasted on the whiney mommas-boy Anthony Jr., who accounted for I think 15-20 minutes of the episode :P
Is it life goes on for the Sopranos, ending a the season with a meal and having to deal with impending inditements?
Or was the quick cut to black and silence Tony getting whacked by that guy who went to the bathroom while he was distracted by Meadow coming in through the front door?
You can argue this till the cows come home.
Which is probably exactly what Chase wanted.
But I agree...Sopranos pretty much jumped the shark after Season 4. The past 2 seasons were really, really weak...they felt like they were written by a guy who didn't want to write them, sot hey were kinda bleak and depressing.
What made the first four seasons so great was there was so much humor, and the great dynamic between Tonys two "famiies". The last few seasons its moe like "Depressed people waiting to die" :P Link: http://... Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Why What they dont tell you is that while you have dreams of playing Doom 3 or BF2 on your airplane ride to visit Grandma, after about 5 minutes of playing with the laptop keyboard and travel mouse, you'll give up in disgust. So scratch airplane rides (assuming you could plug into an A/C outlet).
So then you say you'll game in the hotel room. But...you wont, unless you have a full sized keyboard and mouse AND a decent enough desk to sit at in your room.
Back in the day my old job gave me a PC that could play Wolfenstein, Quake 3, etc at a perfectly good clip. I used it once, then never again, mostly for the reasons above. Flag this | Edit this post |

This was a fantastic show, really well done, a great revamping of the '79 show (tho I love that one for all time)...I haven't seen any of season 3, but the first two seaons are some fantastic storytelling.
But I agree....a dog-turd like Stargate goes 10 years and this disappers in 4...I guess its true what they say, quality over quantity. Plus, Stargate was basically Richard Dean Anderson running around in the woods with a P90 every week, that can't cost much to produce :P Flag this | Edit this post |

| There was no mention of videogames in the reports out so far, only that the guy downloaded alot of music.
BLAME THE RIAA!!! He was probably about to be sued!!!
PS: There is one thing, however, with videogames..and this *IS* true. Movies, TV shows, Music..all glorify violence.
Well, really, they glorify everything forbidden, its not just violence.
However videogames *ARE* interactive....they are not a passive experience, its you doing the whatever.....murderin....carjackin....mushroom and turtle-squishin...
So there is that one difference that videogames desensitize more than just videos and audio streamed into our heads, videogames are the next level.
Having said that...this guy was an adult....if his parents let him play doom when he was 10, and they blame the game, throw his parents ass in jail...not "ban the game".
The 50 bajillion people who dont commit homicide after playing FPS's probably have presidence over the handfull of nut-jobs just looking for a trigger or excuse to go on a rampage. If it wasn't a videogame, it would be getting fired from Pizza Hut a week later, or having some dude be rude to you while you're waiting for your McBurger to arrive... Flag this | Edit this post |

I'm just getting tired of GTA being a game that can't decide what it wants to be...does it make itself tongue-in-cheek like Vice City and make it violence with over-the-top humor, or does it try to play it serious and "gritty" like GTAIII which, personally, I didn't care for.
