1) Agreed. There are PLENTY of silly/fun songs I very much enjoy. It's the ones about "ho's, drugs, pimpin, Kristal.." etc, etc that I was referring to..as you said, 95%+ rubbish.
2) Agreed also. I see SO many parents who just don't care and let their kids do whatever they want..VERY. BAD. (although kids doing this is NOT race specific, preppy white kids who don't listen to their parents "usually" aren't going to go the whole "thug/Gagnsta" route..again, a cultural thing as you said..)
3) I know culture matters, but it shouldn't be used as an excuse..that was more or less my meaning in what I posted. I know where you are raised and your upbringing usually 90-95% defines who you are, but people don't have to succumb to the "stereotypical culture" thing just because of their race or where they were raised. I was raised in THE cajun/redneck state (my last name is very cajun..lol), and I try VERY hard NOT to be the stereotype.
4) I wanted to add a thanks. Sometimes people can read something like what I posted and they automatically jump the gun and assume I am a certain way. I appreciate your open mindedness and your ability to read what I wrote and not what you thought it might say. It's appreciated.

| While I agree that the game is bad (well, at least GTA:SA), it is ultimately up to the parents to decide what games their kids play.
I work part time at Gamestop (Love the discounts), and we are always warning the parents about games like GTA and Saints Row (I've played both..Saints Row is a FAR more vulgar and crude game IMO..)
I am always SOOOOO pleased when a parent says "No"..and what it sad is it's always a 10-12 yr old kid wanting the game..and sadly it always seems to be stereotypical as far as race is concerned.
(just for reference, I live in Louisiana..just so geographical attitudes and persona's can be set..)
(it's always GTA, Madden/NCAA or Midnight club..with an occasional fighting game thrown in there for good measure..like I've said before, they stereotype themselves..)
People will argue about why games like that are purchased. Personally, I like the GTA open world "go anywhere, do anything" scenario. The story is usually little more than fluff in those games anyway. That's why "I" buy games of that type (which is rare in and of itself).
Why do you think the 10-12 yr old and the usual "stereotyped" buyer purchases the game? Because it represents the whole "gangsta/kill people" mentality that seems to be prevalent and overun in black "culture".
GTA 3 was bad, but still not terrible. GTA Vice City was almost light hearted in it's "80's" portrayal of things..
Then came GTA San Andreas..with it's drugs, pimps, ganstas, etc, etc, etc..needless to say far worse, IMO, than any of the series based solely on the content and it's impact on the buyer.
For example..someone buy Vice City isn't going to do the things or try to reenact the scenarios seen in the game (that was oversimplified but I think you get the point)..whereas San Andreas is the opposite.
The usual buyer (see earlier mention in this post) is someone who only buys San Andreas because it represents something to want to be able to. They WANT to be that THUG/GANGSTA..they WANT to do the things in that game. They think dealing drugs and whacking people is "Where it at!"..
..and because of the culture, they are more or less able to do anything they see in the game. The music they listen too (rap, usually) only adds to that fact. The rappers (I refuse to call ANYONE without any musical talent or ability a "musician"..much less an "artist") themselves bombard the buyer with the whole gangsta/thug thing non stop..
(gee, is it any wonder that kids who listen to rap are such jerks on the whole?)
(someone tried to argue once that there is "good rap"..funny, I don't recall seeing that on MTV. They also tried to argue about the "extreme black/metal" deaths that occurred in the 80s. I explained to him those were in an EXTREME case. You don't hear black/death on the radio/MTV. They don't condone guns and voilence on every other album cover, song or video. Not to mention that rappers forget they (sadly) influence millions upon millions of buyers..)
So instead of trying to portray an image less violent, Rappers instead feed the youth with all the negative and bad influences they can..
The culture on a whole (at least in this state) is overrun with the whole "gangsta/thug" mentality. (just for the record, since I know I'll be accused of this, no I am NOT racist..merely stating facts as they are in this state).
I hear all the time about people think because I state things like I did above that I am racist or something silly like that. But it's always from people in a different state..when they get here they see everything I am talking about and then they know it's not racist at all, it's just a matter of fact..
(and as cliche as it may sound, one of my best friends is actually black..we've been good friends for 20 yrs..granted he doesn't act like a thug/gangsta, but my point is I don't judge him because of his race.)
Soldier36, your point isn't necessarily valid. CoD sets up a gaming scenario where you are defending your country. I don't personally see anything wrong with that. GTA isn't about that. It's just about random acts of violence..big difference IMO..
..that being said, you ARE correct about the parenting and moral issues, but the culture I referred to (at least here in Louisiana) seems to lack both. Throw in the afore mentioned Rap and it can't and usually doesn't end well..
Anyway, didn't mean to go on a tangent..sorry about that.
Personally I see nothing wrong with Bill Cosbys' comments. I am a parent myself..and I do EVERYTHING I can to monitor my kids. While I may let them play games like CoD and Halo 3, they were raised to know it's a game. They weren't raised listening to violent or influential "music" like rap. They know right from wrong, etc, etc.
(it may sound silly, but for the longest time we wouldn't even buy them toy guns..just another little thing to help against that mindset)
(I don't see playing games like Halo 3 being a problem..but the minute the aliens invade I'll be sure to worry about my letting my kids play such a "violent" game..)
Killing monsters in a game? Harmless. Defending your country in a game? Not totally harmless but ok. Random acts of violence among other crass and crude acts in a game? Bad. Very bad.
In the end, it does come down to the parent to monitor the kids, but it also comes down to the environment and the child's upbringing. If my kids play GTA I am still not 100% ok with it but it's counterbalanced by their morals in their upbringing, and I also refuse to let them listen to Rap of any sort..the less negative influence the better.
I know this post seems fragmented and disjointed..I haven't posted in a while and I need get out of the office. Still I think I said what I basically wanted to say.

