| Ok so the Wii has 4 main titles going for it: Mario, Metroid, Zelda and Party ( yes, i am putting all those titles like mario kart wii, smash bros. etc. together under a single game since they are so short, shallow and pointless unless you have a party going or something )
So what? What sells do not show you is the most important part of any console: THE GAMES. I guarantee that 15-20 years from now you will see the Wii as the number 1 on the list of "fads that died as fast as they came" And that is because the sales number do not represent gamers, they represent stupid tools and yuppies that bought it, play wii sports and maybe mario party a few times on a few gatherings then its back to collecting dust.
Nintendo its so pathetic they are even screwing up the DS since NOTHING good comes out for it, the gameboy advance at this point in its cycle already had a lot more going for it and at this rate, the next gen portables will be won by either a newer PSP or a Microsoft portable device, and you can't tell me im wrong because i am a frustrated DS owner now wishing I just bought a PSP instead since the only good thing about the DS is GBA games which are playable on the psp anyway.
The money on the console business is not on hardware sales, its on the games but Nintendo its too greedy and never does enough to encourage 3rd party devs since they want it all for themselves. Thats the reason why the most pathetic and failure prone piece of shit to ever be created, the 360, might come out on top because people are willing to put out with 4 or 5 repairs to play the games they wanna play.
That is the money making market right there, not a novelty device for yuppies like the Wii with no games whatsoever. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Hey as long as you are not going to have official support for XP why not move to Linux instead? I guarantee that is a lot more trouble free than many Vista installation specially if you use friendly, almost retard-proof distros like Ubuntu.
I thought I'd miss gaming 1 year ago but whatever Wine cannot run under Linux I can run on a 360 anyways. Let others struggle and update machines to 4gb ram, I can still run WoW with just 512 gb and my machine is faster than XP and more stable than even most windows servers. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | First its Sports on PC so nobody cares. But then they will say "No Bioware doesn't needs to release games for the PC" and so on and so on until nothing EA owns its on the pc, they are so big they can buy out all PC developers and keep em from making pc games. Flag this | Edit this post |

| He sure picked a crappy generic remake of a good game to defend, one that has tons of bugs that have nothing to do with any damn anti virus or fragmentation.
Piracy is as rampant for Consoles who are making a killing because of one thing: standardization. They are still lagging on control schemes, on originality on many things but if stupid pc developers like him keep blaming in it on the evils of piracy instead of figuring out their developing models are doomed to fail then im glad they are going out of business, im particularly glad Diablo-clone-bug-ridden games are going away if you ask me.
You can argue all you want its your god given right to extortion people out of money cause you are a developer, but rampant piracy is a symptom of a much more important disease: crappy games that don't work. Flag this | Edit this post |

| That its only true if the European Union backs off. If they keep getting on microsoft's case they could either end up outlawing Microsoft from Europe or forcing them to release compatibility options, both cases would actually help Linux a lot and you will always find Linux for free, so you wouldn't even need to keep paying microsoft at all.
What actually drives prices up is the fact that microsoft uses unfair and in many places, illegal business tactics to be the sole competitor leaving them free to charge whatever they want, however they want and as often as they want. Take a look at Vista, its pricing, the ridiculous new features, the numerous lock in options to force upgrade on you, etc.
THAT is the result of nobody putting a stop to Microsoft, that is the result of an unchecked monopoly that just keeps engulfing everything in its path. Im glad there's still more sensible places like Europe when they don't allow this and actually do something about it.
In the meantime I bet all people here defending the 3rd richest man in the world and his right to keep selling malfunctioning products illegally by forcing them on every new system, are of course Americans too. And of course you make it an "us vs them" ridiculous argument like a few posts bellow. Flag this | Edit this post |

