| Kamus represents a large segment of the gaming population, but i say an equally large segment is just fed up with more and more horsepower and less and less content and gameplay.
In your example of the GT series, is the physics a change that affects the gameplay? Yes it is. Is it a significant change? That depends on who you ask.
So to present a different view from yours: No, it is not. Hate to break it to you but physics as we have seen so far on ANY gaming experience are nothing but hype and play a minor background role. This is NOT the dramatic gameplay experience many of us were expecting when we heard talk about physics. Why? Simply because the basic premise of the games ( run around in your car, shoot bad guys to death, etc ) is still exactly the same.
To me that is not a significant difference from just adding better graphics: is just adding more complexity to the same basic and simple premises. Im saying a significant segment of the gaming market is just FED UP with those same basic and simple premises.
No matter how many cosmetic and amplifying changes we have seen, we still have the same basic game we had years ago: You got your sports game, your racer, your FPS, etc. The best effords are adding more direct ( graphics ) and subtle ( physics ) elements to the same formula. We need to expand the game formula's themselves, not the way the same formula plays out.
If you look at development gameplay just hasnt developed as fast as all other sides. Look at how many years of plataformers you got before we got the "3d" gaming and switched it to FPS. In the past the technology simply wasnt there to move away from the plataformers. But now it is not only there to move to true 3d games, its there to go beyond and introduce new ways of playing.
This is why wii is getting so much atention, is the only company that is making the bet of "you know what, games look good enough, not lets make them truly different". That is a very important move that is more popular than expected. It is natural than Microsoft and Sony feel betrayed cause they perceive the consumers as the main responsibles for the technology race. The thing is that the technology race has been poorly focused.
The xbox didnt make money because of its timing, not because of its graphics, or even hype. They made money because their games were nothing like the stereotypically japanese-driven console market which had already overstretched the same tried and true formulas and wasnt really taking enough advantage of its hardware raw power: not because it was not taking advantage graphically but because it was not taking advantage in terms of different gameplay.
Now that M$ introduced their small but significant change to the types of games console gamers play they have secured themselves as an alternative with different games. So they dont really need to change their formula because they have the backing of the pc industry to deliver something different to the console market which was dominated largely by japanese games even on the american market.
How does Sony reacts? They just up their stakes with horsepower? I understand you and many fans like MG games alot, I understand the incredible following the Final Fantasy series has. But microsoft already won over a significant share of the american market with pc imported franchises like Halo which became a huge success virtually overnight compared to the time Japanese Franchises have been around which runs beyond 20 years in some cases.
So more horsepower isnt going to win Sony back all those consumers from the xbox360. Atempts to imitate "western" gaming wont help matters either simply because the 360 has a head start and a price advantage which is key to the western world. The cultural difference is key here: the western market is just not as willing to put down so much money for a console, the Japanese market is.
Then in comes Nintendo, which is ( imho succesfully ) capitalizying on the innovation side of things. Their weaker 3rd spot possition forces them to take this route. And the positive buzz the wii has inspite of its moronic name is more than proof that the innovation route IS a viable bussiness-model option to the technology race. That is what i think your main mistake is: asuming that the wii's horse power isnt enough for a true next gen experience.
There is a very significant sector of the gaming market that wants something new and innovative. Under that premise, Nintendo is betting that there is a significant portion of the market that doesnt just wants innovation as "new franchises and superficially different gamplay" the 360 and the PS3 offer with their physics. They are betting that the public will buy wii because it will offer a next generation gameplay. A TRUE next generation gameplay that is just not just more complexity added to the same basic premises, but new premises altogheter.
This is enough to ensure the wii will take a solid share if it delivers on its true innovative gameplay aspects ( which remains to be seen but their hype they are creating with their controller seems to work to convince people it will )
The technology race could potentially backfire at the PS3 since the 360 has gained credibility, along with the credibility the ps3 has lost with all things from unecessary blue ray to controversial pricing. Why? Because wii and 360 are both potentially securing large segments of the console industry.
Wii takes away a good portion that wants innovative new gameplay. The 360 and the ps3 are left to fight for the rest of the market that wants both innovation but without sacrificing their eyecandy and bragging rights of horsepower. But with Nintendo making waves and narrowing the share the 360 and the PS3 are fighting for the PS3 risk model is flying too close to the sun and it is starting to show signs of being burned early. | How is vista going to promote pc gaming? It only promotes his company which is on the market of selling new hardware, but its already the main reason why the xbox360 has been so succesfull: compromise between a console and a pc gaming experience without spending a good $1000 on a pc.
"Microsoft will launch Vista sometime in 2007, an operating system that will seed the ultimate entertainment experience platform. With Microsoft Vista, the entertainment experience will be elevated to a completely different level. At the same time with the right hardware, you can enjoy the most detailed, most intense gaming experience on a PC with many new games. Games are getting more detailed and with Ageia powered Physics, I see the future of PC gaming becoming more realistic and more interactive."
Now notice cause he doesnt mentions any specifics about why vista will be this ultimate gaming experience? Thats because it wont be: nothing its new, no new feature is necessary or even utilized by games, it just basically ties a gaming requirement ( dx10 ) inside a system with a bunch of other things games WILL NEVER USE forcing you to upgrade.
Which is why Microsoft in typical bordering illegal bussiness practices has either forced or buyed all other developers to force vista down our throats.
Somebody needs to tell him to shut the fuck up and just write about selling computers, vista will do nothing but hurt pc gaming. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | The reporter going up to the parents was complety unecessary and he was just fishing for an attack. I would have reacted the same damn way, doing a story on the library is one thing but what does the parents of some wanker have to do with the library? Nothing, he was just trying to get a reaction like that and he is lucky, if it was me i would have fucking shot the reporter right there. Flag this | Edit this post |