...where his ever changing computer and video game setup boggles the mind (those who even occasionally read his posts know that what he owns changes every other day...even he can't keep what he owns straight..)
For a while he would bash any and all video game consoles, then he suddenly started worshiping the PS3, but still has enough hatred for anything XBOX related for a dozen fanboys..
The old saying is that if you ignore him enough he'll go away, but sadly he's a persistent little bugger who likes to show his ignorance and fanboy side every chance he can.
I personally take great pleasure in belittling his comments and pointing out every flaw and showing how much of a fanboy he really is..

Now if it had anything even remotely similar to the Cross Media Bar I could see why you say something like that, but this new UI isn't anything even close to that.

Soldier or not, you're still pretty much an egotistical jerk for lack of a better word. I respect the military (usually anyway, although some of them can be pretty much jerks on occasion), but it's sad to think the fate of the US (I assume you're in the US, so forgive me if I'm mistaken) lies in the hands of people like you..
..and I've had a PS3 for a while (on my second one actually. Sold my first one as there was basically nothing to play on it)..so let's not even try to play that card. I'm also on my 2nd Wii as, with the PS3, there was basically nothing to play..and they are both still more or less gathering dust while my 360 gets played every day.
...AND for the record, being able to purchase expensive things DOESN'T make you, or anyone else, mature. Being older than 18+ doesn't make you mature as a person, only physically. Your attitude and actions are what define a mature person. Bottom line. While I (sort of) respect what you do being in the military, that doesn't change the way you act..
..which again is more or less a self boasting, braggart of a bu**head, for lack of a better word.
Maybe one day you'll not be such the outspoken supposed "know-it-all" you think you are. I am aware everyone has opinions..
..but, unlike yourself, most people on here are "mature enough" (say it with me..."m.a.t.u.r.e.") to portray their thoughts into comments which don't seem like a 14yr old fanboy wrote them.

