| ROFL if you're paying tuition I can pretty much guaranty one night of partying will cost you 3 times as much as a month of wow. Just Drink less, wow more!
$15 a month is nothing for those of us that spend a bare minimum of 40 hours per week playing WOW. Flag this | Edit this post |

| The "Grind" to level 70 is not an accomplishment. If I could I would have started playing the game at level 70.
PVP is all that matters. I want to slaughter people in arenas and Battlegrounds and in order to do that you must be level 70. Flag this | Edit this post |

| "Come one, any noob-level BF2 game is involving loads more of strategy and tactics than the most high-end of WoW combats.
You need to take a break of a couple months, then you'll realize the futility of it all."
From August to December of 2006 I stopped playing WOW. I played BF2 and CS:S every day. The fact is that neither of those games have nearly enough mature Microphone using co operative players to get much done as a Team. The same can not be said of WOW, at least not in my guild where everyone is 20 years old plus and all we do is Battlegrounds and Arenas. Teamwork and strategy are more crucial in WOW than ever before, level 70 Arenas that pit 2v2, 3v3 and 5v5 may as well be first person shooters. They play the same way!
ASDF you sound like another person that played WoW through PVE dungeons and think that is all there is to it. WOW PVP is a totally different experience and until your in an organised PVP ONLY GUILD you wont see the light. Flag this | Edit this post |

| RE SFTHEWOLF: If I was running dungeons and dropping dragons then I'd agree with everything you just said but PVP isn't about that.
I play World of Warcraft exactly like I play First Person Shooters. PVP in the Arenas is about fighting the best of the best. In the 2v2 arena bracket my team Warrior/Warlock/Priest beat some of the best players in our battlegroup. Arena combat is no more repetitive than playing CS:Source or Battlefield 2. Gear is obviously an asset which is why I highlighted what I have achieved so far.
I enjoy the PVP in WOW because it is a strategic experience. In fact I would argue that 15 vs 15 man Arathi basin is a more competitive organised experience than I've ever had in Battlefield 2.
Comments like "Most people I talk to about that game don't sound like they even enjoy it, they just feel compelled to play it and become a better epic-vanquishing-uberpaladinsorceror than everyone else" come primarily from people that PVE. They grind through dungeons, get their gear and then quit.
WOW PVPers are just like you FPS addicts. We keep fighting and kicking ass because it's exciting and incredibly challenging. The gear is just a necessary evil. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » WOW: Burning Crusade will end your marriage. I'm a Level 70 Warlord (Rank 13 in PVP) Warlock.
After hitting level 70 I started running battlegrounds daily. I have 5 level 70 epic Generals PVP gear pieces. I am trying to become an Arena "Gladiator". If you achieve gladiator status this season you win a free epic flying mount (Nether Drake) and of course the Galdiator PVP gear is incredible.
PVP is everything. World of Warcraft is the best game ever made. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I have owned an Geforce 8800GTX since release. It was an upgrade from an AGP ATI X800XL. Both video cards were installed in the same Asrock939 Dual-Sata2 [The only motherboard with native support for AGP 8x and PCIE 16x]. This is a $70 motherboard and with an 8800GTX I have doubled my framerates in all games at 1920x1080 res.
Thank you Firing Squad for using an 8800GTX for this article. I'll be ordering a P5B DLX, Scythe Infinite and a Core 2 E4300 any day now. I have been trying to reach a 200% overclock for 5 years. This CPU is the Holy Grail of overclocking and it's making it impossible for me to keep buying AMD chips. Flag this | Edit this post |

| STOP TALKING ABOUT RAIDING F'ING DUNGEONS!
WOW is all about one thing: PVP.
Battlegrounds are awesome. BC adds the Arenas, another BG and most importantly a lot more World PVP combat. The PVP is what makes it the best MMO ever made. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Another WOW article that totally misses the focus of Burning Crusade. One of the prime goals of BC was to enable a more dynamic well thought out PVP experience. PVE and grinding through dungeons got boring for most MMO gamers ages ago. A huge number of us play wow strictly for the excellent battleground PVP combat.
In Burning Crusade they are adding tons of new World PVP objectives, a new battle ground and the Arena PVP system. Each one of these feature is critical to making wow the best game ever made and the author of this article didnt even mention them.
PVE is for saps. Flag this | Edit this post |

