I'd say the stories are in the proper order. The Big N's return to a gaming superpower is certainly the biggest game-related story of the year.

I'm sure that's the spin they're putting on it but calling it something different doesn't change what it really is. The 4th core doesn't meet the standards of the other 3 cores is what it boils down to regardless if the purpose is overclocking or just running the entire package at a higher clock speed for retail. I'm sure in a Quad Core setup it's fairly common for one core to be below par and therefore this gives them the option of selling a three core, higher clocked for more money rather than scrapping the entire package or selling a 4 core at a lower clock. Either way it's all about improving return in manufacturing.

hehe It's just AMD trying to get more efficient yields from Phenom manufacturing. Rather than having to scrap an entire cpu due to one failed core, they sell it as a triple with the core not up to standards remains off. Programming wise it would have absolutely no impact as others have said. (And if it does... I dunno what the devs were thinkin)

If what you say is true, and judging from your grammar I really have no doubt that it is, than I truely feel sorry for you. To tell me that you didn't want to see a movie beacause "it was based off a book" is one of the most insanely ignorant comments I've read on these boards. Congratulations on taking it from Soldier36 who normally dwarfs anyone else in stupidity.

Did I say the movies were bad? I enjoyed them a great deal as I took them for what they were, entertainment. I agree that you couldn't have made better movies from the books, but you are dead wrong if you think Peter Jackson had some huge impact on Tolkein's work. There is NO other fictional work that has entire scholars dedicated to it, and I'm not making that up. There are several Universities with whole degrees related to the works of Tolkein. It is the number 2 best selling book OF ALL TIME next to the Bible. It was that way before the movies and it still is.

The books dwarf the movies. Why? When you play a game you like a lot of details in textures and things of that nature, to make the world feel more alive right? That's what Tolkein did in his books only he did them with words. He was able to describe a living, breathing world in such detail that Peter Jackson was able to take that information and translate it into the big screen in a way that, at least visually, was VERY close to the way a great number of people imagined. Most book to movie translations can't do that because the level of detail by the author is almost never that good.

Also, Tolkein wrote ALL the languages for the different races and there are so many backstories, and even a Bible of sorts pertaining to Middle Earth that he wrote, creating a far more believable world than any fantasy writer before or after him.

Can't they lie to us at least and start the patches with 1.1 rather than .5? I mean, numbering them .5 really makes it seem like the game shouldn't even be out yet. Although most agree it probably shouldn't be, at least the dev should pretend like it should.

I agree, one movie should cover the Hobbit easily. Unless of course they are looking at making some of the additional work of Tolkein, the back stories and what not, into the second movie. I could see that being pretty good, but splitting The Hobbit into two movies just flat wouldn't make any sense.

You give Peter Jackson FAR too much credit. Yes, the movies are great but they pale in comparison to the books. We're talking about a series of books that is the second best selling books in the world next to the Bible. Peter Jackson had nothing to do with that, LotR was far more mainstream than most know. Those who have only watched the movies and not enjoyed the books as one should are missing out.

At least a driver can handle 3 cards without the dev having to do a whole lot. Really wish they'd do the same for multi-core cpus, that would really make the transition to a quad core worthwhile.

Number 2 is basically what LotRO followed and, for what it offers, is a great game. Not really geared towards jaded, hardcore MMO vets like myself but I still got quite a while of enjoyment out of it. But they handled the beta and launch flawlessly, especially compared to any other MMO. From a technical perspective, client stability and server stability, the game was ready to launch easily 6 months before release. The extra time was a great idea and the right move. Most publishers don't like to let the devs have that sort of time so it gets rushed out with a "sell now, fix later" mentality that is really starting to affect the entire industry, not just MMOs.

Love or hate lotro, they wrote an excellent blueprint for how to handle beta to launch.

Shortage for the first few months of a console's existance are a good thing I'd think. Going into the second holiday season and still having issues is a very bad thing. A lot of parents were probably okay with waiting until this Xmas to get their kids a Wii but with Christmas fast approaching they need to buy something else. At this point it will probably be a 360 or PS3. By the next holiday season it won't be the hot item it is today I'd guess. (I think the console will be better overall by then in terms of games, especially 3rd party, but the newness will have worn off)

A month or two before launch it was inconceivable to me that the game would be ready for launch. The idea sounded fun, but frequent server crashes and insane lag definately hurt the game. He's wrong about beta not being QA though, you just have to handle it correctly. A large scale beta when your game can't keep the servers running more than 45 minutes is a terrible idea. They forgot that server and game client stability is paramount in a large scale beta, minor gameplay issues are fine. Those can be ironed out and most people willing to beta an MMO will see those as fixable. The problems a month before launch certainly didn't seem to be. (which is why I never tried it after launch...)

