| | Bummer, y'know after I had read like 10 of the WOT, and it was still dragging on, I thought to myself, this author better not die before this thing is finished. Hopefully if that last one comes out it gets wrapped up nice. Another author with a similar style, better IMO, is George R.R. Martin, check out his Song of Ice and Fire series. Tell ya what, that old coot better not die before he's done, or there'll be hell to pay :) Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Plenty at costco I just saw two pallets of them at my local costco in bundles that include Wii Sports(of course) Mario Party 8 and an extra controller for $319 (I think, not totally sure on the price, but pretty sure.) So I don't know about the shortages anymore. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Could be just because the biggest part of the game-buying demographic is 18-30 year old males, duh... Probably the only game categories that have big purchases from that demographic that aren't M-rated are sports sims, Madden, GT4, etc... Flag this | Edit this post |

| No actually, really, try reading.
"Meanwhile Toshiba's HD DVD player will remain in Target's website, just as the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on and HD DVD movies will stay in Target stores, they appear to have been rather unceremoniously dropped by smaller regional chain BJ's Wholesale Club, according to VideoBusiness."
See? There will be no standalone HD-DVD player for sale in Target stores, only on their website.
It's in the link that they got the story from, though I agree their headline and paraphrasing was misleading.
Oh, and I'm not a Blu-ray fanboi, I'm just a fan of reading. It does really seem like Engadget is trying to put a positive spin/mislead on the fact that there won't be any HD-DVD players for sale in Target stores. I wonder what their agenda is?
http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/07/27/target-isnt-blu-ray-exclusive-at-all-but-bjs-wholesale-might/
Oh, and the Blu-Ray aisle end-caps just means that the Blu-Ray players will have preferential product placement on the aisle endcaps. They're trying to spin that as if it was a bad thing too, but items usually have higher sales with endcap placement since people can see them without having to walk down the aisles. | | Did you read the article you linked? It says that Target will only sell HD-DVD players on it's website, none in store, except for the HD-DVD add-on for the X360. So, no, they will not still have standalone HD-DVD players in the stores. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | It is cool that Target isn't just foisting budget, cut-rate, but obsolete HD-DVD players on it's customers. They realize the format war is over, as any sensible person who looks at the sales numbers would see, and they've chosen not to sell expensive paperweights to their customers. Kudos to them. | | Well, I read a lot of not so positive comments about the public beta (which I didn't play) so hopefully this is a good thing. I read a lot of positive comments too, which makes it seem like it might be worth the wait. It will take a little longer to find out now though... Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Well, there was already no way I was going to pay $100 just for 20GB of disk space, and with the 50 or so PS2 games we have that the kids still like to play, having this as a replacement for the PS2 is a big factor. It's not like after shelling out $500 for the system that we'll be buying that many games right away (maybe 1 or 2 in the first few months). Probably most new content the unit would be seeing would be Blu-Ray movies from Netflix and otherwise the use would be getting to play those PS2 games on the big screen (another cost we would be getting at the same time). So yeah, this automatically makes the 80GB a no-go. Definitely a dealbreaker. Flag this | Edit this post |

| "(especially the Elite as $480 is simply FAR too close to a $499 PS3, better game library or not)."
Agree. Especially since the Elite doesn't even come with the HD-DVD drive, which is sort of the point of the HDMI port; so you can watch the protected content on HD-DVDs in full 1080p... Oh it doesn't come with wireless either (may or may not matter to you, but a lot of people have their cable/DSL modem by their computer, not by their tv, and who wants to run a cord across their living room, down the hall, etc...) So for equal systems, the 360 is now about ~$200-300 more than the PS3. Depending on whether you would be utilizing the wireless or not. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | 3-6x as much? The 1080p hd-dvd player goes for about $450, and I saw the Sony BR player at Costco for $450. Yes you can get the older 720p toshiba players for about $250. But if someone is dropping that much on a player already, and if they're really concerned about picture quality, don't you think they're going to just pony up for the 1080? Or wait...? Toshiba has a slight price advantage with their rebate because they are desperate, they just cut their sales forecast for the year in HALF! Sony would be smart to just drop their own damn price and end this war already, instead of trying to squeeze every bit they can from the early adopters. BR movies cost more too, but I would be getting them from Netflix, so no cost difference for me and the millions of other netflix subscribers. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | What's really funny is you have to imagine that most people buying one of these already have an Ipod, so they're not even getting any extra functionality out of it beyond a normal phone. You can't even buy songs directly from the phone, you have to hook it up to your computer every time you want to add a new song. Considering you can get phones with all the other features besides touchscreen for free at wirefly.com paying $600 is quite the ripoff. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I never bought a DVD player either. I got a PS2 the week they came out and never looked back. At that time, standalone DVD players were still pretty expensive. Since then, I've never seen a reason to buy a DVD player since the PS2 works so well. Some high-end DVD players might have a better picture quality that you could notice if you viewed them side-by-side, but on my SDTV that only has s-video inputs the PS2 looks fine. | | But it won't work for them. People buying now want DX10, the games are coming out in the next few months. Look at how many people are buying 8600GT/GTS cards even though they have lower performance than a 7900GS but cost $50 more. They're eating it up because those are DX10 compatible, even though those cards won't even have the horsepower to play real DX10 games when they come out. Nvida and ATI both need to step up their game and come out with some decent mainstream DX10 cards. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Thank you Blockbuster Yeah, I don't have either yet, but this is another sign that the war is over, and the sooner the better. Once a clear winner emerges, then people will be more willing to plunk down $400 for a player, and then prices will really start to drop. Most people are just avoiding it, because it's a lot of money to drop on something so uncertain. Even with the Toshiba 1080P HD-DVD players down to $500 now, it's still just too little, too late, to make up the lead that BR has from the PS3. Toshiba just cut their sales estimates in half last-week too. Hopefully they'll just stop production soon and start making BR players so the prices will come down to the mass-consumer level. | | Thanks, that Ricky guy gets a little too worked up if you know what I mean, doesn't do his research. Blu-ray players haven't even been out a year. They are ramping up faster than DVD did. Of course DVD is still outselling them. Cassettes outsold CDs when CDs first came out too... Of course it's a war, just because you're not participating doesn't mean it's not so.
