| I wonder if the Geico caveman can do it?
.....
Not a good example of how to hold a videocard by that monkey. He should be fired.
And it's that easy if everything goes right. But that doesn't always happen.
And remember people couldn't program the clock on their VCRs back in the day. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Wii graphics haven't been showing their age.
The problem is the year+ before WiiSports Resort, Nintendo released a bunch of crap that proved fairly unpopular.
WiiMusic and Animal Crossing last fall along with WiiSpeak and early this Spring I recall ExciteBots and PUnchout.
WiiMusic wasn't widely liked. AC was the same game. ExciteBots was fun, but not marketed and had a fairly low budget. Punchout was a great remake of the old game, but a $20 game (or $15 WiiWare game) not a $50 one.
That was the problem. That and not dropping the price until recently.
Now though I've bought WiiSports Resort, WiiFit PLus because I saw it for $14 new which can't be beat even if you only play the mini-games for a week and in a few week Super Mario Bros. Those are all fun games. No great graphics required. And all will be big hits.
So in the games business things don't work in a straight line. IT's an entertainment business. You have some hits and misses and your hits have to keep you going through the misses. And none of this occurs in time with the monthly calendar.
The only thing Nintendo should do is spend a little more money and put out 2 more games a year.
Miyamoto said he wishes more folks would play StarFox. Well if you put your AAA team on the game and put some marketing behind it to make it "kool" to play the game then maybe people will.
But Nintendo's reaction is to put spend less and less money on the game. To market it less. And put crappier and crappier teams on it even farming out the name last gen to another studio and they wonder why less folks play it.
Wake up. Hell team him up with Mario and you'll sell your extra 2 million copies if that's what you need.
I digress. Anyway I don't think Wii needs HD. The only reason they'd make a WiiHD is for the folks that want their box to say "HD." A WiiHD would only upconvert anyway.
Nintendo just needs to keep the good games a coming. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I don't see how cheating will be any better. Plenty of wallhackers & exploiters on the 360.
ON a dedicated server with admins, cheaters are gone in 2 seconds.
Also dedicated servers provide a meeting place for many not just folks in your party. IN the matchmaking services you're never playing against the same crowd. It's always different folks especially in a big community. Different story on a dedicated server. It's like Cheers. It's a bar atmosphere with friends and regulars.
Also very easy to streamline the dedicated server experience for newbs. Battlefield did this 4 years ago. It put a shortcut on your desktop that instantly got you into the game when you clicked on it. They could take this further and use average rank of players on a server as another matching variable.
Last dedicated servers are cheaper than ever to rent or more feasible than ever to set up at home.
And of course smoother gameplay. Flag this | Edit this post |

| The EU just fined Intel $1.5 billion for anti-competitive practices. Too soon to change their ways yet I guess.
This really speaks of a monopoly. Same thing MS did with Windows and IE etc. Intel is forcing manufacturers to buy their cpu & chipset by pricing their cpu alone at nearly twice as much as the package. Flag this | Edit this post |

| It's interesting because the Wii's success seems like it will force Sony and MS to reconsider making the most cutting edge graphics console they can make next-generation.
IN turn the pc would seem like it would become more attractive to the graphics whore core gamer than before. Flag this | Edit this post |

| NO way they make a camera.
While I don't know how to use half the crap on my CAnon camera, I can still just turn it on and click the button and it takes nice shots.
I don't think they'll stretch themselves that thin either. Canon would be hard to beat.
I also don't see any advantage to having a touchscreen on a camera.
iPhoto is also Apple's most used iLife app on Macs. It recognizes a ton of cameras and downloads your photos with no trouble with all these easy to use to options. It's not perfect, but it's quite nice.
Maybe they put a camera into the iPods? This doesn't seem too "state of the art future" like though.
Nah. I'm going to place my bet on a .......
Large screen Ipod Touch.
and Apple will release it in $550 price range with an ~8" screen. Flag this | Edit this post |

