| 6000 TV eh?
none of the 3d tv's out cost this much.
I paid $1950 with free shipping for my panasonic VT25 50" set. the sony 46" one can be had for around 2100 or so, and the samsung of similar size for around 1700.
This isn't the year 2000, TV's that are very good are actually not that expensive anymore.
And just wait for the 2011 models and they'll go at even cheaper prices, i would not be surprised if the TV i just bought would end up at around ~1500 when the 2011 models come out. Flag this | Edit this post |

| This isn't new at all, people have been doing this with polarized projectors for a long time now, and TI showed this a while back on their RPTVs with shutter glasses.
And now.. sony has the patent for this, guess it's just to cover their asses. Flag this | Edit this post |

| "Looks very very impressive! Good to see id coming back into the technological arms race."
Umm, they're not...
Hell, the only company left that you could make that claim for was Crytek, and even they dropped out of the race.
See, it used to be the ID of the old days would make games that would run like crap on even the fastest PC available, it wasn't till like a year or two later that you could get good performance on their games...
That is until Quake 3 came out, which was much more forgiving.
Then doom 3 was announced, and when they did, it sure gave us the impression that they were at it once again... but by the time it came out the videocards that the game was designed to run on were very old news.
Crysis was the only game that has come out "recently" that is reminiscent of the old ID software.
I mean, think about it, this game is designed with 2006 hardware in mind, we've come a LOOONG way since then.
You can't really blame developers, technology is advancing faster than they can keep up with these days, and obviously the majority of the users don't have powerful machines to begin with, so it's a perfectly understandable position.
But it's good to see that at least they are giving us the illusion of the old days because of how much they seem to be able to squeeze out of very old hardware. I'm looking forward to this game. Flag this | Edit this post |

| This is why we use science for almost everything these days, no agenda there.
Science is by far the best method of thinking we have.
Which is why whenever i see crap like this my head wants to explode, because obviously these people don't really care about true explanations, and are content with gossip and stories they make up themselves.
Now, i'm not saying you shouldn't watch these things. free speech is great, because it lets you see just how stupid and manipulative some groups of people are.
But if you believe these things, shame on you. Flag this | Edit this post |

| That movie is complete crap (zeitgeist, won't even give this a shot since it seems to be in the same vein)... they seem to start off on the right foot by criticizing religion, but they do so in what i thought to be not the strong arguments against it to begin with. (they simply compare it to other myths, and don't talk about relevant things... like evidence)
Then i got to the part where "loose change" is used as a reference, i stopped watching right there.
So guys... it's OK to be a skeptic, it's the default position.
But when the evidence debunks an idea or belief you had, and you don't change your point of view that makes you a bigot.
All of these documentaries make stuff up on the spot. They have little or no credible sources, and there's never any evidence to support their arguments. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Yeah, the problem with corssfire is that when it doesn't work properly, it flat out sucks.
There's many games that i play that are plagued with CF issues, and ATi never gets around to fix them. (still waiting on CF support for SFIV... i actually have to disable one of the cores of my 4870x2 so it doesn't bug out in the ship stern level)
I don't think i'm ever getting a CF setup ever again, don't think i'll try my luck with SLI either, though i hear it's better overall. Flag this | Edit this post |

| WOW, you are... so wrong.
You are confusing pixel density with aliasing, an artifact tied to 3d graphics. This is not video or photos, where aliasing due to rendering doesn't exist for obvious reasons.
And besides, you are wrong about pixel density anyway (given a large enough screen, you'll see the pixel structure on almost any display, let alone pixel detail, meaning the pixels themselves will look less detailed) Flag this | Edit this post |

