| | That's because 1080p wasn't ubiquitous until last year. So all the big screens sold in the past five years influence that 90%, but now that prices are cheaper and most TVs being sold are 1080p it will start to matter. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Yeah, what about all the early HD-DVD buyers, and all the $99 HD-DVD buyers that are stuck with 720P, most of them probably didn't even know what that meant. I'd rather have full 1080p than PIP anyway. It's not like I'm going to watch a whole movie again with director commentary in PIP, even if I watched with director comm. I wouldn't need to see his face the whole time, I'd rather be able to see the whole movie. PIP is dumb and most people won't even use it. 1080p is important to a lot of people though, that's what Blu-ray has always had over the majority of HD-DVD players sold (720p cheapies). | | My wife doesn't mind it at all, and she makes an awesome guitar goddess in Rock Band. How much junk do you want sitting underneath your TV anyway? At least the controllers are wireless now, before we were using the PS2 as our DVD player :O Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Not that much longer, and they were much more expensive. PS2's were many peoples entry into DVD video because they were only slightly more expensive than DVD players when they were released. That was how I justified my PS2 purchase back then. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | You don't need 200" TVs. You can see the difference between 800x600 and 1280x960 on your computer monitor, right? That's about the difference between DVD and Blu-ray, even though it's only a 19" screen. If you're sitting the recommended 1.5xScreenSize away (THX spec) you can see the difference. Sitting 12 feet away, looking at a 40 inch screen, you are correct, you would not be able to see the difference. Hint: if you can't afford a bigger screen, move the seats a little closer (to a degree, you know, don't take it overboard) you can probably get better spatial positioning on your rear surrounds if your couch isn't right up against the rear wall too. | | That's funny, I get the high quality rating even though I'm just picking up a wireless signal from a school building near my apartment. I used to sometimes get the Basic quality and I know what you mean, I wouldn't even bother to watch it. Then I picked up a little directional wi-fi antenna and get a solid High quality all the time now. The quality of movies they have for streaming is the problem for me. But I've mostly been watching Heroes. I was able to watch all of season 1 in November before I hit my streaming limit with Netflix, pretty kewl as just a free bonus. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Thanks FB,
Although I wouldn't buy one of those Blu-ray players for $269 considering you can get the 40GB PS3 for only $299. I haven't seen this deal mentioned here, but if you go to the SonyStyledotcom store and sign up for the Sony Visa, you get $100 off your first purchase over $299, so you get the 40GB for $299 or the 80GB for $399. Plus free shipping, plus 0% interest for 12 months. Heck of a deal, that's how I got my 80GB PS3.
But yeah, BR players have definitely fallen below the $400 mark. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I agree, people like buying those pretty box sets. Although I stopped buying DVDs a few years ago when I went to Netflix. I rarely watch the same movie more than once when there is so much new material to watch. I love being able to just stream movies from Netflix for free when I'm on the road though. | | I just got my PS3, I couldn't imagine spending $250 on just a drive instead. I think a lot of the capabilities of the PS3 aren't that well publicized. It's basically the HTPC everyone has wanted, plus a gaming system, ready to go for only $400. I can copy music from my PC across my wireless, pictures and movies too. Once they add the DVR capabilities, everything I would want in a media center PC is already there. The heck with a BR drive for my PC until they come down to $25 and games start shipping on that format. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | 50MB limit? I have Comcast, and I download gigs of stuff, with no change in speed. I wouldn't mind being limited to 600Mbps anyway, that's faster than anything else out there. Hmmm... That's 4 times faster than the new speeds they just announced. What are you trying to say anyway? Did you mean 600kbps? You know that's different from 600Mbps right? They do definitely limit upload speeds on torrents though. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Sorry, but p0rn is already switching over to BR also. Look for Pirates to be released on BR soon. Why do you think all those HD-DVD players have been on clearance the past few months. With this new Warner Brothers announcement and now Paramount, it's over. You're going to have to find a new losing battle to place the spin on now Yoshi. Hey, are you that Iraqi public relations officer who kept saying that Iraq was beating back the US, when our troops were already marching into Baghdad a few years ago. That would explain a lot. | They would be compensated by people going out and buying a GH3 controller, or even the whole game package, so they could use it with Rock Band. They DO make a profit off the sale of their controllers.
Now they will be compensated for their stupidity and greed, by me patiently waiting for the Rock Band guitar controller to go on sale separately, and by me boycotting GH games. It's not like I need them now that I have Rock Band, but if I had bought a controller for them already, I might have tried one of them out. Too bad for the greedy idiots @ Activision. | I was all set to get Rock Band on PS2, pre-ordered and all, but I knew we would eventually be getting a PS3. That drove me to order a PS3 today, because I figured we might want to download new songs, and if I was paying that much for a game I'd want to know it will work on the PS3.
My reason's for PS3 over 360?
Price: Only $399 for 80GB version (with Motorstorm) at SonyStyle store when you sign up for the Sony Visa ($100 off)
Versatility: I knew we would want to watch HD movies eventually, and the 360 + HD-DVD drive is much more expensive.
Networking: Came with wireless ethernet, that would be another $100 on a 360.
Backwards Compat: We have a big library of PS2 games, and my PS2 at 6 years old, is feeling it's age, that made it easier to justify. The games we have are on the compatible list.
Looking forward to Uncharted and Soul Calibur IV in the near future. And Rock Band! Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I believe you're right. This price already makes it the cheapest 1080p player. (Maybe there was a Black Friday special where a 1080p Toshiba player was cheaper, but currently, this would be the cheapest 1080p player) Place like Circuit City have the Toshiba HD-A30 for 299.99, so only the 720p HD-DVD players are less now. | "Well it's pretty clear that HD-DVD players are cheaper and are coming with a lot of great deals this holliday. Clearly they are the winner with the bugget minded middle class family."
Well it's pretty clear that a budget minded middle class family that was any good at math wouldn't be paying $300 just for a HD-DVD player, not when they could get a next-gen game system thrown in for only $100 more. Plus the $50 gift card they could use to buy any two movies they want or one game, that doesn't hurt either. I also doubt most budget minded middle class families would be willing to plunk down $300 on a high-def movie player that will be obsolete in a year anyway. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Price is a good argument for getting a PS3 over a 360. By the time you add-on the HD-DVD player for 179 and the wireless add-on for 100, it's way more than the PS3. The user-upgradable hard-drive is sure to save money in the future too, with the PS3. Yes, some people don't want to watch movies in hd on their hdtv, and some people want to run ethernet cables all over their house, but to people who value these features, the PS3 is cheaper. It's also nice to only need to have 1 player hooked up to your Tv, taking up space, etc... and be able to play your whole PS2 library of games. Oh, and you won't be stuck with an obsolete HD-DVD player in a year :) How's that for some other arguments, Yoshi? Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I didn't even know Spiderman 3 wasn't out yet. I figured it had been on DVD for month's. I think they just waited too long to release it till no-one really cared. Plus if those numbers are from last weekend, probably all of the 90k people who bought the $99 1080i HD-DVD players bought Transformers to go along with it. I would have. That probably did something to skew the numbers. Doesn't really matter to me though, I don't even have an HDTV yet... Flag this | Edit this post |
