| The public use of things like cars and airplanes have enormous benefits for society that far outweigh their potential harm. A class 4 laser has almost no benefit for the average public, with a very significant potential for harm. Do you understand the difference?
You don't realize that most life-changing injuries caused by these lasers will probably be pranksters and ignorant fools that will play with them like they are toys, because this is their main attraction as this is the way they are marketed as being like a 'Star Wars light saber'. They wont realize that even a slight, glinting partial reflection off of almost any surface could instantly blind them or someone else up to a very large distance around them. | | I'm starting to get the impression that you just can't grasp or appreciate the unique problems a class 4 laser can present in the wrong hands. I am very grateful that people like you aren't involved in recognizing emergent issues and making new laws. What part of "from a mile away without any risk of being noticed by anyone" did you not understand? Flag this | Edit this post |

| How about pyromaniacs? They could start as many brush fires as they want from a mile away without any risk of being noticed by anyone.
People should contact their local representative about how class 4 lasers should be banned and made illegal to possess outside of licensed facilities ASAP. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Yeah, I see what you mean. Maybe the government should also let the general public make their own breeder nuclear reactors too. If someone is going to contaminate a neighborhood with radioactivity, they are going to contaminate a neighborhood. Why should we let the government put arbitrary limitations on our freedom like that? Oh I don't know... maybe because the benefit of restricting the potential harm to society far outweighs the cost?
How is something that will randomly create an extreme hazard for anyone, including the user, within at least 200 yards a "great alternative to firearms for defense"?
I often hear people like you go on about how the government should not restrict YOUR rights. How about MY right not to need to worry about some asshole easily getting a class 4 laser and waving it around a sports arena and instantly damaging my or my family's retinas? Do my rights matter at all? Self-centered much? Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Yeah sure you want your mother carrying one of these. Apparently all it takes is 0.5% of the power from this laser to permanently cause retinal damage. So looking at the laser dot from almost any surface will be extremely dangerous for anyone's eyes, including the user. If anyone happens to catch a stronger reflection: instant and permanent blindness! These should be restricted to situations where full safety protocols and training are in place. Allowing the public to buy these has to be one of the single most idiotic things I have read in a long time. People WILL be blinded by these, all so a bunch of nerds who get excited by tech toys can play with them. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | The M60 was ridiculous. Not only was it's damage relative to other weapons way too high, it was also way too accurate. On a stats chart showing the percentage of total kills, the M60 was higher than the next 2 weapons combined. The aimbot hackers loved it. What was DICE thinking making such an overpowered weapon?? Didn't they do ANY play testing? Now they made the tracer gun 4 X faster, so the blackhawk gets shot down within seconds every time. Nobody will use it now. WHAT IS DICE THINKING? | | I'm not sure what I think about DLC. Of course it's great to get free new maps, and it keeps the community from fragmenting. But from another perspective, paying for new maps creates an incentive for developers to make new high quality maps, so it is much more likely that they will keep making more. Otherwise, they will have a meeting, and say "OK, should we allocate expensive man-hours to making free maps, or should we have them work on a new game that will cover our costs and make profits?...hmmmm" Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I think latency will be the issue, not bandwidth. Basically, it is video that they are sending, and they are supposed to have some good compression schemes. I think it could work if they put servers in every major city to keep latency down. It's actually a pretty cool idea. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I just got this on the weekend, and for me the whole multiplayer interface is frustrating. If I click to join a server that apparently has open slots, almost every time it pauses for a second, and then kicks me back to the browser. I have to click it 20 times to have any chance of actually joining the server. Sometimes the game crashes to desktop. If I try to add server to favorites, it just endlessly says processing or something. For a few hours, I couldn't even get the server list. What's going on? I thought dedicated server browsers and master servers were a very mature technology. They worked fine for Quake 3 and Call of Duty 1 7 years ago. The game itself is pretty cool though. | | With all of the ingenuity it takes to design these complex algorithms that squeeze every bit of performance out of these advanced graphic cards, it's incredibly ironic that they are having problems with simply making sure the cooling fan is running properly. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I'm guessing that this has to do with Activision making the COD franchise subscription based. It would be nice to see the entire core creative team leave Infinity Ward along with Jason West, and start up a new studio, but a lot of those people probably don't want to leave a very secure career with a hugely successful franchise for a risky venture with shaky financing. | | I think what it comes down to, is whether or not you are a fan of the unique type of gameplay unavoidably dictated by this franchise. It is definitely not the straightforward gameplay offered by Call of Duty (which I also have enjoyed for years), and there are slower paced and more complex game mechanics involved. If you don't like AvP, then you probably wouldn't like any AvP game from any developer. You may think it would be cool to play game with aliens and predators, but you just don't enjoy the concept when actually implemented in a game. I just don't believe a big budget developer and publisher like Infinity Ward/Activision could have done a substantially better job at making a similar AvP game. It may have somewhat better production values, but probably very similar core gameplay. Actually, IW/Activision would probably refuse to even attempt to develop a niche game with 3 very asymmetrical opponents, melee focused, with complex game mechanics restricted to adhering to a movie franchise. | From the review: "It shouldn’t take anybody longer than 5-6 hours to complete all three campaigns."
What difficulty level did you use? I set it to hard, completed the marine and alien campaigns, and I'm not sure how long it's taken but it must be way more than 8 hours so far. As the marine, a couple of the main battle scenes against the Praetorians were pretty tough (and scary!). I was killed and had to restart the scene many times. As the alien, the battles against the Predators took quite a long time as well. I also looked around for the hidden messages and tokens scattered around the levels. Again, I found the SP campaign to be immersive and a lot of fun, and I think I have been playing games long enough to know what is waste of money and what isn't. I think it's pretty cool they got Lance Henrikson (Bishop) to do some voice acting.
"Melee prompts tell you what to press - Any time you are engaging an enemy within melee range, you will be explicitly informed of which button/key to press in order to counter what they’re doing at that moment."
I haven't seen this in SP campaign or multiplayer. I don't get any prompts of what key to press except "Press E to Grab" when the enemy is vulnerable to a trophy or stealth kill. I'm wondering if I'm playing the same build as you or something. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Well I just got this yesterday, and I've played the marine campaign through the first 3 levels and played a few matches on MP. I can't deny that I actually had a lot of fun playing it so far, and the SP has got my adrenaline going quite a few times. I think the graphics are good, and the levels were well done, and they did a good job capturing the ambiance of the franchise. Yeah, it's obvious it was made with the XBox360 in mind, but today this is an unavoidable consequence of its dominance in the market. Yes, matchmaking sucks, but I found games with enough players within 30 seconds every time I tried. Obviously it will be a lot better when dedicated servers are released. Overall, I just can't understand why this game would get less than a 70% score. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I remember a lot of skepticism about Nintendo's Wii before it went on sale. We all know how incredibly wrong that assumption was. If Natal offers a truly different, fun, and immersive gaming experience, all it takes is for one killer Microsoft app (Wii's was Wii Sports) to entice millions to buy the Natal. Then there will be a huge incentive for developers to make games for it. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I would have preferred team deathmatch in the demo rather than free-for-all, but I think the core gameplay is awesome. So the full version with different game modes, and dedicated servers should be even better. I've played all 3 species now, and each one has their own unique strengths and weaknesses and and you have to adapt your strategy to them or you get owned. I have seen all 3 species dominate a match, so it seems balanced. Ambushing from the ceilings as an alien is fun! Flag this | Edit this post |

