| Bought it, tried it, cancelled it.
I really wanted to like this game, but the instanced nature of the game really annoys me. The world seems so very small and even though some of the zones are rather large, it doesn't "feel" like an open world at all. Loading times were terrible, even on a very current machine. I like the more active real-time combat, but the combo gimmick got old quick.
Oh well, I have an account and I'll check back in 6 months. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Well, I obviously can't speak for anyone else's experience, but here's my two cents. I managed to get an OEM copy of Vista fairly inexpensively and decided to run a dual boot 32bit XP Pro and 64bit Vista Ultimate. I've been operating this way for about 9 months now, and all I use is XP. My hardware isn't absolutely top-notch (C2D, 4GB RAM, 8800 Us in SLI), but the performance vs reward ratio swings heavily for me in favor of XP. Not to mention, I actually had to remove my X-Fi sound card a few months ago because when I DID use Vista it was very unpleasant. I still maintain the dual boot setup, because I want to be able to give a fair shake to improvements in Vista, but all told, there haven't been any (incl SP1) that have made the experience "easier or more enjoyable." Just my experience for the record.
Lastly, I've worked in corporate IT, and there is no way in hell any company would willingly spend the kind of money needed for an OS rollout when their current situation works fine, or better, than the proposed "upgrade." Besides, a lot of the smaller companies that I dealt with simply needed a machine to write reports, do accounting, and check email. Personally, I don't see Vista being any more capable of these "mundane" tasks than XP, or Win2K for that matter. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Hey, I donated the $25 and entered. I mean, $25 is a small price to pay for helping little, future Ugandan geeks. And the chance to win some sweet hardware...? What's not to like? Merry Christmas fuckers. ;-) I love you all. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Well, I actually bought this game on a whim today just to give it a fair shake. Tried to get online and subscribe and found out that you can't. The subscription server was down. So, I figured I'd wait and just check out the game instead. Went in, created a character, got to level 3 and the servers went down. Hmmm... Servers are still down over an hour later, and the website is nothing but 404's. Fantastic support. :-| Why do I keep making these mistakes on overly hyped games? I'm retarded, and someone please shoot me. I wouldn't reccomend buying this game for at least 2 or 3 months. Teh suckage. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Yeah, the lack of VSync really bothered me as well.
I just got done beating the hell out of my system with this game and I have to admit, I am a little surprised. Not necessarily disappointed or conversely, pleased,... but rather, just surprised.
It REALLY is just an updated Far Cry. I mean, even the level design gave me an incredible sense of deja vu, and that was before I factored in the identical tropical island setting. I liked Far Cry though, so that's neither really good or bad.
Of course, I was most interested in seeing how the game looked, and again, the results were kind of a mixed bag for me. My system specs:
C2D 6750 @ 2.92 GHz
Gigabyte P35-DS3R Rev 2
4 GB PC6400
EVGA 8800 Ultra KO
Creative X-Fi (crap ass, overpriced, underperforming sound card)
Samsung 20.1" LCD native 1600x1200
Dual-boot Vista Ultimate 64 and XP PRO SP2
Beta nVidia driver for Vista
OK, so in Vista, once I was able to actually get INTO the game past the first several black screens and program hangs (took a reboot btw), the game first autodetected the graphics settings all on "Very High." And this is all using DirectX 10 as well. I thought, "Sweet, my hardware expense actually paid off this year." Then I got into the game. Using Far Cry's old "R_Displayinfo 1" in the command line, I watched as the demo averaged 15-20 fps. Why would the game autodetect me at such shitty framerates?
So, I decide to see if it's the same story on XP with DirectX 9. So I boot up XP and install the demo. This time, the game autodetected all the settings to "high." Curious, I went into the menu and found "Very High" to be inaccessable. I am assuming it's not available to users without DX 10 (ergo Vista). The demo really ran a lot better at 16x12 in DX 9 with all settings on high. I was averaging around 45 fps.
Here's the kicker though... After playing it in DX10 first, and THEN going to DX9 on XP, I have to say, the reason that I'm simply surprised instead of amazed (like I should be) is because in my humble opinion, the game looks like shit on Very High. I mean, don't get me wrong, standing still, taking screen shots, it looks great. But when you move the combination of the motion blur and the post processing effects REALLY annoyed me. And I could find nowhere in the options where I could individually remove specifically the motion blur. That "feature" of DX10 is really an inhibiting factor for me.