| INtel's argument is general load balancing will be faster because all their silicon can be used to do calculations while much of the specialized graphics hardware often sits unused.
The other argument seems to be that it will ultimately be easier to program for. The architecture won't change over the years. There will just be more cores. Tens then hundreds then thousands.
The proof is in the pudding. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Yeah it seems like overkill given the lack of upcoming games that need the power in these new cards.
Is there still a market for these expensive cards? It seems like the era of the big budget flashy pc game that pushes video cards that aren't even out on the market yet is over. Piracy and consoles and budget increases have done those games in. It doesn't seem like Nvidia has recognized this. No new flashy pcgames means a lot less interest in high end vid cards. | Live is an over-priced accessory.
And it doesn't cost any more to run Live than it costs Ps3 developers to support voice and friend's lists in their games. Let's not talk about all the dedicated servers in PS3 games compared to Live games either. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I think MS actually needs to lower their price more than Sony does.
LIve is way over-priced if you know how much instant messaging and voice servers actually cost. (Then apply that to the economies of scale that LIve enjoyes.) It's really the same as buying the $99 360 wi-fi adapter MS makes. It's an overpriced accessory.
You'll find more dedicated servers on the PS3's free online service too.
Not saying it's not great to have a friend's service etc, but it's going to be a tougher and tougher sell outside that hardcore market. $50/yr is a ~game/yr. If you have more than 1 person using the 360 in the house then you have to pay $100/yr unless you want to lose some features of the service by playing as a guest.
I mean the 360 is actually $600 over 5 years if you include Live service. And folks say the Ps3 is expensive? Flag this | Edit this post |

| I didn't think much of Bioshock except it had nice production values. Otherwise it's pretty much just a standard shooter.
Actually what's sad it the top pc games in the list are all on consoles too.
If you don't like rts games then you might as well get a console.
I would probably have put Burning Crusade on the list as well. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Great Article!!!! I like that you tested the rig with a few different cpus and budget ones at that.
I've been waiting for an article like this.
Another cpu to consider is the Intel E2160. It's $80 and supposedly can be highly overclocked. You'd need to get a mb with overclocking options. Did that Gigabyte mb have OC options? I'll have to go back and double-check your article.
It's good that you do your part to dispel the massive pcgaming costs thousands of dollars myth. It's ironic that consoles are more $$$$ than ever and gaming pcs are cheaper than ever.
Anyway please do more budget type articles. I think that part of the market needs more explaining that the high-end. I mean if you want the fastest rig then it's easy to find. Just locate the most expensive parts. The lower end and middle part of the market though is alot more complicated. Flag this | Edit this post |

| also you can barely tell the difference between DX9 and DX10 in those screenshots. Some of them I honestly can't tell the difference.
It's going to be up to a game like Crysis to show us that in motion DX10 will look so much better. I think almost all hands-on with that game on various sites has been with it running in DX9. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Great article.
Do the following to get the $750 pc:
Take the $1000 pc. Replace the vidcard and cpu with the 320mb 8800gts ($270) and an E2160 intel cpu ($85 & highly overclockable afaik) respectively. Next get a $50 hard drive instead of the $80 one.
And wha la - instant $755 pc. And nearly as fast. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Wii is the next winner. It's the console for everyone. IT's the least expensive and most fun (and freshest) outta box experience.
The 360 remains the domain of the hardcore. It won't do much better than the Xbox. Halo 3 won't help it. The new 'Arcade' re-brand of the core model could help, but I think the Wii is hip and much better outta box experience for folks that like games, but aren't married to them.
And the PS3 is the device no one can afford yet I think there's some respect for it. The problem, as was noted, is that by the time it drops in price, developers could already be abandoning the platform.
Nintendo shows the videogame business is an entertainment business first and foremost and most consumers aren't hardcore gamers. The transition to hd was the perfect time to show that games aren't all about the graphics espcially as the images you were already looking at weren't bad on the eyes and hdtvs cost a pretty penny still. | Eh I think the game is a bit of a mirage and is pretty conventional underneath it all. I'm not done yet, but it's a pretty basic fps with some nice shiny graphics and a pretty interesting atmosphere/tone to it.
HL2 destroys it on the gameplay front with a ton of more variety. IT also introduces characters that are much easier to emphasize with.
oh btw, the game has adaptive difficulty as an option if I remember right. IT's probably why the difficulty ebbs and flows for you. (just a hunch.) So what happens is you .....Do good and it gets harder. It gets harder and you do bad. Do bad and it gets easier. It gets easier and you do good again. Rinse wash and repeat.