I do hope the PS3 get's on it's feet. While it's done decently well so far I can tell you I only own 1 PS3 game (motorstorm), and that's because I bought it off a customer for $8 at work. With most games being either multi console (and so far usually better on the 360) or only on the 360 why would I buy games on the PS3?
Killzone 2 look pretty decent, but may follow the originals footsteps (Does look nice graphically though)
Haze? I've seen nothing yet to make it look like the uber FPS it's supposed to be (helmet design is neat though)
Little big planet does look neat, and is one I may pick up.
Gran Turismo looks really nice graphically, but when the full game comes out and you can actually upgrade your cars, let me know.
MGS4 looks really nice also, even though I think Sony expects this thing pull in Halo type numbers, and the MGS series has never been that way. I'm sure it will do well, but I don't think the game will do the numbers they are wanting. I'll probably buy this one when it's used and a bit lower in price.
Resistance 2 again looks nice graphically, but if it still the same twitch based gameplay from the first game I think I'll pass.
..in the meantime try not to be SO obviously biased. Showing at least some level of neutrality definitely makes you look less immature..
...unless the "15 year old who lives with his parents and they buy him whatever he wants" image is the look you're going for..
Then by all means go ahead..the world needs more narrow minded and boastful, self centered, egotistical people like you..

..and buying HD movies new, for me, is basically not going to happen until they come WAY down.

| I only welcome an end to the battle. I, like dbb970s, preferred HD-DVD for basically the exact same reasons..
(I like the IDEA of the dual format disks, but they should've done something about the price. No one wants to pay $30 for an HD-DVD when the same movie on Blu-Ray is $5-$10 less)..
But at least we're are 99% sure HD-DVD is dead.

| Well with this announcement AND the rumor of Toshiba themselves possibly (probably) dumping HD-DVD I think it's finally over.
I was originally pulling for HD-DVD but at least we finally have a victor.
...now if they can just work on that $34.99 price for new Blu-Ray movies I'll be a MUCH happier person.

..I don't see MS helping them out of this. They themselves have said a Blu-Ray add-on for the XBOX 360 was a possibility (which I may buy as long as it's picture quality is on par with the PS3. I'd hate to burn out the drive in my PS3 playing movies..), so I see no real reason for them to back Toshiba or the HD-DVD group.

That scenario is fairly generic. Not quite as much as "kids at a camp with lunatic madman killer on the loose", but still nowhere near specific enough to justify this suit.
I definitely see the MKR group wanting money based on someone else's work. While I love the "Living Dead" movie franchise (well "Land of the Dead" could've definitely been better), this seems silly.
Why don't they go after every Zombie movie? Surely they've infringed in some way that they feel they can capitalize on.

I work part time at a Gamestop (for the discounts mostly, I have a full time job as a phone tech and I do computer work on the side as well) and we've been in extremely short supply, if not totally out, of XBOX 360s since right after the holidays.
Every time I visit a Wal-mart it seems they are either low or totally out of XBOX 360s as well.
(that being said PS3s seem to be in short supply as well, as least in the few locations I've visited)
Take that as you will.

I never said I traded in my XBOX 360, only my HD-DVD drive. Are you trying to read what you want to read? I was VERY specific when I said I "traded in my HD-DVD and movies"..I ALSO said I have a "PS3 for my Blu-Ray movies"..
..not sure how much clearer I could've been.
(..and when there are two sides to choose from one will eventually be the wrong one. I was hoping for HD-DVD, but I had a PS3 in case Blu-Ray won..and for the occasional good PS3 game)..
Maybe next time I'll draw you a picture..I'll even let you pick out the crayon so it's a color you like.
I was originally pulling for HD-DVD, but since it appears the war is all but over I am glad it's basically been decided which format will win, and I never said anything to the contrary. With less DRM, a more standardized feature set on the players, and a lower manufacturing costs I was all for HD-DVD, especially when the initial launch Blu-Ray movies looked worse than HD-DVD due to the codec that was used.
Dribble eh? Well it seems you are the one who :
1) Can't argue my statements and even misreads them to see what you want to see
2) Can't make any kind of intelligent statement
3) Can't seem to get out of the "I'm have angst and I'm angry so I'm going to type in ALL CAPS AND SHOW EVERYONE HOW MUCH I PWN" mode..

