| | I prefer PC over console, but I chose PS3 over XBox 360 if only for the simple fact that my PS3 is quiet and has plenty of room to install game files to the relatively cheap HDD. I basically own the 360 for game deals and exclusives on the platform. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Or they could just "cut" the price of the Playstation 3 and make up the difference in overpriced controllers, accessories, game license fees, and blu-ray sales?
Oh wait, this is Sony I'm talking about here and they don't think like normal folk. This coming from a guy (me) with a rather large PS, PS2, and PS3 game collection.
If Microsoft gets the hardware right next generation (HDMI, Blu-ray, and no more RROD problems), then I'll be jumping off the SS Sony in the future too. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Agreed, I had a black box coupon with my ATI 9800 XTX to get HL2 and CS:Source. The Orange Box was too good of a bargain to pass up when I found it for $25. Left 4 Dead was on sale for $25 and is awesome. Stalker was $5, so it was incredibly cheap to buy. With the exception of Stalker, all of those games have tons of MP replay value, and I don't care if I get to resell them.
FEAR 2 got passed over by me completely (I bought and played FEAR 1 through to the end) due to its Steam requirement. Bioshock, Titan Quest, Company of Heroes, etc. etc. etc. I purchased at retail for less than the asking price on Steam, and get this, I can resell any of those purchases if I care to.
IMHO, Steam is worse than most DRM schemes because it absolutely removes the 2nd hand market. Great for publishers if every single one got on the Steam ship, but awful for consumers. I would be bad for publishers and me if they all went with Steam exclusively though, because that's the day I'd quit buying PC games and start boycotting their console releases too. | Consoles are sold with slim or negative margins due to set production and R&D costs, so the cost of the system is highly set unless hardware costs can be controlled. On the other hand, games have a set R&D cost, but have a negligable production cost. Therefore, games can be sold at a lower price in higher volume and still make a profit overall (see Valve's recent pricing experiments). Whereas consoles can be sold at a lower price in higher volume, but will bleed money on every unit sold.
On a slightly related note, I feel no sympathy for game companies who complain about the used games market. Bring down the cost of your games over time, and you will handily eliminate the need for a 2nd hand market. Again, see Valve's recent pricing experiments. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Nail, meet hammer.
I'm in both groups. I wouldn't ever buy a AAA title if I couldn't resell it down the line, and there are several games I've purchased that I'd have never shelled out full price for. Used game sales do not equal lost new game sales. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | It should ship with a HD DVD drive. That way pirates can't make physical backups of their games (no HD DVD burners on the market), and the storage capacity goes from 8.5GB to 30GB max for 720 generation games. A HD DVD drive would also read DVD just fine for DVD playback and playing old games. Seems like a win-win situation to me. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Well, I would say nearly all people need a hard drive for games and an external memory card to backup their data periodically. WiFi connectivity and Online gaming are important to most gamers.
Also, I realize you can get a $20 20GB HDD for your Arcade version now, but I highly doubt 20GB will be enough for more than 5-8 games (many games have 2GB+ installs associated with them and 8GB is dedicated to the embedded OS).
So, if you only plan to own 5-8 games at any one time, not use any Online features of the console or have your router near your 360 for wired Ethernet (and $50/year for Online matchmaking if you decide to go Online), and don't care about Blu-ray; then yes, the Arcade 360 unit is perfect for you. Congrats on having the bare minimum requirements for next-gen gaming and saving $180, which will get you 3 good games for your new system (only 2-5 left before you're buying a $140 HDD though), provided you never take it Online. | The truly wise will get the free 512MB memory card, eBay it, and use the proceeds for the 20GB HDD.
Edit: I just realized it's an either or situation. The 20GB HDD for $19.99 is by far and away the better deal. Flag this | Edit this post |

| To be fair, the $499 version gets you PS2 backwards compatibility and a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4, which is $59.99 at retail.
Also, I think the demographics are shifting to older and older people who are savvy about their purchases. I'm in that 30 year old with a HDTV demographic.
P.S. I'm pretty confident Gears of War 2 and Halo 3 will make their way to the PC if history can give me any insight. I have yet to see a Sony exclusive make it to the PC however. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Then you can save $100 or $60 by getting a 360 Premium with a 60GB hard drive or an Arcade version for $199.99 + $139.99 for a 120GB hard drive (the wireless headset and black plastic cost $60 extra for the Elite model?). Flag this | Edit this post |

| 360 - $139.99 for 120GB hard drive.
PS3 - User upgradeable with standard SATA laptop drives and every unit has at least a 40GB drive.
360 - $99.99 for wireless.
PS3 - Included.
360 - 30%+ RROD
PS3 - Normal failure rates.
360 - $49.99, 512MB proprietary memory card.
PS3 - $10, 4GB USB thumb drive FTW.
360 - We play DVDs and HD DVDs for $50 extra (used to be $129.99, but went the way of the dodo so we dropped the price).
PS3 - We play DVDs and Blu-Rays, which won the format war and can be rented at Blockbuster.
360 - We're priced starting at $199.99 (although you don't get wireless or a hard drive, which really means we start our pricing at $299.99 because you'd be an idiot to get the $199.99 Arcade model).
PS3 - $399.99, comes with wireless and we throw in an 80GB hard drive to get you started. Did we mention it plays Blu-ray out of the box and is firmware upgradeable, making it the most future proof player out there? We'd be happy to sell you a base model Blu-ray player for $249.99, which we'll actually turn a profit on, if you don't want to play our games. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Time to think about flashing the non-SLI board with the SLI board version's BIOS? My question is, why has there been no class action suit if it's just a driver issue? Seems like unfair locking in of consumers to nVidia chipset motherboards to me. Flag this | Edit this post |
