| » The 8600GTS is garbage. NVidia cut too many stream processors and too much bus bandwidth from it. 32SP and 128-bit bus doesn't cut it when you can spend $30 more to get an 8800GTS 320MB and get three times the SPs and bus bandwidth (96SP, 384-bit bus). The card is shameful. They neutered it too much and it shows that the last gen mid-range cards like the 7900GT and 7950GT can outperform it in most tests, often by significant margins.
The 8600GTS is worth no more than $175. At $250 you can spend $25-30 more to get an 8800GTS which unquestionably outperforms all of the last-gen cards. There's no reason not to do that.
NVidia just handed the mid-range initiative to ATi. Now we'll see if ATi is competent enough to take advantage of that and come out with a superior mid-range product. If they can't even after being given this gift of an opportunity, they're hopeless. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Where did you buy the RAM you tested with? 2GB Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C3 is not available at any of the major reputable e-tailers like NewEgg, ZipZoomFly, ChiefValue, or MWave.
They either offer the C4/C5 variety or the C3 but Dominator which is overpriced like crazy.
I have been looking for the 2GB Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C3 unsuccessfully. :(
I want those nice low latencies while still getting a pair of 1GB DIMMs that are using the regular black XMS2 heatspreaders, not that crazy Dominator stuff that's way overpriced. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » all that heat... The XFX card will probably have a short lifespan and/or artifacting with all that heat it gives off packed into such a tiny space. passively-cooled high-end GPUs are rare because they give off a TON of heat which requires extra active cooling (fans) in the case, which defeats the only real purpose of a passively-cooled high-end GPU (quietness). So generally the only GPUs worth getting passive/silent are lower-end models that don't give off so much heat. =\ Flag this | Edit this post |

| » it needs to be said... I recently upgraded from an X800XL to a 7900GT. Fresh out of the box, the 7900GT on 91.33 drivers playing CS:Source's cs_assault mission was absolutely HORRID. Nearly every texture with lines in it shimmered unbelievably badly when moving my view around. I'd never experienced that with my X800XL and was shocked and uncertain how to remedy it. I turned up AA and AF to little avail. Finally I was told to try locking a LOD Bias clamp (the actual words vary but just put a check next to the item under Direct3D and OpenGL that talks about clamping LOD or LOD Bias. That fixed it almost completely. Then upping AA and AF again completely removed what was left.
So straight out of the box? NVidia's shimmering was atrocious, ATI's was non-extistant. After tweaking, NVidia's went away pretty much completely and the overall graphical quality was indeed 'sharper' and 'better', although certain colors are not as vibrant as they were with ATi.
So if you want an easier test for shimmering, load up cs_assault and walk around outside a bit. It's readily apparent and completely obvious without having to go out of your way to look for a specific spot of it somewhere. Flag this | Edit this post |
