| | This is exactly what Sony said they would do when the console was nearing launch. They said they would keep the price at $600 and add additional features. Seems to me it would be smarter to drop some of those "features" and get the price down ASAP. If they get it to $400 then they could keep it there forever and upgrade it when it's cost effective... | | Everyone here is missing the most important factor right now in the format war. Until Sony allows porn to be put on BluRay the format war will not end. The porn industry is too big and since their only option is HD-DVD that alone will prevent the format from dying. I used to think it wasn't a big deal, but no matter when I happen to drive past the adult video places here in Houston, they always seem like the parking lot is full of cars so apparently there's still a big market for it. | That's just plain silly... The Wii has sold so well because of many reasons, the price being a small part. When I hear people saying "My 14 year old daughter wants a Wii" or "My wife wants a Wii" or "I took my Wii home for Christmas and my Grandmother was playing Wii Sports and having a blast" etc, etc, etc.
Nintendo decided rather than compete for gamers with Sony and MS they would make their own market. VERY few people who are looking for a Wii will consider a cheaper X360 or PS3 an alternative simply because they want what the Wii offers. It's hard to grasp as a gamer but it's the truth. I love me some MGS but I'm not sure it's worth buying a $600 console for. Plus, I'll be spending most of my money on some of the new Wii games coming up. That's the only console that offers a different experience from my PC and the one that sees FAR more gaming use than the 360. | The problem with the "user friendly" aspect of Linux is the entire Open Source mindset and way of doing business. An Open Source dev isn't going to have the resources to spend money on just watching your average end user use their own software. Which means you have geeks attempting to write user friendly software for non-geeks without ever actually observing non-geeks using them. The reason Microsoft can do this as well as they do is because they can afford to spend money on just getting feedback from Joe Blow, Linux distros can't. Until that changes Linux will remain an OS by geeks for geeks. Of course, this does make it superior for a geek, but for 90% of the population it fails miserably.
Also, Vista x64 installed clean out of the box is far more secure than a Linux machine installed clean out of the box with no tweaking. Linux CAN be far more secure, but it requires some knowledge to do so. Vista doesn't require that which, in reality, makes it more secure. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Zelda alone trumps the entire PS3 lineup by leaps and bounds. MP3 is just around the corner, as is Smash Bros. And that's not counting Paper Mario, Tiger Woods and Madden. But the real draw of the console is anyone can play it. When I went to my in-law's house for Christmas this last year we took our Wii. There were lines to play just the little Wii Sports game, her Grandma (84) was LOVING the bowling. That right there makes it far more successful than any other console in history. It's lasting qualities shine because it's geared for everyone, not just gamers. Think iPod vs Every other MP3 player. | | Personally I wouldn't call the Pentium 4 a "small" failure, more like a "how the hell did any company survive that" failure. Fortunately the Sheeple ate it up and it took AMD years to make gains. In all honesty the C2D caught everyone offguard, AMD included. The types of engineers they have working there won't concede defeat easily and let's hope AMD has some tricks up their sleeve. | Are you serious? You've named proprietery controllers that were designed for specific games to show how Nintendo fails at innovation? Have you been taking notes from asdf?
Let's see, what has been successful. First shoulder buttons on a controller? Check. First pressure sensitive buttons on a controller? Check. First Analog stick? Check. Rumble? Check. The DS and Wii are examples of successes. Period. Neither of them are gimmicks. In fact, you can see by the announcement from MS about Surface today that that is the direction computing is going, to a more consumer-friendly approach. Just because you're savvy and have learned to interact with your computer/console using overly-complex and unintuitive devices doesn't mean everyone wants to do it.
The Wii isn't a gimmick. The DS isn't a gimmick. In fact, the DS has been out for 2 years now and is STILL wiping the floor with ALL competition. The Wii has been a huge success and will, by the end of the year, easily have the PS3 and 360 beaten in total sales. But that's just because of a gimmick right? It appeals to non-gamers because they don't have to learn 20 buttons on a controller and how exactly to roll this and time that in order to enjoy a game. They pick it up, they play, they have fun, then they go on about their business. That is the MAJORITY, you and I are in the minority.
Edit - One more thing. The Zapper, while not a huge success, really progressed shooting games in arcades and homes. Do you think we'd have Time Crisis if there had never been Duck Hunt? The Power Pad is the forerunner to the DDR games which have done extremely well, both home and arcade. Plus, Track and Field kicked ass. The power glove was neat but totally pointless, same with NForce. The Superscope came with a game that was no more expensive than other games and was incredibly fun. | | While I do agree with you on some level, it doesn't really apply to wild hogs. You have to understand that wild hogs are not native to the areas they live in currently. They damage the ecosystems of these regions beyond belief and description. Imagine how much food that 1000+ lb hog had to eat every single day to grow that big? Combine that with completely out of control populations and it's wreaking havocs on farmers, ranchers and even local wildlife. | Wow... So Lord of the Rings Online was the 7th best selling game the week ending April 21st. The game didn't even come out until April 24th. So 3 days before launch and it's on the top 10. That's pretty damn good.
