| The reason this feels wrong is simple. The people who pay for the upgrade cards aren't actually paying to upgrade only their machines. They are covering the cost of upgrading all of the machines, since I assume that price competition makes charging more for the initial system difficult.
So, you end up paying more for the upgrade then you otherwise would have because you're now locked in to the system you already purchased. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Anyone who has worked in corporate know that this is totally meaningless. Employees gripe internally with each other constantly. It's actually good for bonding ad sometimes even morale. If he said it to some reporter or external contact, that's different. Internal email to another employee? meaningless. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Why is there a question mark in the title? I mean, the movie IS in the works. We can't be sure it actually gets made, but the title implies that there are a few rumors but no real information or something. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Doesn't make a huge difference. Most of it will come down to a question of which fiscal year it falls into. If most of the ppl who couldn't buy Wiis this year buy them next year instead, Nintendo hasn't lost 1.3B at all. They've just lost that money in this years fiscal statements. | So, I take it from the first part of the article that you liked Transformers?
Then you go about talking about how great it is and how well put together it is, using its box office gross as the evidence. The same critics that said this movie wasn't very deep and didn't bring out real emotions are those who said the love story in Titanic was skin-deep and difficult to believe because they are correct in both cases. Using hormonal teenage girls as your counterevidence to the critics seems pretty sad. Millions of teenage girls loving your movie does NOT make it a great movie. Making loads of money does NOT make it a great movie. It simply means they packaged together something that the masses could enjoy. Passion of the Christ, for instance, tugged on peoples religious beliefs and made a lot of money too. NOT a good movie. It's marketing and its psychology. I have nothing against movie studios making money or taking advantage of people, but it is ludicrious to suggest that financial success alone makes a movie a great one. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Simply put, 640P is not HD. There's nothing they can say that changes that. However good the effects look, you can't replace simple resolution for a quality image. Think about how images look when you adjust quality settings and resolution. If your system can't handle everything at full, the best compromise is usually a mid-high resolution and mid-high settings. Both are equally important.
There will still be distinct jaggies at that resolution. Furthermore, the quality of the upscaler becomes very important. There are no native 640p tvs. Scaling 640P to a 720 or 768P tv will cause stretching of some original pixels. No way around it. Scaling to a 1080P tv will be better, but a lot of tvs don't actually do 1080p/60 anyway, so might end up with lower frames. Flag this | Edit this post |

| So, the price drop was effectively just a bullshit PR move. The real cost difference between the 60gb drive and the 80gb drive is probably $5-10 for Sony at the most.
They basically used the opportunity to sell a few more systems without really dropping the long-term price at all. Once again, PS3s are at 600 bucks and the consumer hasn't gotten much more for his money at all. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Well, it's tough to say. I've driven cars in India when I've visited, including other vehicles with 30-50 hp. You're forgetting how light those cars are compared with American cars. A Dodge truck is like 8 times the weight of this little Tatamobile. Even a Subaru is probably 2-3 times the weight. This car is made out of plastic. I've done 80mph in a 30hp car without too much trouble (i haven't driven this one though because its not quite out yet). Sure the shocks and acceleration will suck and it will look cheap as hell, but you'll be able to drive it around, including freeways without too much trouble. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Yeah, this really was a bit excessive on the gushing. One interesting point to me that is left out of a lot of reviews is that the BOM is about 250 bucks for this phone. A 140% markup on the initial purchase is a ripoff by any standard. Moreover, the 60/month guaranteed contract for two years adds up to a total of over 2k. At&t/Cingular is also very limited in many areas. The absolutely ridiculous analogy provided in the article of comparing the iphone to an Aston Martin is exactly what I mean when I say the gushing was excessive. Why is the analogy crappy? Because about 500 Aston Martins are sold in the US every year to people like George Clooney. Iphone's target market is a little different. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Knowingly releasing a product where you have downclock your own processor because your battery-life sucks. Wow. Wonder if the early testing units they sent to developers had the processor clocked at full speed. My guess is yes. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Games have to switch but they won't do so until people adopt the OS. It's going to be a while, in my opinion. Think about how long it was before games moved to DVD drives. Without a lot of tangible improvements for Vista, slightly poorer performance and less stable drivers, I can't see gamers switcing en masse for a while. I would guess that we'll see the majority of games will still be built with XP in mind through 2008. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Interesting to see if Mario Party 8 takes advantage of the Wii's controller. I mean, one of the issues was that a lot of the mini games were pertty buttom mashing intensive. The Wii controller could really make for a wide variety of mini games. In fact, Mario party is kind of a perfect game to take advantage of the system and appeal to their target market. Sales for this game could be telling in my opinion. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Good article, but it seemed like some of the issues were things everyone experiences and should know about.
