| » This is interesting, especially from Sony Sony keeps talking about the need for BluRay discs to contain the massive 20 gig games that they have planned for the PS3. Just recently, Kaz told a journalist that Resistance: Fall of Man is coming in at 20 gigs. I think he is full of you know what. I am a PC gamer and many of my games are as pretty as anything on the PS3 (at least from preview shots) and none of them take up more than 5 CD-ROMs. I see a lot of HD FMV to fill up that kind of space. At any rate, take this one step further. Following Sony's ridiculous logic, won't the PS4 need 40 gig games? Imagine streaming a 40 gig game into your home? Holy you know what! | » Looks pretty cool Not a big sony fan, but the game looks pretty cool. Did any of you guys read the story about the Sony rep who claimed that this game is running in at 20 gigs. The game looks cool, but there is no way that the game is that big. I have Battlefield 2 and FEAR and neither one of them is a quarter of that size. Unless 17 gigs are full of FMV, then someone is lying. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Apple is using 5Mbps download to get 30 minute number That is absurd. How many people have that kind of connection? I have 1.5 Mbps DSL and I thought that was fast. New device for 07 looks cool. Sure does look like Home Media Center. Could it be that Apple is copying MS for once? Take away the black background and it looks the same as MCE. Wonder if it will only work with Macs? | » What is the resolution of the movie? A typical DVD holds about 2 hours of MPEG2 quality video. A single layer DVD holds 4.7 gigs of space. Can you imagine the download times for these movies at ITunes? I don't care what kind of internet service you have, 4.7 gigs is a lot to download. And if it is at a lower resolution, then the film won't look as good on sets bigger than an Ipod.
UPDATE: PC World says that the movies are 640x480, which is slightly lower than typical DVD resolution. Still pretty big files. Apple claims that you can download a full feature movie in 30 minutes using a broadband connection. What kind of broadband connection...a T1? Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Sony's real problem Sony's history is filled with attempts to make proprietary platforms that they control. Forget Betamax for a minute. There are many other examples of this. MiniDiscs, Memory Sticks, UMD's, and their ATRAC mp3-like compression format. Sony is completely fixated on these types of ownership rights - most likely because of the royalties in each format that could have gone to Sony. The problem is that proprietary systems are usually bad for consumers. Can you imagine, for a second, if the Sony Walkman only played a particular kind of Sony-branded cassette?
Sony needs to go back to simply making well made, attractive products. I was a huge Sony fan growing up and would have paid more for the Sony name. I blame most of Sony's current woes on the arrogance of the current control of Sony. I liked the company better before I head of Ken Kutaragi and his ridiculous comments.
There will defeinitely be a PS4 and I am sure it will be amazing. I only hope that Sony goes back to their roots and simply makes a console that plays great games and doesn't cost a fortune. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » I agree, sort of I agree that Apple will continue to move into the mobile phone business, but a nano sized phone sounds really dumb to me. Imagine the size of the buttons? Where the hell does the batter go? My wife has a Razr phone and it is really cool looking. The only problem is that its battery life sucks. I don't know all of the ins and outs of electronics, but my guess is that running a cell phone takes up a lot more energy than playing a MP3 track.
I don't think a Nano sized phone is in the works and I question how good it would be even if it would be released. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » I think you under estimate MS I know that MS has said that a 360 price cut is not coming, but don't believe it. MS smells blood and all the stops are out this time to hurt Sony and gain market share. MS is already losing money on every 360, so please don't tell me that they can't afford a cut. I am similarly unpersuaded by the idea that the 360 will sell regardless of a cut. MS has a very small window - probably today until mid-Spring to roll out as many 360's as it can.
The only thing that I would say is that a rebate is more likely than an outright discount. I expect a $50 price cut in both the core and deluxe versions. MS has to cut the core to $250 so they can legitmately say that the 360 is half the price of a PS3. That is a compelling selling point for parents to purchase a 360 over a PS3. I could see the Deluxe version also getting a $50 price cut and a bundled game - something that has been out for some time. This is all speculation.
MS is playing for keeps this time. You need to hurt Sony now. They won't be down forever. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » PSP, a foreshadowing of PS# woes? Before you call me names and attack me, let me admit that the PS3 looks to be a monster piece of hardware. I am not trying to bash Sony. That being said, the PSP's high ticket price was always sold to the consumers as a portable machine that does everything - a media hub, if you will. Movies, MP3's, and of course, an occasional game here and there. According to this article and many like it, the wide array of features has not been a sufficient jusitification for most consumers to swallow that big of a pricetag.
Anyone see what is coming?
The PS3 may suffer some of these same problems. The PS3 is being marketed by Sony as a media hub. It plays movies, music, oh, and it also plays games (but don't you dare call it a console - it is a computer, a "super" computer). Consumers are again being asked to overlook the extremely high $499 and $599 pricetag because of the PS3's loaded features. I think Sony is in for some big trouble here.
From what I read, the 360 is doing better than the Xbox did in the same amount of time, but I personally expected higher initial sales. Many fanboys claim that the 360's sale numbers are attributable to a "crappy" console and not enough good games. I think the problem is the price point at $399. Most "gamers" want the fully loaded console at $399 and I think that price point is too high for most people. MS needs to get it down to $299 and I think they can add some serious numbers to their arsenal.