| That is true nowadays but it wasn't like that a few years back. Prior to that dramatic differences in gameplay and content created the pc gaming market.
And its just a matter of time before consoles get the mmo thing right: they already got tons of console gamers hooked on bastardized FPS games.
As a side note, RTS will not take long to cross over to consoles: both the Wii and the DS already have addressed the control issues and the DS already has RTS attempts and inroads. The next generation all consoles will have the "wiimote" as an add on at the very least and in the meantime can you name at least 1 genre defining game on the PC on the last 2 or so years or in development?
And no, making a FPS with rpg elements or other mix and match approaches does not count. Flag this | Edit this post |

| First of all, the gaming PC rig is a bunch of bullshit: many over the counter PCs people own are 150-200 bucks away from gaming at equal or better visual quality than consoles and that is just the videocard.
Second, while Peter has a point if you look only at gross sales, if you look at "hardcore" gamers ( never liked the term, sounds like gamers that like porn ) you'll see that the PC is now dominated by console game ports.
So as far as gaming in general almost the entire market consists of the sims and WoW. The question is this: Is the reminding market for pc games gravitating towards console ports because of lack of developers interest or is the lack of developers interest dying down because of the preference to just console ports?
The way I see it pointing at just 2 big sellers might appear valid at first but its a cop out argument by Molyneux: I distinctly recall a seemingly endless list of pc game developers ditching the PC to enter the console business, can you really blame the few ones that are left when there are virtually no new exclusive titles coming out while problems of old like copy protection harassment, bugs and incompatibility, etc. are still present?
As a pc gamer I too have come to a point where I just said "fuck this already, im not paying monthly fee's and i am not playing stupid ports of war games, if I am pushed to consoles I will at least choose console games that are actually fun" Flag this | Edit this post |

| I think the Wii is such a waste right now. I was seriously considering getting a Wii but I find myself thinking "Ok so there's Mario, there's Metroid, Zelda, older Gamecube versions of those too....then?"
So I actually will look into a PS2 since to start its just a tad less powerful than the Wii and even if the controls are not as catchy I am really not seeing ANYTHING worth getting for the Wii for the entire first half of this year on their schedule.
Nintendo is even guilty of this on the DS too: their lead on the handhelds is nothing short of overwhelming right now and there are so many great games that have been released on Japan for months now and Nintendo doesn't seems to care that their 3rd party developers are just not willing to translate all of the sudden. Pick up the games and offer localization incentives damn it! Flag this | Edit this post |

| Once again the American Public is forced to embrace a product and not to make a decision, they are forced to basically beta test a technology that wasn't as developed like Betaray and forget about a more reliable and cheaper option like HD-DVD.
What kills me is that you trust capitalism when you wanna bash Cuba and Venezuela but you don't actually trust the public to make this decisions and shove blue ray down up their behind.

| Trade sanctions? For what? For having better and more logical Copyright Laws than the US? For having the crazy idea of a company having to prove actual profit loss to establish a crime?
That is the bottom line here: potential sales are NOT sales legally speaking on any rational country. Why? Because there are still many places on the civilized world that require a little something called PROOF to claims and showing a bunch of biased studies do not prove sales could have been made if it wasn't for downloads.
If we accept the US copyright laws then under the same logic and legal precedent we could establish that you don't need any actual physical or even circumstantial evidence to convict a man of murder like say, finding a dead body or parts of it or a witness that saw it or a murder weapon, only the opinion of a few experts and a few polls with your neighbors would be enough to convict you of murder because well, you could have committed the crime.
On sane countries we do not accept that as proof. We need actual money being involved, we need people paying actual money for copyrighted material before you can press charges for piracy. Because we don't allow corporations to create think tank organization to literally bribe congressmen into passing bullshit laws that make no sense.
But the US thinks they are in a position to threaten countries with Trade Sanctions which is completely laughable considering the European Union will be calling the shots at this rate and the US will have to either fabricate another war or give up and be surpassed.
Whats funny is that this tiny video game idiots think they have the balls to threaten the European Union with Trade Sanctions, its like an angry midget spitting directly upwards you know what will happen... Flag this | Edit this post |

