| You can't put a price on console reliability and reduced actual cost of ownership over the lifetime of the console. Plus, you get BD capability with the PS3. All great reasons to get a PS3.
If people want a 360 that's fine, but I love my PS3 all that it does for me. For a HT junkie, the PS3 is a very good fit. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Wait... the PS3 which does all the high-res codecs (DTS-HD MA and TrueHD) is inferior to what Samsung? The Only Samsung that does even remotely similar speed/loading times are the P3600 and the P4600, both of which are either the same cost (P3600) as a PS3 or more expensive (P4600). The PS3 is still used as the reference Blu-ray player in CNet's testing labs, as well.
The PS3 may no longer be the "de facto" BD player, but it's still in the top 3. Obviously, if you want a quiet player, you should go with one of the Samsungs, but we all know the issues Samsung has had with their firmwares and DRM on many of Fox's discs. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I don't see what the big deal is. People are less likely to give Apple a hard time for selling a new copy of their OS every single year whereas Microsoft sells a new copy every 3 or so years. The cost is about the same (if not less for the Microsoft route). Flag this | Edit this post |

| This memo is confirmed at Best Buy (I work there). Computers with Vista Home Premium or higher will get the equivalent SKU of Windows 7 with a new computer purchase beginning June 26th.
The program will involved mailing proof of purchase and some shipping charges, but other than that the program is free. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Wow. Hate on the PS3 much? A BD player that has games? So that makes the 360 a DVD player that has games, too? I'd much rather have a BD player that plays games (particularly since it's only $100 more than the DVD player and it comes with Wifi built in). Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Even if the collective sales are 50% of third party sales on Wii, the sheer quantity of titles is the reason for it. When third party title exclusives that should have sold more than a paltry 25,000 copies (Madworld, No More Heroes, etc.), it's no wonder that developers don't put more than an after thought into adding more dollars towards making quality Wii titles. If there are 750 Wii titles (700 of which are 3rd party) and the 360 and PS3 have 250 titles (225 of which are 3rd party), yeah, I could see why Wii might sell more total copies. But per title, the sales are so small (even if the collective is large), there is little reason to add tons of money towards developing those titles. Flag this | Edit this post |

| No. They are not. I'm going to read off the list of year-to-date rankings for titles, and you'll see 3rd party games on 360/PS3 sell in FAR greater numbers than any Wii 3rd party title (the first of which appears at #15).
1.) Wii Sports
2.) Wii Fit
3.) Wii Play
4.) Pokemon Platinum
5.) Mario Kart Wii
6.) Resident Evil 5 (360)
7.) Call of Duty Wold at War (360)
8.) New Super Mario Bros
9.) Halo Wars
10.) Resident Evil 5 (PS3)
11.) Killzone 2
12.) Mario Kart DS
13.) Left 4 Dead (360)
14.) Street Fighter 4 (360)
15.) Guitar Hero World Tour (Wii)
16.) Street Fighter 4 (PS3)
17.) Halo 3
18.) Nintendogs
19.) Skate 2 (360)
20.) Lego Star Wars (Wii)
The two top selling Wii 3rd party games have something in common: casual audience. Only 6 other 3rd party Wii games make the top 50 year to date. Three of them are fitness games (Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum, EA Active, and My Fitness Coach), Rock Band 2, and Shaun White.
Call of Duty World at War:
360: 5.53m
PS3: 3.28m
Wii: 1.15
Total 3 party games in Top 50 sales
Wii: 8 out of 15
360: 13 out of 16
PS3: 3 out of 5
It's pretty telling numbers right there. Core games such as CoD:WW matter on the other two platforms. Only casual games have any audience on the Wii. It makes sense that core developers neglect the Wii when developing across all platforms--their games don't sell on the Wii nearly as well as on PS3 or 360. If you have a casual game, that's a whole other matter. They need to focus on the Wii the most. Flag this | Edit this post |

| It doesn't matter if the games are watered down or not. Wii owners are either 1.) Nintendo fan boys or 2.) Parents buying consoles for the family as a novelty. Neither demographic gives a crap about 3rd party games. Both demographics want what they know, and that is Nintendo games: Mario, Metroid, Zelda.
You can make great 3rd party games for the Wii (or DS for that matter), but they don't sell because the demographic doesn't care. They want more Mario, more Metroid, and more Zelda. And frankly, that's all that Nintendo really cares about either. If they cared about 3rd parties, there would be more multi-million sellers on the Wii because Nintendo would be advertising and bombarding the news with those products. | It's remarkable how you couldn't find any retailers that still had Wiis or DSs in stock. Unfortunately, you couldn't say the same thing for Sony or Microsoft's consoles.
It really comes to show you how casual gaming is sort of the future of the gaming world... :-( Flag this | Edit this post |

| I work at Best Buy and here's what I've observed.
1.) Blu-ray sells just fine. Plenty of folks come in looking for players and discs. New releases sell very well on Blu-ray. Catalog releases are hit or miss.
2.) PS3 doesn't sell. 360 sells a minuscule amount. Everyone wants a Wii and we can't keep them in stock.
3.) Nobody buys the 360 Arcade. Nobody buys the 360 Elite. Everyone buys the 360 Pro.
4.) 360 software outsells PS3 software 2-1. Wii Rock Band/Guitar Hero outsell the 360/PS3 equivalent 4-2-1.
5.) People want the Wii, Wii Fit, and Mario Kart Wii. I get the occassional question about Call of Duty. Nobody cares about anything else.
This is my observations from Best Buy since the holiday season. I have no idea what online purchasing habits are like. Flag this | Edit this post |

| This game is seriously cool. Got it on the PS3 and it's really a unique experience. There are parts which are frustrating (stupid jumping puzzles), but it's really unlike anything else out there.
The animations look better than the PS3 version. Flag this | Edit this post |

| The problem is HDTVs. HDTVs are a premium product. There is no point in buying a BD products if you don't own a HDTV. There's something like 30 million HDTVs in America (I think that's what I last heard), of those, something like 30% even own HD-capable cable or satellite. If about a 1/3 of people with HDTVs don't even subscribe to a basic HD service, how many of those folks can we expect to know about BD?
Hell, my parents thought they could just buy BDs and stick them in their regular DVD player, just not get the benefit of HD until they bought a BD player. It's misconceptions like this that will take a long time to get over. Heck, one of my friends' parents just realized that there's a TV guide built into satellite and digital cable. In 10 years, when the current 20-30 somethings comprise the vast majority of the TV buying market, I think that's when everyone will have a far better understanding of all things HD. | HDTV = premium product
BD = premium product
It's no wonder that HDTVs cost more than SDTVS and BDs cost more than standard DVDs. They will continue to cost more than DVDs because the encoding and authoring processes are more expensive and time consuming.
Don't forget, Sony itself is also something of a premium brand. Cheap players are on the way, however. You can pick up a Sylvania BD player at Costco for $200, a Samsung for $230, and a Sony for $270. Those prices are almost $150+ cheaper than a year ago. I imagine by next year, they'll drop to ~$150 for premium brands and ~$100 for cheaper brands. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Any true video/audiophile knows that BD offers far superior quality to any streaming media today. Of course, "good enough" DVD is sufficient for most people, unfortunately. Why do people even bother with HDTVs? I just don't understand why you wouldn't want to maximize the potential of your TV. Flag this | Edit this post |
