| the final nail in sony's coffin would be if Microsoft designed a console that wasn't a bunch of strung together shoeboxes.
external power brick, external HD DVD player, you'd actually think the stuff would have fit if the designers didn't accidentally dent the sides in on the main box.
all kidding aside, I like to see Sony suffer for their mistakes, but I hate to see a console that's judged more on the company's missteps than it's own merits.
that and It just feels weird standing up for Mirosoft (didn't everyone hate them once upon a time?) Flag this | Edit this post |

| actually, Sony has a HUGE stake in Blue Ray with it's studios alone. There are analysts* that seem to think that Blue Ray will win merely for Sony's movie rights alone.
And with Blue Ray outselling HD DVD 3-1, some analysts* are posting that HD DVD will be dead in 2008.
Premature? sure.. but naysayers are missing the point that right now Blue Ray is firmly in the lead, and that puts Sony in an enviable position -- not just on the PS3 front, but for movie and media rights as well.

| every article I read tends to state price of the xbox 360 vs the PS3..
and how the PS3 is going to hurt because of it's high price.
But if you bought an xbox 360 with HD DVD and 60GB HDD (whoops.. can't have that yet), you'd blow past the price of that 'expensive' PS3.
so really, I'm not sure if that's a truly viable argument anymore.
And I still think that gaming technology wise, things are still up in the air a bit. The edge is on the xbox 360 tho.. can't deny that. But it could easily change with a bit of developer maturity.
The one thing the xbox does have that I think is it's true edge is the online capabilities... I wonder if Sony will EVER catch up, but then again, the business model is totally different too. It's not a service you have to constantly pay for to get the full experience out of. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » interesting... I find it interesting after their recent announcement of partnering with Nissan on GT HD just two days ago (IGN).
Seems like a lot of work and effort to just throw out...and to make us wait 2 more years.
If it's true, it's another severe knock against the PS3 I don't think they could afford. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I think it would be quite difficult for Sony to suddenly fall to 3rd place just for the fact of their HUGE pre-existing installed user base.
That, and Nintendo isn't even really competing in the same markets as Sony and MS. Sony and MS are competing directly in commodotized gaming, Nintendo is more than happy to sit in it's more profitable boutique niche. There's a huge difference.
I think this time around, there's been a lot of hype around consoles that have distinctly shaped the public's opinion on which one is going to win.
Everyone says Nintendo has a winner with it's Wii, but honestly, how many gamers are going to go 5 years waving their arms around to bargain bin graphics? It's novel now, because you haven't worn out your rotator cuff, or given yourself carpel tunnel playing simulated fishing. I'm not saying the Wii is a bad thing, only that it's most highly touted feature is also the biggest long term unknown for the system.
As for blue ray vs HD DVD.. heding your bets on blue ray isn't an entire waste of money as hedging them on HDDVD would be if it bombed out. There's no saying a blueray player couldn't be flashed to read/play HDDVD. The blueray hardware should be capable of playing HDDVD tho, there's no such possibility with HDDVD's hardware.
So I honestly don't see the PS3's death as many seem to be forecasting. Their only direct competitor in the "we've got the bestest hardware" gaming market is MS. Who has a headstart, but doesn't have the global penetration of Sony.
Blue ray is yet to be sorted out, but HDDVD and blueray are going to be held back more by the lack of HD TV ownership than by who supports what... I think for sony, it could work to their advantage that they'll sell more PS3s with blueray than there are TV's out there that support it. When the majority of people are ready to move to hidef, there's a good chance they'll already have a box that'll play a given movie format.
(it's most likely that consoles could very well determine this next format war winner instead of the format winning the console war). Flag this | Edit this post |
