| | You would think that on Steam they could just offer a build your own bundle, that would include some discount for folks like you nano. I don't have HL2 yet, so I'd like to get orange, but I'd also like to get TF2. I also don't necessarily want to wait for summer to get HL2, I'm just waiting till I upgrade my vid card so I can play it in its full glory, which will probably be around March, but this pricing structure might make me wait till summer to buy it (HL2, not waiting on the vid card till summer :) ... | | Y'know Best Buy had this for $24.99 on Friday and Saturday, and I thought of getting it, 'cause it seemed like a such a good price, then I thought "why?". The gameplay just doesn't interest me over and above BF2 + it's got the same long loading times, and it's own whole new crop of bugs? Who needs that. I hope ET:QW ends up being a good game when it comes out. Actually, EA just improving the god-forsaken loading times and fixing the red/blue nametag bug, and blocking cheats more effectively (ala Source's ban) would be enough to make me happy w/BF2 Flag this | Edit this post |

| | You're right, it will launch after Vista. Right now they're just trying to drive as many x360 sales as they can, and they don't want rumors of a pc version to compete with that. Did you notice how it was a "non-denial" denial. They didn't say it wasn't coming out, they said that the picture was not a confirmation. They just want to play it close to the vest right now. They'll probably rework it a bit to make it DX10 and add an extra level or two, then release it with Vista. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I'd have to agree, if people were dumb enough to spend $1200 on a PS3 and they're using it on a standard def tv, then they're probably dumb enough to buy BR movies for it. They're probably raving to their friends about how great the picture looks too. Actually, if you could afford $600+ for a PS3, there's a good chance you already have an HDTV. The format war isn't over yet, but I don't think Microsoft's add-on drive is going to make hd-dvd a winner. Toshiba beginning to offer 1080p in December at $999 isn't going to help make hd-dvd the winner either. The problem for the HD-DVD camp is if the hardware makers try to sell at a loss to push their format, they don't make back that money from content if they win, like Sony does. It's Sony having it's hand in the content pie that allows it to sell the PS3 at a loss. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Sony not at fault. Not at all. Not even a little bit. The guy was trying to steal the money. Even if there were twice as many available on launch day, people still would have been waiting in line to be first. None of the robberies appeared to be by people interested in getting a PS3 to play. They were all motivated by money, and their belief that the people standing in line would each have $600 cash in hand to buy one. Another good reason for using a credit card. If they had robbed me, they would have gotten about $3 cash and my visa card... no big deal. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Because the drive for $125 still requires a CPU, GPU, and RAM for decoding and processing the signal. It's easy to forget that. The question to ask is how can they charge $1000 for a standalone player, when you can get the PS3 that can do the same thing and games for only $600? Flag this | Edit this post |

| "The new black players are about half the size of the original players, which were introduced in April. Toshiba VP of marketing Jodi Sally, said the company has sold through 30,000 units of the first-gen players to consumers since launch."
Okay so Blu-ray base is as of yesterday, >6x larger than HD-DVD installed base.
Want 1080p on HD-DVD, then be prepared to pay $999 same as the Samsung player, and $400 more than a PS3 which will do the same thing + games.
"The HD-XA2 will debut in December and will output to 1080P, an upgrade from the current models that only go up to 1080i. The player also will get a price upgrade to $999, up from the current $799 on the first-gen HD-XA1. That’ll put the HD-XA2 closer in price to competing Blu-ray Disc players, which start at $999."

| The really funny one is this one:
"About 30 miles away, another shopper was beaten and robbed of his new PlayStation 3 just minutes after he bought it at a store in Manchester, police said.
The shopper told police five men surrounded and beat him as he left the Shoppes at Buckland Hills with the new PlayStation.
Police Sgt. Chris Davis said the attackers pushed one of their cohorts out of the car as they drove away. That man, a 17-year-old from Windsor, was charged with robbery, larceny, assault and breach of peace."
They pushed one of their own out of the car, like he's not going to narc on them after that. Shows just how freakin' idiotic and lacking of foresight the people are who do this kind of crap. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | It's sort of stupid not to sell it if you're not loaded. As long as you're not greedy (and stupid) and posting a starting price of $2000, you could get it sold the same day, and then have enough to get one next week, and a couple games, and a controller. Just for giving up "being the first one on the block". I could go without playing it for a week for an extra $600. Heck, if you search completed listings, they're going for about $1200 right now. So if you got one, you could sell it, just buy one next week, and it would be like you got it for free. Now buying one on ebay for $1200 just to play it a week or two earlier is just plain stupid. I think the people selling them just have more sense than money. Flag this | Edit this post |