| 10% of the market has 1080P? ROFL!
Maybe 1% of the North American market has a 1080P capable TV. If you look at the global gaming market (About 150 million gamers) I would bet that less than 1% of them have a 1080P set. I'd bet maybe 10% have a 720P set. The rest are still using traditional CRTs and that is yet another reason why Wii will be a success. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Just to quell this rumor before it starts....
HDDVD natively supports 1080P. Early generation HD-dvd players could not render properly at 1080P but this is not the fault of the HD dvd format. Even the Xbox 360 can now do 1080P HDdvd through the VGA connector as of december 2006. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Jcal I think you took that out of context.
"We don't want to charge customers $200 extra for something that may be the next Betamax."
The person that said this is obviously thinking the same thing as everyone else... That either of these new HD formats could go the way of the Betamax. Right now HD DVD has higher sales but Blueray has a lot of momentum. Personally I'd rather the winner be which ever one is cheaper and right now that is HD-DVD.
Its just a good thing that LG is releasing a player that can do both formats. That way I cana buy the cheaper disks (HD-DVD) and not worry about the future.
It seems to me you are a big fan of the PS3 and Sonys Blueray format. To me it just looks like Sony is trying to force gamers into the HD market before they are ready and I'm certain that it will hurt their market share. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Single Player Summary:
Jacob the real question is how can ANY single player FPS keep anyones attention for more than 20 hours?
Farcry kept me going for about 15, got bored and quit.
Doom 3 kept me going for 8 hours, got bored and quit. Every single room had 2-3 monsters and *gasp* a secret door behind you revealing another monster. (The flash light is the only original thing in that whole POS game)
Fear: The game is about as deep as a kiddy pool. 10 hours and quit.
Half Life 2: At least they tried to make it interesting but frankly the linear game play and rudimentary problem solving got boring after 15 hours of play.
Multiplayer Summary:
Counterstrike and CS Source: Each of these games has given me thousands of hours of entertainment. I wouldnt be surprised if I spent 2 months of real time in a single year playing the original CS
Battlefield Series: Despite being made by EA these games created a whole new sub-genre of vehical based PFS. BF2 is responsible for a huge number of new flight sim fans. The Jets are monstrously powerful and incredibly fun providing you have a joystick.
World of Warcraft PVP: While wow is considered an MMO I always argue that the Battleground PVP is closer to an FPS than an mmo. There are piles of pure PVP guilds out there, its not just boring dragon killing against non-human opponents.
Multiplayer is everything. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Burning Crusade #1 As much as I am looking forward to Crysis (I have a Geforce 8800GTX, Vista and a 42inch 1080P LCD) I still think WOW: Burning Crusade should be number one on the charts. I can pretty much guarantee that it will outsell every other game this year. Jcal obviously hasn't read much about WOW: BC or played the Beta. The game is not "more of the same", in fact the focus on the expansion is PVP first and raiding second. Every major "zone" in BC features "world PVP content" that many players have missed. Also a new Battleground has been announced which looks totally different from prior BGs. There is one city in BC that allows both factions to seige over it. Which ever faction controls this city will be able to access quests that are unavailable to the other side. The seiging of the city will partially be done by blanket bombing from flying mounts. These will be accessable from control towers. This whole city pvp concept is completely new to WOW.
Crysis on the other hand has very little in the way of new gameplay. Its an FPS and from what we have seen so far it lacks the kind of forward thinking multiplayer that will be available in ET: Quake Wars. I love the graphics in Crysis but if it doesnt have a solid, well thought out multiplayer focus it will only really be fun for maybe 50 hours of game play. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I love consoles as much as the next guy but World of Warcraft is the best game I've ever played. I started playing 15 months ago and my /played time is 65 days of real time. Thats 1560 hours of gameplay on a single title. Final Fantasy 9 gave me around 300 hours of play and Final Fantasy 7 was around 200 hours.
Next year I'm going to be playing ET:Quake Wars, Crysis, and WOW: Burning Crusade. I'm done with RTS games until Blizzard makes another one. I still play DOTA mod Warcraft 3 every day.
Console wise, I'll buy a 360 when Halo 3 comes out (Just for multiplayer coop with a friend) and I'll buy a Wii as soon as I can find one. Old mario games, link, zelda, metroid and hopefully Contra will all be available online eventually. If your under 18 years old please dont reply to this post. | » wrong PC gaming is far from dead. I agree with some of your comments on the price of PC gaming but the fact is you don't need a super PC to play WOW. World of Warcraft is probably the most succesful game (Other than the sims) in the last two years (financially). Blizzard is close to 8 million active subscribers and I bet you anything that the Burning Crusade will be the most succesful "expansion pack" ever released on any system.
WOW is for everyone, not just power gamers. My clutch blew on my car yesterday and the toe truck driver that picked me up told me he almost turned down my call because he has wow on his notebook in his truck. He told me he just bought himself a new PC JUST TO PLAY WOW. The reason that PC game sales are down is simple: Nothing half as fun as WOW has come out yet. (Yes I play FPS games too)
Until consoles have keyboards and mice shipped with them I cant see them ever replacing PC gaming. We don't even need to start the graphics comparisons. Most hard core gamers I know care about one thing: Multiplayer gaming.
The best games I've ever played all have heavy multiplayer features, whether they be on consoles like the nintendo 64 (4 player native support!) or the PC.
WII was totally underestimated in this article. You only need to look at the sales of the DS to see where I am coming from. I am one of the 1% of north americans that actually owns a 1080P capable TV and I'm not buying a PS3 or 360.I'm buying a WII and I'm a buying the XBox360 HDDVD player for my pc (The TV is my primary computer monitor). I know a dozen non gamers that have bought a Wii and play it constantly. Its not a marriage ender like WOW but its earning itself a whole new market. The controller is truly innovative. The partys I went to over x-mas/new years had groups of hot chicks playing Wii while downing beers. Hottest thing I've ever seen. My buddies 360 was under his bed.
Between PS3 and 360 I lean towards the 360 for the better multiplayer experience via Live and the fact that HD-DVD is optional. The fact that there are two competing standards that are heavily backed on either side does nothing to help either platform. It's going to scare away the bulk of the market which will hurt the PS3 more than the 360.
EDIT: PS3 User replaceable hard drives and Linux support are not going to draw traditional gamers or even power gamers. I haven't seen a single good looking Ps3 game other than Gears of war and its available on 360 and looks just as good if not better. Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Single Player Gaming Sucks. I only play online multiplayer games. BF2 and CS Source are great games. After 3 years I'm burned out on CS. BF2 is great now that I have a Joystick. Destroying absolutely everything in a jet is fun for me but its torture for the people on the ground. In BF2 jets are flying fortresses. I hate EA though for the lack of widescreen support in their games.
NON-FPS I play Warcraft 3 DOTA mod and World of Warcraft (I'm a Warlord Warlock in PVP which is almost like an FPS at level 60)
Next year is going to be huge for Dirext X 10 FPS games:
1. QuakeWars: ET
2. Crysis
3. World in Conflict