| Well, actually this announcement makes me wish i had gotten a 5870 the second it came out.
If the prices for the new nVidia card i have seen are true. Then the only prices ATi will have to lower at all, are their 5970 prices. And that's if nVidia can even come close to the performance of that one with a single chip.
So, holding out till nVidia came out with something in hopes that ATi will lower their price might take even longer than it already has.
There's no way in hell nVidia is going to be able to compete in price with ATi, i'm pretty skeptical that ATi will lower the prices of the 5870 at all because nVidia won't even be able to match them.
But, lets see hope it's at least good.
I currently own a 4870x2, and the only real reason i can think off of getting a new nVidia card is 3d stereo support.
The only way to get 3d games with ATi is with a third party driver. (i used to have a dual projector setup, worked OK, but it has limitations... read on)
While the 3d stereo works, Crossfire doesn't work with it, and much worse than that, neither do the per-game profile optimizations. The third party driver breaks them, so you end up with speed comparable to turning AI off when using 3d in an ATi card with IZ3d drivers.
ATi says it will "support" 3d stereo with 10.3 drivers, but the only thing that statement means, is that they'll finally let IZ3d and other third party drivers add support for shutter glasses. Which is hardly any different from their current "support" (non existent, it's all the up to the third party driver, and it's slow because of the reasons i gave earlier, and will continue to be slow in 10.3. Except you'll finally be able to use shutter glasses along with the other methods that do currently work, such as dual projection, the method i used)
So, basically the one real advantage nVidia will haver over ATi is proper 3d stereo support.
Nvidia's 3d works with both SLI and game profiles, which translates to much better performance than the IZ3d driver. (to be fair, if it wasn't for the performance issues it'd be a really good solution, and it's not IZ3d's fault to begin with.)
So, if 3d stereo is your cup of tea, i don't think ATi will give you your money's worth. whats the point of having two 5970's in crossfire if you can only use one chip out of four with the IZ3d drivers, and can't use the extremely important per-game profiles?
I sure wish that the 10.3 "support" meant something other than adding the one method of 3d stereo that IZ3d couldn't implement due to lack of a simple driver hook.
All ATi is doing with 10.3 is letting the IZ3d driver know which is the right image, and which is the left one so the glasses will sync properly with the refresh rate.
If ATi is to really support 3d, they either need to come up with their own 3d drivers like nVidia, or they need to be more open to third party companies so they can implement crossfire and game profiles. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Well, you did make it sound like a "the sky is falling post"
The truth is, this is simply a reminder to consumers that current telcos are ripping us off in a big way.
Think about it for a second, most computer related bandwidth interfaces, processor transistor count, etc. has all gone up exponentially in performance in a very predictable manner for a long time now.
I've always slammed telcos as trying to be the "exception to the rule" when it comes to performance increases that we KNOW are happening tech-wise, but they won't do because they don't have to, due to the very extreme lack of competition. (i mean, it's so bad that people think net neutrality is the real issue, when in fact net neutrality would be a moot point with enough real competitors)
People that doubt this only need to look at Japan and Korea.
Korea has always been a front runner in broadband. and Japan leaped froward from having some of the worse Internet service in a first world country, to being the best by far now.
And to all the people that think that "oh, it's cause they have less ground to cover" have a good argument, think again.
telcos wouldn't need to wire the entire country, just the cities, much like they do in Japan, so no. it's not a valid argument. Because if anything it shows how mediocre telcos are because they simply can be and get away with it.
But, sooner or later technology always wins. If google is the company that has to step up to show them this, so be it.
Maybe this will finally force telcos to get up to date, we're on 2010 for fucks sake. Flag this | Edit this post |

| The nice thing about free speech is that it lets us realize how other people think, regardless of how fucked up it is.
For instance, Muslim extremists have free speech, and it's respected (just go to youtube and see all the signs they hold that say "death to america" etc, etc)
So, free speech is good, because it lets us see just the kind of assholes we're up against.
Free speech can also cause a healthy backlash. So you get to exercise your right at your own risk. (in this case, he risked looking like an idiot, mission accomplished) Flag this | Edit this post |

| "you are dreaming about that price tab. LCD manufacturers are finding ways to "stay relevant" and continue to charge the same prices for hardware "improvements" that have diminishing returns on the overall consumer experience."
Bullshit, go back 10, no. just 3 years. and see how much you had to pay for a 24" LCD monitor. (around 500 bucks about 2 years ago, and almost two grand when they first came out) and see how much you have to pay for one now. (under 200 bucks)
As far as HDTV's go, they started at 10,000, huge and bulky, or slim and shity.
Now you can get a huge plasma screen or LCD flat panel for less than 1 grand that look amazing.
Obviously you can't expect the cheapest prices for the current year model, or high end line ups. But if you stay away from those, you can get really good stuff for very reasonable prices. something that seemed impossible just a few years ago. Flag this | Edit this post |

| OMG, who would've thought people would eventually realize that the Wii is running on ancient hardware and are paying more for less?
Seriously, with the PS3 and 360 becoming more affordable, but being far more advanced, this was inevitable. Of course Wii sales would drop.
Third party support has never really been there.
If you consider that a multi platform game (basically a game that is supposed to be the same on all consoles) would pretty much look like shit on the Wii compared to the other two versions.
So, the only way to do a third party game that wouldn't look like ass, would be to design it with ancient hardware in mind. It'd still look a lot worse than games in the PS3 / Xbox 360, but at least since it's designed with the Wii in mind they could make it run smooth and look the best it can.
But this of course would mean using all their resources to a game that has to compete with Nintendo head to head, on a market that is mainly casual or non gamers.
The only thing that surprises me about Wii sales drop, is that it didn't happen earlier.
And what will happen with their "next gen" console? they better think of a new gimmick, because the new controller with obsolete hardware combo will most likely not work again since the novelty of the controller has worn off significantly.
To the guy claiming that the Wii's success somehow has bought them a ticket to be #1 on the next generation, i think you're wrong.
I could definitely tell when the original Xbox came out, that MS's next console system would be able to compete with Sony, and it did, beyond my expectations even.
I just don't see how you can get the same impression from Nintendo though, they pulled a hell of a trick with the Wiimote, but that's what it is, a trick.
I just don't see lightning striking twice for them, this time they have to get serious on the hardware and features side. Flag this | Edit this post |