| Yeah I tried it out, and I thought it was really well done. Except the P2P aspect. Playing the marines is scary!!
Rebellion confirmed dedicated server support in an interview:Jason Kingsley, the CEO, said: "Despite rumours, Rebellion has always been planning to support dedicated servers for Aliens vs Predator PC and we can now officially confirm that this is the case."
Hopefully the full version will have dedicated servers, with the option to select P2P matchmaking. Flag this | Edit this post |

| MW2 PC has not outsold MW1 PC. First of all, this is not an official IW statement. It is a forum post by IW community manager Robert Bowling in response to the revelation that PC sales only made up 3% of total MW2 sales in the UK. I believe he is saying that first week sales for MW2 are higher than first week sales for COD4. Not even close to the same thing as total sales. COD4 sales probably gained momentum after launch through word of mouth. MW2 sales were probably very good out of the gate due to the goodwill earned from COD4, but I DO NOT expect the momentum to continue. On Amazon, PC MW2 started out in the top 20 across all game platforms, but is now 66th, far behind Dragon Age and Left 4 Dead 2. (update: now 83rd on Amazon) Also, another post pointed out the following:
Funny because my math comes up with this...
Breaking the sales down by console, Xbox 360 took 56% of total sales, PS3 took 38% and the remaining 6% of sales were for the PC version."
6% of 9.4 million is 564,000 - copies.
CoD 4 for PC sold around 2.4 million copies.
So MW2 PC sales are down 1,836,000 compared to CoD 4 for PC. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Your points are spot on. I pretty much thought the exact same things about the SP while I was playing a 'friends' copy (I eagerly bought every previous COD). I thought the story was extremely implausible and contrived, and I lost any sense of immersion. Does anyone seriously think the MW2 plot could actually come close to happening in the real world?? The game has changed from Saving Private Ryan and Blackhawk down to James Bond.
"200mph while firing an automatic pistol sideways with one hand..." haha I laughed reading this.
I thought there were quite a few examples of how the game catered to the game consoles. Quite a few textures looked to be very low resolution, especially things like signs. I have watched videos of multiplayer, and it looks kind of like the arcade mode in COD4 with point numbers popping up all over the place. I even saw a bunch of dollar bills popping out of an enemy that was killed. I can't verify, but I read a post that sniper rifle sway and gun recoil in general have been decreased, probably a concession to the console controller accuracy limitations, and to make the game easier to get kills for the casual gamer who isn't interested in spending a lot of time to develop skill. It's obvious that Activision (Bobby Kotick) laid down the law that the new MW2 was to be console focused from the ground up and made more casual gamer friendly, and then directly ported to the PC. Some people at IW probably protested, but Kotick has made it very clear that Activision is not interested in niche or enthusiast gaming, and will only focus on the mass casual gamer. They are leaving the enthusiast market to niche titles like ARMA2. So now that PC games are just console ports, we can now forget seeing first rate games that take advantage of the latest PC graphics hardware. The game consoles capabilities now indirectly represent a limit for future PC games. We are now seeing the effects the huge success of the Wii is having on the rest of the industry. | "half the time i had full green bars (whatever that means)"
Each ping bar represents 100 ms. So 4 bars means anything from 0-100 ping. The host player is 0 ping, and has an advantage obviously. There's a way to increase the resolution of the ping indicator, and a lot of players report 100 ms is about the best ping one can get from this p2p system. Average ping is higher. A lot of people report stuttering and shot registration problems even with 4 bars. What they are probably getting is packet loss, which there isn't any indicator for. Flag this | Edit this post |