It's somwhat difficult to pin down. I think the game is pretty great looking. The textures are incredibly detailed. The physics are pretty realistic. The water and fire effects are amazing. The enemies are all apparantly made of adamantite in normal mode. Weapon lag still sucks in every game. Direct X 10 and Vista are looking more and more like they decided to put a Yugo engine under the hood of a '07 Corvette and offer it to us all shiny and new. Then we drive it and we're like, "Why do I miss my '97 Buick?" Motion blur = motion sickness. It's not a feature. Developers should realize this and quickly.
Eh, maybe I'm too hard on it, but Crysis is kind of a mixed bag for me. I wanted it to be more, but I'm not really terribly disappointed with it either. I'm just surprised that Crytek put so much effort and hype into something so mediocre.
Lastly... play Bioshock. Now. Yes, Right now.
It's available on Steam. Pay for it now, download it while you eat lunch, and play it...
Now.
It's what gaming should be. Flag this | Edit this post |

Please check the religious diatribes at the door. Stop looking for reasons why we are here, and start exploring where "here" is. The idea of "God" is the pitfall that intelligent people have been either leaping or succumbing to for much of recorded history.
I personally found the video to be an outstanding primer for one of the many possible explanations of... everything, I guess. Once you unburdon yourself from the belief that we, as humans, are chosen and must be "saved" to reach enlightenment, the possibilities are infinite. However, I realize that trying to explain this concept to a "believer" is tantamount to convincing me that the face of Jesus appeared on a grilled cheese sandwich.
*sigh* Whatever helps you get through the day man. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Well, I've been a pretty loyal fan of the Battlefield series all along, but this latest release is just unacceptable. Yes, I know I'm a fucktard for even purchasing the game, especially since Battlefield 2 has been out something like 17 months and it STILL has problems they have not resolved. The future of the Battlefield series is going to hell. 2142 is so damn buggy it's nearly unplayable. But EA really doesn't seem to give a shit, and I'm sure patches for it will be a long way off. Not to mention they'll probably just drop support for BF2 and leave most of the remaining issues in that game unresolved. It really burns me up when publishers et al. bitch about people pirating their games and cutting into their bottom line, then they release this buggy crap which is really nothing more than a BF2 mod, and suckers like me, who always actually PAY for the game are left holding a steaming pile of shit. Not that I would, but it makes me seriously consider the possibility of piracy. If only so that, since I'm going to have problems playing a game anyway if it's pirated, I may as well not have paid so much for the headache. On the upside, in the hour or so that the game has actually worked properly, it IS a lot of fun. Purchase at your own risk. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Actually, I think it's a stand alone follow-up to the game "Soldiers: Heroes of World War II" that was released in early '05 I think. I actually dug "Soldiers," so I thought I'd check this game out. Ummm... all I can say is this sucks balls! Big hairy balls. The online downloading service buttfucks you harder than a cross-dressing Ron Jeremy on speed. So far I'm pulling the 940MB file down at a blazing 0.2kBs. Yes, that's right,... Even though I have a 6MBs cable connection, the "GamersGate" bullshit portal is making short work of my bandwidth. Very SHORT work. Alas... I don't trust the installer software, the company that's providing the download, or for that matter President Bush. Stay away from this crap until it can be purchased relatively easier. | Personally, I thought the article was pretty investigative and informative for a dedicated game site. I mean this isn't the AP blowing the lid off some secret CIA prison scandal. The author had quite a few good, relative comments from people connected to the industry that have experience in the field. From game designers to the "money-men" that raised both good and bad points with the PS3.
For the guy that said the article is biased towards MS, I say provide us with a little news you consider to be positive regarding Sony's latest announcements. This is a forum after all. People either provide opinions or links to other people's opinions/facts. In the words of a nutcase actor, "Show me the money." Don't just ask to be spoon-fed someone else's positive spin.
I really couldn't care what Sony does because, regardless of their choices I'm not dropping $600 to play console games. I already have a killer PC rig, so there is no point for me. UNLESS... and this is pretty much true for ANY gaming system (PC, XBOX, PS3, Wii), there are some really killer games that come out for said platform. I'm a gamer first and a brand loyalist second. I think that too many people base their opinions on brand loyalty and pass over the selection of real, solid, bug-free, *FUN* games.
Just my two cents, but I couldn't give a shit about processing speed, optical format, resolution, or any other marketing ploy unless there are genuinely good games to be played. Where's the focus on what game consoles are really for? Games. Flag this | Edit this post |
