I fail to understand why laws preventing sales of violent games to minors are unconstitutional. A T rated game shouldn't be sold to kids 12 and under unless a parent is present to buy it for him.

My parents pretty much bought me any game I wanted and I'd do the same for my kids once they reach a certain age (a 14-15 years old playing a M rated game isn't a big deal, really) but it should be the parents decision.

The day second hand games and heavily discounted games are gone is the day I go BACK to piracy.

Dumb douchebags.

You're missing the point.

He means, if 80% of handheld gamers are satisfied with games on their phones, will the remaining 20% of gamers be enough to sustain a viable handheld platform ?

I'm sure if you looked at the DS demographics, the majority of it couldn't care less about graphical ability as long as it good enough.

Brain Age and NintenDogs, two of the DS best selling titles who moved countless DS systems could work just as well on an iphone/blackberry/android/wp7.

IS that what the bulk of the handheld market is looking for ? Maybe.

Don't forget that people hanging here are "hardcore" gamers. We're definitely not more than 20% of the gaming market.

I disagree with that assesment.

The movie industry draws a good enough parallel.

Big movie studios cranking out soulless franchises with big names and great CG effects and indie "artists" film makers cranking out movies that win prizes.

Not to say that indie movies are bad but reason #1 why 90% of movies are made is to make money with the indies being sidelined into cult following territory (hardcore movie watchers).

See the alost exact same parralel with games ? That is exactly what is happening with the gaming industry : big budget rehashes and small innovative (sometimes) indie games with simpler graphics.

However, that's not to say some AAA titles can't be stellar. Every now and then an innovative AAA will still come out of the lot. For every 100 pirhana 3D and Avatar, there'll be one Kill Bill. For every 100 call of duty, there'll be one Mass Effect 1.

But the industry is still maturing into an actual industry so there'll be some growing pains. Gone are the days were almost all new titles innovated. Basic ideas have been, for the most part, all exploited. It's much harder to make something unique when you're the 10 000th doing something than the 3rd.

Seconded. I never pirate games (or any other software) anymore. I even got rid of all my pirated games and bought the ones I wanted to keep from my collection. Steam deals made that very easy.

But I agree that devs also need some teeth to enforce their intellectual property. If a gamer is good enough for me to play it, its good enough for me to buy it but DRM isn't the way to go (although CD keys are acceptable in my eyes).

There are enough good games released in a year for me to be able to wait until they get to the 20-30$ range before I buy them.

I want to get paid for my efforts so its only normal for me to do the same for others.

I see no reason for Kinect to be mutually exclusive with the use of a controller.

It's a camera tracking system so you definitely could still hold a controller while using Kinect.

A working control scheme will need to be ironed out regardless for Kinect, whether it uses a controller or not.

I could see a killzone kind of shooter work well with Kinect where duck and cover is central to the game as the gestures would be easy to emulate.

Voice commands could be used for changing weapons and the like anyway.

Am I the only one who actually read the press release ?

This only concerns a single IP created by Bungie just like Halo is still owned by Microsoft.

Bungie is still free to develop other games for other puslishers.

This is the way a developper should operate. Keep your independance but get funding for specific projects.

Isn't Natal also coming to the PC ?

That fact alone will make it interesting for developpers as you'll have a huge potential userbase.

It should also be good for the PC games as it means initial Natal games should be PC bound as well.

I hope it succeeds. I'm as hopeful of it as I was of the Wii but I see better potential for this. The first real step of virtual reality with actual user interaction beyond a controller.

It could certainly bring in a much needed breath of fresh air to gaming if executed on properly.

But somehow I see that breath of fresh air coming from small independant publishers on the PC ...

That doesn't even make any sens. In 2003, Intel was still far away from Core 2 and was still peddling the P4 against the Athlon XP.

This was AMD's golden era where they destroyed intel in every metric as well as price.

I think that its a good thing for the company if he's not there anymore!

has it already been 5 years already ?

Perhaps xbox 720 isnt too far away after all ...

I'm betting they test drive Natal for a year on the 360 and then come out with an improved version with the launch of the xbox 720 at that time. I can't say I see that much of a point graphically however. I just don't see the generational leap in graphic power the other consoles had happening anytime soon.