I know that people are going to rip me for this, but consider how much more horsepower the PSP has over the DS. Despite that enhanced technology, the DS is killing the PS. Will the PS3 suffer a similar fate to the likes of the Wii and 360? Only time will tell. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Apple the innovator? I always hear about Apple being the innovator and MS is the immitator. How is a multi-button wireless mouse a newsworthy thing? If I am not mistaken, I could go to Best Buy, Cuircut City or CompUSA and see 20-30 different items that meet this description. Why is it "news" when Apple does it? This just go to show you that Apple is 75% marketing and only 25" product. Many people that "love" Apple really love the marketing. Ipod users need to be seen wearing the white headphones. The Ipod has become an accesory more than an electronic device. That is great marketing on Apple's part. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » It might makes sense At first this made no sense to me. Then I got to thinking about it. The 64 FX series aside, AMD's stronghold has been the basic processor. Their market gain share isn't attributable to the AMD 64 line, but rather their lower costs units. By acquiring ATI, AMD could fight back at Intel by offering a processor/mobo/graphics chipset combo that could be put in low cost PC's for the Best Buy/Circuit City/Wal-Mart crowd.
I have no proof this - just speculation. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Forget it...I read the press release Apple's press release states that they sold 12% more computers and 32% more Ipods than a year ago. Sounds pretty impressive. I wonder how that breaks down between their desktop and laptop lines. My mac friends won't buy the desktops yet because they are waiting for what Apple has up its sleeve. | » Does the profit come from the computer or Ipod division I am not attempting to bash Apple. I am a PC guy and have no use for such a machine. I built my machine from the ground up, so buying something that I simply need to turn on is not for me.
I want to know if the "soaring" profits come from the computer or Ipod divisions. Apple has been riding high for the past couple of years on Ipod profits. I realize that profits are up, but have they sold more apple computers, and if so, has their market share increased? For all we know, Apple sold 1.3 million apple computers last year during this same quarter. I know that their Ipod division owns the market, but has the computer division gained ground?
My guess is that their computer division is up, but not as much as they would like to advertise. Please post numbers if you have them on how many computers they sold in the past 5 quarters for a comparison. Thanks. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Get the facts straight First of all, neither of the PS3 models have an 80 gig drive. You could correctly point out that the $600 Ps3 has a 60 gig drive and the Premium 360 has only a 20 gig drive. Neither of these systems, however, have a 80 gig drive.
As for memory cards, why does it matter what kind of cards the machine takes? You aren't suggesting, are you, that Sony will let you back up games on a standard SD card, are you? You should know better than that. Personally, I have a PC and a printer with memory card ports. I don't need another machine to do this.
You mention that the PS3 has wireless, but the 360 doesn't. Again, you are comparing a $600 console to a potentially $300 one. I could buy a core 360 machine for $300 and buy a wireless adapter for $30-40 bucks. How am I saving money with the PS3? That is $340 against $600. Remember, the lower priced PS3 doesn’t have the wireless feature.
You have me on the bluray, but I've got news for you, I don't need one yet. Please tell me where the great bluray titles are. House of flying daggers...that is a keeper!!! I'm sure that title will sell on a 1:1 ration with the PS3. Right.
You also make the incredible claim that the PS3 will be "quiter." First of all, the correct spelling of thaw word is "quieter". Regardless of the spelling, where the hell are you getting this from? You Cell fanatics always boast about the main processor and the 7 SPE's. Don't you think that all of that processing power generates HEAT? Your CPU is huge, meaning that the silicon that it sits on is bigger in size and has more transistors than the 360's CPU. More transistors means more heat. More heat means more fans and cooling gear. Knowing you, you probably think that Sony is throwing in a free nitrogen liquid cooling system for your $600 console as well. I don't know which console will be hotter or "quieter" - but physics tells us that a good guess would be the PS3.
I also don't know why you assume that Sony is throwing in free rechargeable controllers. Where do you get this stuff? You are crazy and you are about to be tremendously disappointed when Sony actually releases this thing. Then, and only then, will you realize that Sony's newest console isn't the holy grail that you are making it out to be. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Sony's dumb 10 year plan Sony's PR people have been trying to put out the fires that were set with the announcement of the prices for the two PS3 units by noting that the PS3 was the console for the next 10 years. Ha! Are you trying to tell me that the Cell and the RSX are going to be able to compete with the new multi-core CPU's and graphics cards that will be released in the next 3 years?? Come on, Sony! PC's continual evole. I am not saying that one is better than the other, as that will change over time. Just don't tell me that the PS3 in five years is going to beat a PC - no way.
My guess is that the PS3 will be Sony's flagship console for five years, but will be sold for 10 years. This is similar to the PS2. My guess is that Sony will continue to make PS2's after they roll out the PS3's this XMas.
Bottom line...the PS3 is expensive. Don't try to justify it buy claiming that it will be powerful enough for 10 years. that is a BS argument that only a fanboy would accept.
Incidentally, before you attack me as a 360 fan, I don't own a 360. Similarly, the 360 won't match up to the PC's of tomorrow any better than the PS3 will. And don't talk about the disparity in prices for a console and a PC. I thought money didn't matter. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Your mindset scares me... So the majority is always right? Under your methodology the DS is better than the PSP. It sold more units and that is all that matters, right?
You are obviously too young to realize that the majority is not always right. Selling more units of something doesn't mean its better. It simply means that they sold moreof that item. Kia sells more cars than Jaguar. Does that mean that Kia makes a better car?
Sony needs to penetrate the market. Of course the fan boys will by the first couple of million units, but what happens after that? What middle class parent is going to shell out $500-600 for a console? Flag this | Edit this post |
