» New install on laptop I installed Vista Ultimate x64 on my Acer Ferrari 4000 laptop (AMD Turion ML-34 @ 2.0 Ghz, 1GB RAM). I work for a Micrsoft Gold Partner so we have early access to Vista. I have been a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineed for 10 years. Here are my first thoughts:
* Vista put my laptop to sleep. It wouldn't wake up. Period. Reboot.
* Hibernation locked it up as well.
* Power management shut down the LCD and it would not turn back on. I could hear sound, but no video
* It eats up over 500MB of RAM during normal operation
* It is noticeably slower that XP x64 was on the same laptop
* VMWare Workstation 5.5 will not run
* Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 Beta crashes often (hard to criticize this one, but it didn't do it under XP x64)
* ReadyBoost (using 1GB USB flash drive) didn't seem to speed up anything. It caused my laptop to thrash (heavy HD activity) once and forced a reboot.
* Aero glass has crashed on me once (lost the effect)
This is after only using it for about 5 days. I will probably give it another week, but will likely go back to XP x64.
The only reason I can see for upgrading to Vista is DX10, but games that really need DX10 will be a while in coming. A lot of the "new features" (IE7, Media Player 11, desktop searching, etc) are available for XP. Sure, it looks better, but so what? If that's all I wanted I'd buy a Mac. Flag this | Edit this post |
