| Whatever happened to the concept of 'inncoent until proven guilty'?
Even the FBI did not link OBL to 9/11 - 'we've seen no hard evidence' I think they said.
The US government has commissioned special forces to enter a foreign country with whom it is not at war, to execute a foreign citizen without trial.
How does this square with traditional American values such as rule of law and trial by jury?
It also sets a sinister precedent that allows governments throughout the world to enter foreign countries to assassinate whomever they want. Frankly, Americans cannot now complain if Pakistan were to send an agent to kill an American citizen in the USA. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Does any of this stuff actually affect console or software sales, though?
Sony had their famour rootkit debacle a few years ago but people forgot about that real quick.
Another thing - do you think XBox Live's closed network helps protect Microsoft against this sort of attack? I'd love to see a browser on the 360, but OTOH given MS's total FAIL at making a decent PC browser it could turn out to be a real disaster.
It would be interesting to see MS work with Google to produce a Kinect-enabled Android OS for the next gen... never gonna happen though! Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Well said - it's sad that this basic fact (corporations exist to make money for shareholders) needs to be pointed out, but video game message boards across the internet seem to be populated largely by naive kids who think the companies are there to serve the customers' interests. | I disagree with this premise. 70% of Wii owners didn't upgrade from a Gamecube (which sold only 21 million) but were essentially new entrants to the gaming market, i.e. casual gamers with no history of engaging in regular hardware upgrade cycles.
A certain number of those 55 million 'new customers' will be tempted to upgrade to a Wii HD with an evolved motion control feature, but by no means all of them. The majority of PS3 and XBox owners upgraded from earlier consoles and have already demonstrated their willingness to dump their existing games, consoles and accessories every 5 years. | So what do folks expect Nintendo to come up with to make it worthwhile for Wii owners to want to upgrade? HD visuals alone ain't gonna cut it IMO.
The 360 differentiated itself from the original Xbox with a vastly improved and expanded Live service; HD visuals; large HDDs enabling media library functionality; achievements and now Kinect - i.e. a massive leap in functionality.
I'm not sure what services Nintendo could add to the Wii2 to convince the typical casual owner to splurge on a new system. Hardcore gamers who opt for XBox/PS3 tend to be hungrier for hardware upgrades and happy to spend the cash every 5-6 years. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Discuss? Wii has remained stagnant in terms of technology and everyone who was likely to buy one already has.
XBox keeps pushing the hardware and offering new services, and people like me are finding a reason to buy where there wasn't one a couple of years ago (I got my 360S two months ago). Flag this | Edit this post |

| Yes you should be allowed the right to modify your own hardware - but in this case it is the manufacture and sale of 3rd party devices designed to interfere with another manufacturer's security system. That's different, IMO.
It's like selling an electronic device whose only purpose is to defeat car alarms. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Yeah, controller + Kinect experiences are what interest me most, too. Or even alternative controller configurations, eg gun-shaped, lightsaber-shaped etc.
As you suggest, head tracking, grenade throwing, gun reloading, squad commands, door manipulation, item pickup etc could all be controlled through gestures. Casting spells in RPGs would be awesome... Flag this | Edit this post |

| Hi Joel! I'm another long term member from when it was Thresh's Firing Squad (1998 maybe?) and this page has always been one of my browser startup tabs. Kinda of odd since I dropped PC gaming for the original XBox, and don't even own a console now.
I've always liked this site for its community feel, irreverent editorial style and absence of any noticeable bias or hype. I look forward to that continuing into the future... with maybe a tidy up of the home page as others have mentioned. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Agreed re PS3's 3D plans... it will turn out a shambles. Likewise Move and Kinect will likely be laggy, buggy and not live up to expectations. OTOH, next-gen Kinect on next-gen consoles, on 3D capable TVs could be incredible...
I'm only just about to buy my first 360 (I've been waiting for a better engineered model, the new 360 S is it) so luckily there's a lot of great games on the budget rack to last me the next 4 years or so. No rush for a new console just yet, especially with the economy where it is. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Despite not having yet experienced Kinect, I feel MS is really just testing this tech before the next gen. Once they've had enough feedback, and developers learn how to use Kinect more effectively, Kinect v2 could be a core component of XBox 720, and distinguish it from the competition in the same way the Wii has done this gen.
Kinect has far more *potential* in future than Wiimote or Move tech, IMO. Flag this | Edit this post |

| If MS had admitted problems with Vista at the time, I might have more time for their future announcements.
Admitting fault and promising to do better is a high priority in customer relations. MS' reaction to Vista complaints, and Apple's response to iPhone 4G problems is v disappointing. Flag this | Edit this post |

| WHat I want to see from Kinect is added value to the existing controller. Hand gestures in squad-based shooters, facial mapping on your avatar in online MP, dodging and leaning in FPS through head movements, zooming in and out by leaning forward and back.
Of course we're gonna see some gimmicky stuff like the rafting and the balls, because they're simple games that anyone can play. Doesn't mean there's nothing in it for the hardcore gamer. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I played my original XBox to death (and a few years of online FPS on PC before that). But I'm 32 now, living with my non-gaming g/f and playing much more guitar. No I'm not a 'real gamer' if that's what you want to call it, it's just another thing I can choose to dip into or not.
I'm not convinced that MS have totally fixed their hardware issues... but if I do buy one with Natal this holiday season, there'll be a shedload of great games in the budget section, the XBox UI will be ultra-refined, there will be plenty of downloadable movies available (still quite limited in the UK) and I'll get more HDD for my money than I would have done a year ago.
There are considerable advantages to being a late adopter, especially if you're not some dweeb like Soldier32 who always has to have the latest and greatest. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Agreed - the law may be pretty clear on the matter, but common sense tells us that copyright infringement is NOT the same as theft.
And if the law is merely 'today's set of rules', as paid and lobbied for by organisations with limitless financial resources... then why should we respect that? Flag this | Edit this post |

| Movies tend to have 3-minute trailers which require their own editing, sound and graphics... I really don't see how it is beyond the wit of a developer to release the full first level of a game, disabling functions like game saves and online play if they want to be hardasses.
I'd never watch a movie without a trailer, and I wouldn't buy a game that I hadn't had the chance to try out in some capacity. Too many are simply of too poor a quality. Flag this | Edit this post |