They actually should release one, along with Valhalla. Or at least a redesign if not a slim.

And make sure its RROD-proof.

That would help dispel some fear and give them a semi-clean slate to work from reliability-wise.

Probably would give them some repeat sales from hardcore fanboys too (although that number, just like for the PS3 slim, is debatable)

I've been using win7 RC1 for the last few days and its already a big improvement over Vista for the loading times alone.

It feels very similar to it apart from that except with fewer UAC nags, slimmer core and different taskbar.

It's not worth upgrading from Vista if you already have it but definately worth the switch fom XP.

As I understand it, you can do a clean install with an upgrade license but the installer will prompt you for your older version's key and (I think) CD.

That's how it used to be anyway. Haven't upgraded in a while with OEM versions.

I'd wager games require about as many artists as in a movie nowadays. With all the special effects going on and technical and cast, I'd think its pretty close.

But movies are 20$ or so on DVD (which is what I would compare games to since you "own" the game afterwards).

However, games contain many more hours of entertainment than movies. I'd be curious to see a bold company sell a AAA title for 20$ at launch and see the sales results. I think the current model would generate more revenue overall.

The port was actually an afterthought ... and it shows.

Eidos didn't even have access to the original material to make the PC game anymore, only the PSX data. That's why the backgrounds and music is so low res while the midi is so horrible.

There is no excuse for the numerous bugs which have never been completely fixed though.

But I do do agree it mostly wasn't Eidos's fault but Square's.

At first I thought this was way too much but the way they put it makes sense. Basically only 2 SKU's worth bothering about for 99% of people. Not like Vista were you had to have ultimate to set up a RDP or somesuch.

I literally never had an ECS fail on me. Ever.

And some of those are systems I built 7 years ago and are used as workstations (meaning every workday in the last 7 years, they've been running 8 hours a day).

They might have next to no features but my personal experience with them has been stellar.

On the other hand no single Asus board I've ever worked with has ever lasted beyond 3 years. That's crappy quality.

As far as my understanding goes its not that it uses an actual different language than common norms, its the fact that its architecture (multiple small weak cores along with one mid-end one instead of the closer to the norm approach of the 360 with 3 similar cores) that makes the PS3 so hard to code for.

I read an article a year or so ago talking about Sony forgetting the reason for its success with the first PSX. According to that article, Sony's PSX was successful because of the cd vs cartridge format, but mostly because of the low cost for the dev kits (meaning all 3rd parties could make games with minimum up-front costs - which is why the PSX was so 3rd party rich while the N64 was lacking) and because of the incredibly easy to work-with hardware (again leading to less cost and time to make games).

When you compare it to the PS3, the media format (blu-ray) is the most expensive of the 3 consoles, the dev kits were (and I believe still are) MUCH more expensive than the ones from MS and Nintendo and the Cell is, according to developpers, a nightmare to code for (lots of potential but really hard to use). That means all 3 reasons for their early success is now gone - in fact they did the exact same mistakes the Big N did with the N64. Hopefully it doesn't cripple the PS4 like the N64 did for Gamecube.

They were right to fire the PS head designer.

Right now it doesn't make sense to have digital distribution for movies except in a couple select areas because of ISP restrictions.

In all for a handful of places, if you stream 4-5 HD movies a month, you'll blow over your limit.

I don't see that changing from customer pressure on ISP for the next 4-5 years. And remote areas might never get there.

They wagered that the revenue from having a dominant format for 5 to 10 years would more than make up for the losses of one generation of PS sales. They probably overestimated the value of their brand although it has managed to keep them at a respectable amount of sales nonetheless.

In that regard, their bet was right as a whole for Sony because they'll be swimming in cash for the next decade just as Phillips has been for the last 10 years.

And they also are such a huge content provider that they can probably stretch their market dominance by a few years by delaying their release of their content on the next generation media/online streaming. Each time they sell a blue-ray Columbia movie it's a double dip. Gotta be great for the bottom line.

Smart business decision by Sony. Bad for gamers.