Being biased is one thing. Everyone is at least a little biased towards one or more things.
It's how show your bias that tells people how you are as a person, and sadly you're telling everyone how utterly pathetic you are in basically every aspect of your person (basically your just telling everyone that you're an obnoxious a$$ hole more or less..way to go there champ..)
Spreading hatred? Me? Funny, I've never been told that before. I try to be as unbiased as possible when I post comments (as I stated above everyone is at least a little biased, but you're what people call a fanboy, and sadly in the worst way).
I did have an HD-DVD drive for my 360, but when the announcement was made 2 weeks ago that one of the last big backers left I traded in my HD-DVD drive and movies. Thankfully I have my PS3 for my Blu-Ray movies.
Admittedly it's tempting to stoop down to your level and make crass comments and just be rude and crude, but it's more satisfying to be the adult here and show how pathetic you really are..

I totally agree (while I admittedly wanted HD-DVD to win I am glad to finally see, what appears to be, an end to this Hi-Def war.
It will be nice when movies stop being $35 new, but hopefully that will change in time.
Until then, used Blu-Ray movie are my choice.
Please bring on the lower prices to the consumer.

I do agree it seems the Hi-Def format may finally be near it's end..and while I did want HD-DVD to win I am glad I finally won't have to worry about which side to choose.

So what exactly IS your problem? While three blind men in a soundproof room could see and hear your obvious bias towards Blu-Ray, you are bordering on pure and utter hatred.
I have an opinion on the whole Hi-Def format war :
1) Blu-Ray would not be where it is if the PS3 wouldn't have had Blu-Ray built in. Without that the Blu-Ray user base would be a few million less.
2) I don't see HD-DVD coming back regardless of price. I wanted HD-DVD to win (more standardized feature set, less DRM, less manufacturing costs) but it seems the war may be close to over.
See it IS 100% possible to have an opinion and state what you want to say without being a total jerk and, quite frankly, a dick about it.
Take a pill and chill out. No one likes an a$$ hole.

...and I thought I was the only one who noticed Soldier36s so called "level of intelligence"..
But in regards to the topic, I agree with you and Mr. Wielder. Consoles do have their place, as do high end uber PCs, but then there are people like Soldier36 who automatically think that because his mom bought him a $3000 PC that he's supposedly better than everyone else (although I'd wager he was like this before he ever got his PC).
I thought we were all supposed to be gamers. There is nothing wrong with affordable gaming or gaming on a budget. The majority of the gaming public doesn't have $3000 to spend on a new PC every other year, so people quite often incrementally upgrade (more ram, new CPU, new video card) when they can. I'll probably be upgrading at tax time myself.
Maybe when Soldier36 grows up he'll acquire some wisdom along the way and learn not to be the type of person he is..
..or he'll be that way all his life, which is a sad thought.

..while it is true Sony is (probably more than likely anyway) still losing money on the PS3 (albeit most people think just barely), MS hasn't been losing money on the hardware itself as of late.
The RROD $1.x billion issue not with standing, the 360 console cost less to manufacture at this point than the selling price, whereas the PS3 is supposed to still cost more to manufacture than it's selling price.
You are correct in that Nintendo is making a profit on every console sold, and has been since launch. That seems to be their defacto standard console launch plan (which isn't a bad idea when you think about it). ;-)

In regards to your comment, some people WANT BC, which the 40GB lacks completely.
..not to mention a 320GB HDD runs between $180-$200, basically HALF the cost of the 40GB system itself (you have to remember that you HAVE to use 2.5" laptop SATA drives. Normal Desktop drives won't work).

..I thought I was the only one who HATED the triggers. WORST. DESIGN. CHOICE. EVER.
It's EXTREMELY frustrating to play ANY game where the triggers need more than 2 seconds of contact (ANY racing or FPS game). My fingers CONSTANTLY slide off the $%!# things!
I want to know if the new system will retain the BC (I asked this on a different forum out of geniune curiousity and got attacked by an obvious Sony Fanboy, go figure).
I'd love to know who made that design choice though (must've been "Krazy Ken"). ;-)