Regardless you don't say that about the people writing your paycheck, at least not until you find someone to write you a new one. No matter how much I disagree with something my company may do I don't tell me clients "We're so fucked up". How many studios would want to hire somebody knowing that if the game they are lead on isn't very good he'll call out the studio?

I could certainly see MS using it's momentum to try to up the stakes and move from a 5 year cycle to a 4 year, or slightly shorter, cycle. However given the fact that Nintendo has been making money off their console since day 1 I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't already fairly far along in the Wii's successor. Something with a more advanced version of the motion control and HD graphics. In fact, I'd be surprised if they weren't. I could definately see both companies hitting with new consoles in 2009 with little problem while Sony is still telling everyone just how awesome the PS3 is. And mark my words, if that does happen the PS3 will STILL cost more than the Wii successor.

Your wife is hardly the "norm" for females. She's a female gamer if she plays PC games and the 360 over the Wii, I promise. And let's not forget the Wii has been out over a year now and in the last two weeks sold 650,000 in the US. That seems really high to me but even if it's 1/2 that it absolutely blows entire month sales of the other two out of the water.

Chanting "the Wii is a fad" over and over won't make it so. The types of people going crazy over it are the same people who have been playing Nintendogs for the last year and sitll won't take it out of their DS. And if you were Nintendo, you'd laugh all the way to the bank when your product was called a fad.

Very surprising you're a single thrity-something...

As for your 40" 1080p and 30" 1080p, what a waste of money. There is NO improvement in 1080p until you get over 50" anyway. (most will argue 60+ in all honesty) Spend your money on your toys and the women will laugh at you stuck in your home on your setup while they're at your friend's house playing the Wii.

While I think he deserves it, I think "If it wasn’t for Ken and his concept of the original PlayStation, there wouldn’t be the billion dollar industry there is today" is a bit of a stretch. Sony entered at the perfect time but didn't really drive the industry where it wasn't already headed anyway.

That's the thing, there's no laws governing this sort of thing. Stores shouldn't sell M and AO games to minors for the very reason you state. If a parent is good with their kids playing it, they can come buy it. I think stores should do a better job of checking who they sell the stuff to, the reason some of the anti-voilence nazis are upset is because stores don't do a better job of filtering what children get. If my kid goes and buys a Playboy from a gas station without my knowledge is that bad parenting? I really don't think so. Now if I go buy him that same Playboy then I think we could agree that it's bad parenting. The stores take the parents out of the picture when they sell the games without their concent. Parent CAN block channels on their TV that meet a certain rating, they can put blocks on their Blockbuster account to prevent R movies from being rented by kids, etc. However this should not be enforced via legislation but rather than a self-policing system in the video game industry, like the ESRB does. But they can't make the stores follow their rules, that will have to come from the industry making it more desirable to enforce these restrictions.

Of course, parents should still check what their kids are playing no matter what, just like they should keep an eye on them online and should also probably search the room for the Playboy they might have.

The real question is can the PPU be put to use for other items? If AMD bought them out, integrated it into high end CPUs and/or FireGL workstation graphics cards it could be a big hit. Imagine how much it could help if they pushed it from just graphics to real world physics simulations and calculations for the scientific and architectural world, much the way they've written drivers for the ATI gfx cards that allow them to do any floating point operations and not just graphics acceleration. From that standpoint having it integrated into the Phenom CPUs, especially when they're up to 8 cores, could be huge. 1 PPU, 3 GPUs and 4 CPUs all in a single socket. There's some really solid potential there.

The government can't enforce sales based on ratings or else they've got a serious violation of free speech. There isn't any legal recourse for R movies or TVMA shows being shown to children, why on earth should there be with video games? Parents need something else to blame other than themselves. Remember a time when someone who was crazy was just called crazy and the media didn't try to blame it on any and everything else.

Ummm... Probably the greatest platformer of all time, at the very least tied with Mario 64, and hte only reason it's selling well is because there's not other good games? Regardless of what else is out there, SMG is a damn good game and anyone who doesn't play it is crazy. Unless you just hate all platformers (don't understand how a gamer could and claim to be a gamer) and don't want to play a flat-out great game, then yes SMG is a waste of time.

A cover that's distinguishable from the original can be used for profit, one that isn't cannot be used for profit. Put their own spin on it, as long as the words aren't changed, and it's fine.

Nintendo only reports purchased numbers. Those are what they've been told, rather than relying on outside source like NPD.
