I'm more excited about Frontlines now than ET:QW. Can't wait to see reviews of both.

It's a port of the arcade version, not a port of the PSP. That's why it looks so good.

It's all in preparation for her new album, a tribute to Sinead O'Connor, covering all of her songs. It's expected to be a critical and commercial runaway success.

AMD/ATI isn't supposed to come out with their mid-range cards till April/May.

It would be nice if the article stated whether the 8600GT would be a 128 or 256 bit memory interface. There are conflicting reports in the rumor mills.

I think some of it is people hear about AOE3 and then realize they're computer can't run it, or they don't want to spend $40, so they figure the AOE2 is just as good for $20. Plus some people might think they should play through 2 first before 3. Who knows.

Reminds me of the quote "the masses are @sses"

Yeah, the deal or no deal is funny. A television gameshow that requires no skill at all, pure luck, turned into a videogame. The only thing that adds excitement for the real show is that they're winning real money (the girls don't hurt). A game of that is like playing a slot machine on your computer (and not through an online casino).

p0rn support doesn't matter now. It did for VHS/Betamax because there was nowhere else to get it. Now people just get it online, besides, as has been said already p0rn will also be on BR, just check out Vivid, they're doing both. HD-dvd is already dead.

I imagine a current marketable name would be their justification. I loved Descent also, but like almost all movie/tv licensed games, I expect this one to be a disapointment.

The article started to drag a little during the review, and lacked substance in that area; obviously you enjoy talking about yourself more than a USB drive. But when you were talking about yourself, brilliant.

"Never bet against the foot stomp." That and the sentences directly preceding it are the funniest and most enjoyable in the five of these blogs I've read so far. Great read.

Judging from the number of people who have voted on it so far (or lack thereof), you could have done a better job on the title. First impressions and all that.

"I don't think they have Bawls in Europe."

I had heard that, but I thought that only applied to the French? :D

Fun article by the way, a little immature, but how could you resist? Obviously I can't.

I think you're overestimating your own importance in the scheme of things. I would not hesitate to say that the number of people like you, buying PS3 or PSP for homebrew and Linux is FAR below 1% of PS3 purchasers.

People get their p*orn on the internet now. It's not at all like the VHS/Betamax days when there was no other way to get p*orn. The p*orn industry is releasing movies on BR already by the way too. Check out vivid's website, it's not like they're a small player in the p*orn industry either.

HD-dvds US installed base: ~35,000
BR US installed base: 200,000

You have a funny way of looking at numbers, kepone. Article states BR will have completely erased HD's lead in total sales within just one more month.

I think you need to re-read the article and consider the history. HD-DVD players had been outselling BR till mid-november when PS3 came out. At that point there were 30,000 HD-DVD players sold. Now you can buy a PS3 for the same price as an HD-DVD player and there are already 200,000 sold in the US alone. Read the article again yourself. BR was far behind because the only BR player available before november was $999. Now they are catching up so fast that they will overtake HD-Dvd's lead (which they had almost a year to build up) in total sales in just one more month. You must have been a sucker that bought a $200 brick add-on for your x360.

Of coures they'll keep buying movies. You think when people upgrade their format that they're just going to upgrade some must-have movies that they already have in their collection? From this point forward, those people who have bought BR movies will be buying all their movies in BR (excluding maybe titles for the kiddies, who needs Barney in BR). They might be more selective in the titles they buy, but did you keep buying VHS tapes once you had a dvd player? Even though VHS tapes were cheaper? No, of course not.

Just a simple question. Do you happen to have already purchased a hd-dvd player or the add-on for x360?

» Blu-Ray has now officially won.
You're trying to rationalize it, but there are now 10X more blu-ray players in homes in the US than there are HD-DVD players, and that's not going to change anytime soon. Most folks aren't willing to pony up the $500 for a standalone hd-dvd player (as much as the cheaper ps3 which would play games too) before the format war is decided, and I think most x360 owners are more interested in games than movies. So yes, they could spend $200 more just to watch hd-dvd movies, but I doubt many will, especially since MS has been adamant that the add-on drive will not be used for games. Plus no HDMI... and all the while those 200,000 PS3 users are going to keep buying BR movies, because must have t*itles are going to keep coming out, and now that they've seen movies in HD, they're not going to buy any more regular DVDs even though they cost less. They'll probably just be more selective with which movies they do buy. The difference between regular DVD and BR purchasing will be comparable to cassettes and CDs. Once people bought a CD player, it's not like they kept buying any of their music on cassette, they wanted anything new to be on the new, better, format. Even though new releases on cassettes were about $8 and new releases on CDs were about $15, almost twice as much. That is the most useful a*nalogy to use concerning dvd vs. BR I've seen, and I just came up with it. Freakin' genius. C'mon, you gotta give me some credit for that one.

