| | yea I know, i've finished it, but they're hardly in the story at all, they just completely drop off the radar and then randomly pop back up for 2 seconds, that's poor story telling right there, too much of the story was just underdeveloped Flag this | Edit this post |

| I have to agree half and half with you two, on the one hand I like how it's perfectly linear just like the original, on the other hand I don't think it's as good as the original, made me cry a little inside how cops don't give 2 sh!ts about what you do until you kill an old lady or nudge their car, i'm trying to play Mafia not GTA :/
another point is that the story in the end was pretty weak, the entire thing had extremely good scenes, brilliant dialogue and the like but in the end they were just that, scenes, they didn't form into a cohesive narrative just a poop ton of extremely well done one offs that don't have anything in common with anything else, I mean look at Vito's family, completely disappears straight away after you go to Joe's, ditto the dock guy unless there's some side missions I didn't know about, it just wasn't that well done on a whole Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I also agree they made the right call, we're only just getting to the stage where games are needing multiple DVDs but even then it has only affected a very small handful of games, mostly JRPG's with lots of prerendered FMV's Flag this | Edit this post |

| i'll admit I was a bit emotional when I said that and blaming consoles is all the rage (funny how just when I jump on the bandwagon people stop blaming it :/ ) but I wouldn't mind betting that consoles had a hand in it, cities would be far easier to render me thinks
but they've still taken away a big part of what I liked about Crysis and of what made Crysis work, I don't see good things ahead, at the very least I don't see a Crysis game Flag this | Edit this post |

| | they're severely overrating the franchise, it's just a bunch of standalone games not a mega franchise with lots of lore that allows expansion into other mediums/genres like Star Wars, Star Trek, Warcraft, Halo etc Flag this | Edit this post |

| | punishment I say, those who buy second hand won't be able to play in all servers, what if the map rotates into one of the DLC maps? 2nd hand owners get kicked out, pretty unfair imo, and what about in the future when the game is no longer available new? Flag this | Edit this post |

| "you seemed to contradict yourself saying that linear shooters can't pull it off, but bioshock and FEAR (both linear shooters) can. i realize that perhaps my smartass retort wasn't clear. :p"
my original post read "completely disagree, only 1 or 2 games actually pull this kind of thing off being FEAR and Bioshock of which the only reason it worked was because of the mind bending twists relating to the player character" which is why I referred you back to this post
I think part of the problem is that HL and HL2 are so different it never feels like the same game so it's as if the events of the first game never happened in regards to HL2, also I kill lot's of people, shouldn't the rest of the rebels be doing the same thing? part of the problem is also that everyone's 'yay it's freeman' is so lame :/
with your 3rd paragraph that's what I was saying, you feel in the world, I don't feel part of the world in HL2 partly because of how everyone treats me, though I guess in general I don't find the world believable at all either Flag this | Edit this post |

| "FEAR and bioshock aren't linear shooters?"
reread my original comment
"can make it seem as if the events in the game are really happening to you. in that instance, giving that character a pre-defined background and personality can actually detract from the player being able to identify with him."
that's the problem, it usually detracts from the experience for me when the character has no identity, actually no that's not it (read below) it's when you are implied heavily to be someone like in HL, all through HL2 everyone is like full in love with you and i'm like 'wtf? why the hell am I so special? I didn't do anything, just kill things :/' it's exactly what you said about Gordon saying things you wouldn't say except it's people reacting to you in a certain way, I actually should clarify, the original HL was fine it's the sequel that's more the problem
"in others, you want to feel like you ARE the hero, and it's a lot easier to create such an experience in a linear, scripted way, like in call of duty."
that's actually an interesting point that has had to make me rethink what my stance on this is, I think when you have a game where your character is utterly irrelevant ala CoD it works, the problem is that in games like HL2 too many people including the developers are trying to force it in your face that you're suppose to 'be' the character, that in itself f*cks it up royally and completely detracts from the experience and the actual feeling you're there, I disgaree with the comment about you feeling like you're the character, I think it should be more along the lines of that you actually feel like you're in the world,
I want to be me not someone else and quite frankly I can't be someone else but I can be in another world, if that makes sense lol Flag this | Edit this post |

| I never understand when people say they feel like they are the character in HL, there is no character to begin with and you can't feel like you are in a role unless you have choice, in a game like Oblivion I can feel like i'm the character because i'm making choices that both affect myself and the world but in a linear shooter it just doesn't happen, you're going by the paces the developers scripted in with no effect on anything
as I said it only works if the character you play as has some sort of uber twist that would not have played out if you had 3rd person cutscenes with a developed character with voice acting etc Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I don't like motion controls in general, from my experience they just don't work, in the case of the Wii I can easily just ignore the system but with the case of Natal and the PS3 thing there runs the risk of those same shoddy motion controls being forced into games I want to play Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I wouldn't have called it an opinion or even valid, it was a dummy-spit, having a bit of a rage more than anything else, who said the game would even support 3D in the first place? and i'm sure I heard that the 360 can do 3D, it was a full, unwarranted, attack on the 360 just because you won't be getting a game anymore, again yes it sucks but no reason for such a comment Flag this | Edit this post |

| "The most "compelling" way to experience Alan Wake is an outdated graphics platform with no 3D support? Yeah riiight MSFT."
with comments like that do PC players even deserve it? :/ yes it sucks on a major scale given they were using it to show off DX10 and quad core but please :/
also i'm curious as to what Soldier36's comments were last gen given the very significant performance gap between Xbox and PS2 :P Flag this | Edit this post |