For instance, don't use ECS motherboards that are bundled at Frys. Ask the guys at the store, almost all of those suckers fail and have to be returned. I've had systems of friends of mine die early due to ECS motherboards at least twice.
Second, memtest86 doesn't always catch faulty memory. Especially not when you have multiple modules in at a time. You have to test individually an usually for a day each. Even then, once in a while, I've had it not catch infrequent memory misfires.
I mean, a lot of the other issues was Visat related, but those are just two things you know. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | At the end of the day, there's a reason companies have targeted established gamers for years. Think about how many games your gamer friends own. They probably bought most of them when they just came out for 50-60 bucks. Over the long haul, a gamer who buys a XBOX360 and now has about 10-15 games and a whole bunch of accessories and cables is much more valuable than a mainstream person who buys a system and two games and loses interest. | | That 35mil sales figure is just for the US. That's a pretty crazy projection. That's sggesting about a 100mil consoles worldwide which is getting into PS2 territory. I'd say its optimistic. Projecting their current sales is really a bad move. Right now, they are seling everything they produce, so its hard to guage real demand. They probably figure they can sell whatever they make, which certainly won;t be true a few years from now. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I'm going to say this twice. With a good TV, for movies, there is no difference between 1080i and 1080p. Once again, there is no difference as long as the tv internal deinterlacer/converter is good. Not just due to the human eye but in terms of actual data. The conversion from 1080i to 1080p is lossless in both directions. The reason is simple, movies are recorded in 1080p/24. The standard 1080i format is 1080i/60. You can convert between those without loss. As long as your Tv does a good job of reserve telecining or deinterlacing, there is bsolutely no difference for movies. No BluRay or HDDVD disks have higher than 24frame for 1080p content.
Now, there is a difference for games etc. but few games do 1080p/30+ Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Now, obviously Wiis are still in short supply. Does anyone have evidence to suggest this discrepenacy might be due to more consistent PS3 supply instead of a waning of demand? Just curious? We are all assuming that this is because noone wants them but maybe its simply that supply is much more steady and people are less likely to buy game systems right after christmas. | | They won't cut the price until they can make the manufacturing process a little cheaper. Higher yields on processes do take some time. I on't think they can really afford to drop the price that muc more since people aren't buying that many games with the system. Flag this | Edit this post |

| This is just some idiot sueing for something stupid. Yes, there are some dumb local courts, but this will never get through anything. People in America sue over all sorts of dumb things for what a kid said to another kid in school or for Britney Spears being a bad influence. Dumb school boards and local boards pass some incredibly idiotic tings in the States too. Generally these things gets overturned immediately.
India has actually come a very long way since the caste system. A lot of movies have kissing scenes these days. Yes, people think that its too much, but that's just a more conservative society with regards to sex. They still go to watch it ;).
AND, they get most American movies anyway and generally uncut.
This is just some dumb ultra conservative trying to make a point. If you've seen Aishwrya Rai or Hrithik Roshan, you'd probably agree . . . having them kiss in movies is good for everyone. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Let me add to my previous post. I will not be buying a PS3. I haven't bought a PS2 or PS either. If anything, I'll buy a Wii, but the high def support (gaming not movie playing) is important to me so I might let that go too.
480p just looks kinda old school on a large high def lcd and I have a pretty good computer system. Flag this | Edit this post |