To sum it up. Blu-ray has already won. The arguments that hd-dvd will win because the p*orn industry has chosen hd-dvd don't fly this time around. In the VHS/betamax wars there was no other outlet to get your p*orn (besides running actual films through a movie projector) so it had an impact. It's a totally different situation today. Most people just get their p*orn off the internet. So the p*orn industry choosing Hd-dvd will have negligible impact on the hd format wars. Most likely, many p*orn studios will switch over to BR during the next year, because they'd rather target the 10X larger installed user base of BR, since no one but extreme pervs are going to plunk down $500 for a hd-dvd player just to watch hi-def p*orn. So misused logical fallacies aside (wood pellets and air conditioners? nice "straw man") BR has won the HD format war, even though PS3 might lose the next-gen games war.

Dude, you're C2D is a newer processor than a 3800+, it wasn't even an X2 3800+. On a dual core you really shouldn't see any performance hit at all.

And as for testing on a 1.5Gz with 512Mb of RAM? It's not like that would even run today's games if it was running Windows 98. What are they going to test it with? Check the frame rates with Aero Glass while running Nancy Drew Adventures? Geesh, like someone else said this is home of the hardcore gamer (ARRRgggh, I'm hardcore. and a pirate :)

It's not the graphics, it's just the playing experience with a console is different. Something like Prince of Persia is better on a console than a PC. Same with a game like SSX. Plus I can play games on the console with my kids. There's a huge advantage to being able to play while we're all sitting on the couch. I wouldn't think of buying something like Battlefield 2 for the console, I play that on the PC. But I've gotten a lot of value out of my PS2, 5+ years.

And for the person who said how many more PCs are sold compared to the 70+ million PS2s out there. How many are capable of playing today's games. Most of the PCs sold are HP or Dell crap with intel integrated graphics, get serious. Ooh, there are 8 million Wow users without a life, but, duh... this is an article about consoles. Consoles and PC gaming are basically separate, although overlapping markets.

I for one will be buying a new video card before I consider buying a next-gen console. New video card in the next month, a next-gen console maybe next year when they have a better line-up and a price drop. And it just might be a PS3 by then, if games line-up improves. It will let the kids play our existing PS2 games which they enjoy without having too much crap hooked up to the TV... Consoles have their place, and they're not trying to compete directly against PC for most consumers.

I was just thinking that. I have my Athlon64, really needed to get it at the time, whoo-hoo 64 bit, big performance increase and all that... Every game in the benchmark slower in 64bit mode... 64 bit is still about as useful as a quad-core is at the moment.

I agree, even a choice like "I hope the PS3 doesn't totally die off, just to maintain competition and improve the console marketplace." would have been better then having all negative choices. You don't have to sugarcoat it, but then again you don't have to have a completely biased and useless poll.

Oh, and one comment on your last paragraph. It's not like Wii is even taking over the last-gen console market. the PS2 had more than twice as many sales in December than the Wii. 1.4 million(PS2) to 604,000 (Wii), which is also more than the X360 at 1.1 million. Note also that Sony is actually making money on each PS2 sale, so they're not going away anytime soon. Also expect to keep seeing all the great games released on PS2 for a while, and even some exclusives. Rogue Galaxy looks pretty good. God of War II? In fact the PS2 might be the PS3s (and the other nex-gen's) heaviest competition for a while. Who wants to spend more money to code for the PS3's 1 million possible sales, when they could code for the 70 million PS2 consoles out there. That's a lot more possible sales.

Sony needs good content for the PS3, then it might sell. What they really need is a price drop. It will probably take another year to see how it really comes out. Even if PS3 fails, Blu-ray could still come out on top too. Lot's of variables this time around. But yeah, PS3 and it's pathetic lineup isn't looking good so far.

They already said that the Aero interface is just suspended during 3D gaming in full screen mode, so there is no performance hit. I repeat NO performance hit. And they did test it on a lower end machine also... read the article.

A lot more interest in seeing reviews of the 8600 Ultra's when they come out. Would love to see a CPU scaling feature in that article too. At least some of the tests with one lower end CPU, like a AMD64 3400+ or something. I know, I know, it's still like 5 weeks out... Nice job on the article though.

Oh yeah, I'll definitely be sticking with XP for a while. The only reason I can see for upgrading to Vista is if you don't like having money in your pocket. At some point in the future I'm sure it will become necessary, but currently Vista only makes sense if you hate having money.