| Wow you're uneducated on LCD TVs...
"It supports too less resolutions. There´s nothing between 1024 x 768 and 1920 x 1200. So you can play either actual games with a slide show @1920 if your GPU is outdated (which it is fast enough nowadays) or @1024 which I presume is worsly interpolated with ugly artifacts."
My westy 42 supports any resolution that my old Dell had it just scales the picture (Like any other LCD). Of course with my EVGA 8800 GTX I play everything at 1920x1080 @60hz with 8xAA and 8xAF (A lot of games I can play with 16xAF and 16xAA). There is absolutely no ghosting and it does have an 8ms Gray to gray. It has been my primary computer monitor for 5 weeks now and it just gets better and better.
P.S. BF2, CS:S and Lost Coast all run over 100FPS all the time at 1080P (1920x1080)with 8xAF/AA. Forget small monitors.... Buy a monster video card and play Crysis in January on a 42"! Flag this | Edit this post |

| Westinghouse 42" 1080p Monitor (LVM-42w2)
It's actually a monitor (It doesn't overscan the picture. 1920x1080 60hz refresh 8ms response rate. It has 6 connections that support 1080P natively. 2 DVI, 1 HDMI, 1VGA, 2 Component, 1 Svideo and 1 Composite.
I'm buying an 8800GTX for my 1080P monitor as soon as it comes out. I sit 7 feet away from my computer monitor. It kicks the hell out of my "old" Dell 2405.