| "After a fruitful career, VHS tapes started to retire from center stage in 2003 when DVDs became more popular for the first time."
Which is when the PS2 was released. That was my first and still my only DVD player. I couldn't bear to go back to VHS after that, only getting to see half the movie (half the lines of resolution), VHS just looked so crappy after that. Easier to remember where you stopped on a VHS tape though.
I think sony's banking a bit too hard on PS3 doing the same for Blu-ray, but it might just be enough for it to win vs. HD-dvd. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Why? It's not gonna sell more units than PS3. Add-ons always flop. So come next Tuesday Blu-ray will have about 40 times the installed user base of HD-DVD (2 million to 50,000), and pretty soon that HD-DVD add-on will be useless, because it won't play games, and there won't be many more movies coming out for it. I don't think Sony cares. Flag this | Edit this post |

| PS3 may or may not win the crown for next-gen systems. But HD-DVD is dead. They've only sold 25,000 units since april (as of september)
http://www.digitalhome.ca/content/view/1557/98/
and suddenly there will be 3 million blu-ray players in homes by year-end. Studios will support the installed user base. Yes, Microsoft will do the HD-DVD add-on for 360, but add-ons have always fared poorly and only people really interested in watching movies will buy it, since there is no gaming content for it. Ding-ding-ding and the winner is Blu-Ray!! Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Really, this is a loaded question. "FiringSquad: Neither of the PS3 consoles will ship with any HDMI cords to hook it up to a HDMI compatible HDTV. Since HDMI is one of the big selling points for the PS3, why was the decision made to make the consumer pay extra through a third party to fully use this feature?
Kimberly Otzman: Just to clarify, both configurations now have HDMI ports per our press announcement at TGS and we have not yet announced what accessories or cables will ship with the unit.
I suppose it they had announced it was shipping with HDMI cables, then they would be asking why you're making all consumers pay for expensive HDMI cables when likely only about 10% of customers will own a tv with HDMI ports. Why not charge a lower price instead? Besides, real afficiondos will just throw away the stock cables and want to upgrade to Monster Cables or similar anyway.
Perhaps the conversation could have gone that way. I just like playing devil's advocate, there's always another side to the story if you just change your standpoint. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Well unless you have really old stuff, upgrading really only helps your framerates if you play at 800x600, so NO. I'm not going to upgrade until my CPU is the bottleneck. Probably next year, and I'll see what's out then, AMD or intel whichever offers the best overall performance/$ since I'll likely have to upgrade RAM and everything. I'm S754 w/ an A64 3400+ oc@ 2.6, and I don't try to rip DVDs while I'm gaming... Videocard update will come first, and soon, I'm still 6600GT... Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Worth the upgrade? I know we have a lot of early adopters on here, or folks who just want to have the fastest systems, bar none, but looking at the results, would it really be worth an upgrade for GAMING? The only games benchmarks that showed signifigant improvement were the flight sim and some of the 800x600 numbers. The benchmarks pretty much just showed what we already know, that most games today are GPU
bound. It looks like if you had $500 to throw at an upgrade you would still be better off getting a new video card, than this processor, unless of course you're REALLY interested at playing games at 800x600 with the ABSOLUTELY fastest frame rates possible. 240 fps or so, that's pretty fast. I agree, the chips are fast, they blow away AMD. But once you crank the resolution to normal playing levels, there's almost no difference from about an AMD64 3400+ on up. Less then the difference between a 7600gt and a 7900gt, for example. What do you think? Flag this | Edit this post |
