| | I think AMD and NVIDIA are just getting better at keeping their stuff secret. That's really the only difference. Obviously they did a really bad job of this in the past (the specs for G80 and R600 were leaked well in advance of the actual launch), but they've now gotten better. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | As far as the games: yeah, the average game takes something like 2-3 years to develop. So obviously they're way behind the hardware cycle. I think games like Crysis though will REALLY push today's latest hardware. Cevat Yerli even said in his interview on nzone that they've got some features that they will turn on later in the game because its just too demanding for today's cards. Those guys are really pushing the tech it seems. They did the same thing with Far Cry as well of course. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Yeah, it definitely is disappearing. I don't think this is due to anything fundamentally changing though. IMO, NVIDIA just didn't feel the need to push the bar forward, instead it seems like they've been pretty content with the GeForce 8 line and you can't blame them all things considered. It sounds like AMD is going to have some competitve parts soon though so NVIDIA will have to respond, and the GPU war will heat up once again. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Again, due to NDAs I can't give you a firm answer. But you can look at history to figure this one out. Historically as you know there's the 6-month product cycle. NVIDIA is obviously overdue for their G80 refresh part. And towards the end of this year AMD will be knocking on the door of 6 months for R600. So yeah, based on that I think you can assume something will be coming soon. The clearance sale on R600 (i.e. Radeon 2900 Pro announcement) is further proof of that imo. | RE: X38: I can't comment on unannounced products, sorry. :( I think enthusiasts should wait until the dust settles in Nov before making a decision on that platform though.
RE: 2900 Pro: Yes, it looks like a very nice card, but as you saw yesterday it's a VERY limited release with just a handful of board partners. PowerColor tells me they're going to be producing a very limited run of cards, so it looks like this GPU is going to have a very short lifespan. I think when you couple this with the limited availability, prices will probably end up being a little higher than the estimated MSRP from yesterday. That's just a guess on my part though based on the past. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | LOL this is a loaded question! All I'll say is that competition is good for everyone, so obviously I don't want to see AMD go away. They MUST execute on their roadmap if they are going to have any chance of surviving. No more delays! Flag this | Edit this post |

| I should elaborate just a bit more on that also.
Don't wait for PCIe 2.0. Obviously we still aren't tapping the full potential of PCIe yet (just look at my X1950 Pro AGP vs PCIe benches for proof of that). Wait because we'll have new hardware before the end of this year that will drive prices on existing components down. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Okay fisherman Dan summoned me to answer your question.
IMO, the answer is going to depend on what your current setup is like, and if you're happy with its current performance. If you've got a decent rig now then yes, I would wait a few more months before upgrading. If you can't afford to wait though then you've got to do what you've got to do! Flag this | Edit this post |

| | froggz: The question is IF we get the Toshiba and Xbox 360. We'd like to include more players, but it's kind of impractical for us to go out and buy all of this stuff. And we can't use our own personal 360s because none of us on staff have a 360 w/HDMI, and we need HDMI to take the screenshots. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | In hindsight yeah, I should have cranked the settings all the way up. I selected the default "high" settings, and then cranked up the lighting to high and the shader level to ultra, but I should have gone further than that. I started out testing the 8800 GTS 320MB and worked my way up, next time I will probably go the other way around. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Hmm. Hellgate London would be my #2 and Unreal Tournament 2007 would be #3.
The only reason I say that is because I want to see GPU-based physics in Hellgate London, and PPU-based physics in UT 2007. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | We can extend this chat session for another hour if necessary. All I'm sitting up here doing is trying to figure out how to get BioShock DX9 to run with FRAPS and GeForce cards. The game crashes as soon as I click the button to start my FRAPS run. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Well, back when the whole AMD-ATI merger was announced, I predicted that NVIDIA would get into CPUs eventually. Out of stubborness I'll stick with that prediction. It's an awfully expensive marketplace to enter though, so if NVIDIA were to do it, they'd need a partner.
Sony/Toshiba and IBM would be the perfect partners for NVIDIA imo. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I'm hoping for good things, AMD and ATI have some really sweet products in the pipeline coming out in the next 3 months in the short term.
I'm still not convinced the merger was a good thing for the industry as a whole though. Back when the deal was announced I asked them why they just didn't take a stake in ATI, I still think that would have been the wiser strategy. The article is online here somewhere in the hardware section I think. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » DX10 On another note, I should also mention after all this BioShock madness is over I'm going to revisit Lost Planet DX10. Capcom has added several enhancements to the DX10 code with the latest patch and I've been told that not only is IQ up, so is performance. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I don't think it will. I think the reason there's so much doom and gloom right now is because the consoles are at the beginning of a new life cycle, but as time passes on the PC will just pull further away from consoles and the segment will grow as gaming in general grows. The PC market may not grow as quickly but it will always be there.
What does disappoint me a little though is hearing companies like id talking about dumbing down their idtech 5 engine for consoles. The old id wouldn't do something like that imo. Flag this | Edit this post |

| BTW: An update on BioShock testing. The 2900 XT is scaling TREMENDOUSLY under 32-bit now that I'm forcing DX9.
I'm still having problems getting FRAPS to work with the GeForce cards. Everytime I start FRAPS the game crashes. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Zane: The OS reports a lower figure but it does recognize all your RAM. I'm surprised Microsoft didn't fix this with Vista, WinXP had the same problem.
With so much system RAM, I doubt you'll see any benefit from Readyboost. You might as well take that 1GB flash drive and use it for conventional storage. Flag this | Edit this post |