| Read your post before hitting submit? You say "This has nothing to do with the console wars, in fact most traders don't even give two shits about which is the better console for games, just which one sells better."
When on the same post you say "They're just making a larger commotion with Nintendo because their stock is dropping despite continuing sales."
So Nintendo is selling infinitely better than anything Sony is making, specially "locally". And the market only cares about which one sells better, which is the Wii and the DS. Yet only Nintendo is being dropped and Sony isnt.
If a recession in the US is bad for everyone as you claim, it would be bad for Sony too, something either Firingsquad is so biased about its not reporting any drops from Sony or is simply not the reason why Nintendo its dropping despite being infinitely superior in sales.
Lastly just because your grammar suggest that you answered a question doesn't means you actually did: "They're just making a larger commotion with Nintendo because their stock is dropping despite continuing sales." The larger commotion is the reason why their sock drops despite continuing sales.
The drop is caused by the commotion, the commotion is NOT caused by the drop, so you got it backwards and basically failed to address the most important thing: the commotion which is completely unexplained as their success in sales completely negates any stupid fear of the console not selling while its rival who IS struggling 10x more times in sales seems immune.
This is actually just Sony making deals and spreading rummors to sink their main competitor. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Re: Metroid Prime Hunters.
Also: the NDS browser now officially uses the gba slot 2 to expand ram, this means normal games and/or third party developers could start using it too.
Even more so: Nintendo is developing a slot 1 ( normal Nintendo DS game size ) for download content able to use microsd and microsd hc cards expanding the memory capabilities up to 8 gigabytes ( As much as a full DVD double layer ). They are developing this surprisingly with a flashcard maker, M3.
So that expand ram up to 32, 64 even 128mb if needed, expands storage up to almost a double layered DVD. Already can play N64 games, with the added storage that means you can easily do things the size of FFIX including all the videos.
Its not as underpowered as assumed to be, plus developers will want to take part on making games for Japan's best selling console of all times. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I agree HD video is stupid, nobody has tvs ranging at over 200" which is what you need to really appreciate all the new resolution and detail. Hell nobody even has room on their place to fit monstrosities like that, hd is basically a scam: the human eye might be able to tell the difference on normal sized tvs but not by that much.
I love how people rave about the "experience" and other nonsense to justify the enormous sums of cash on technology that they still didn't really need. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Digital distribution can be as easy as using your remote control to change a channel: A mediacenter or a tivo type box can be used by pretty much anybody. What is the learning curve about pressing a button on a remote, selecting a movie, clicking buy then waiting for it to complete? If your grandma cannot decipher this impenetrable technology there are 2 options: she might either have health issues or she flat out doesn't wants to learn how out of stubbornness.
And no we should not buy into stupid formats like this two, crippled with DRM technology and pushed out of the door before they were ready just because your grandma can't operate a simple tv remote. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Well that could happen but is not the same game. Its the same implementation but each implementation has to be compiled ( and modified a little accordingly ) under the desired platform to obtain a usable binary. This is not a problem for Linux users since its easy to compile and install ( nowadays with deb based and rpm based distros, you can compile your own binary package so its easy to uninstall too ).
But it would be a good compromise for the developers cause they would have to invest maybe 1 or 2 extra months to release for 3 or 4 or 5 different platforms, which is way less than working across DirectX, opengl, whatever nintendo uses, etc. Flag this | Edit this post |

| You are wrong: the 360 and PC share 1 API which is DirectX. That means telling Nintendo to go fuck themselves, in fact it means telling anybody who is not Microsoft to go fuck themselves.
If you program for opengl however, its automatically just one implementation and easy to port over a wide arrange of platforms: the PS3, Windows PCs, Linux PCs, Mac OSX, etc. Basically it means anybody can make hardware to run opengl cause the specifications are open to anybody who wants to implement opengl on their hardware platform.
And that would be very good. Going with a propietary API like DirectX would basically do nothing to solve the issues unless Microsoft has a complete gaming hegemony. Flag this | Edit this post |
