| | Hmm, according to a wikipedia article, the 3.2 GHz Cell with 8 SPE's could do about 200 giga FLOPS. Assuming 100% scalability, a 5-Cell processor with 5 PPC cores and 40 SPE's would be nearly equal to this 80-core Intel (Although just in floating point). I wonder which method is more efficient in transistor count. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I've been debating which version to buy. (PC, 360, PS3).
Today, I read 8 or 9 online reviews and the trend seems to be... PC looks and plays the best, but has a few stability problems that can crash to the desktop. Xbox and PS3 both had some framerate problems and looked worse overall. According to gamespot, the PS3 version was actually a bit worse than 360. (I expected the reverse since it used the Oblivion engine.) Gamespot also stressed that they recommended it on all 3 platforms, so the problems seemed to be more nitpicking than anything.
I'm now leaning toward PC, since it doesn't have much copy protection. (i.e. Dead Space.) I think I can handle the occaisional crash. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I like both PC gaming and console gaming. However, if Sony and MS copied the Wii, I would quit playing consoles. That wouldn't be a problem, but with Securom and other DRM measures on the PC, it's getting difficult to bring a game disc over to a friend's house and enjoy it with them. I've passed up PC versions of games for this very reason. It's gotten to the point I don't feel like I even own the PC games I buy anymore. It's as if I'm just renting them, but for $50. | He was talking about the PS3 not having games.
I feel he is right, though. Sony won the disc format war and lost the console war because of it. I really feel that if Sony launched the PS3 in 2005 without Blu-ray at a $399 price point (the BD added $200 to the cost at launch) they would've outsold the 360 from the start. Once the 360 got its lead, it forced the devs to make games with the 360 as the lead platform.
However, I've noticed that when the premium 360 and PS3 are equally priced, the PS3 outsells the 360 by a modest margin. After the 360 price drop, the 360 now has a modest weekly sales lead. (vgchartz.com) Sony has to match prices with MS in order to cut the market in half. If they play their cards right, they could possibly lead the 360 at the end of this generation, but I won't care by then. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Sorry, I should've been more clear. I'm not worried about wattage, but more concerned about PCIe connections. I suppose I could get an adaptor to convert molex to an 8-pin PCIe, but I'd rather not. I most definately won't get a new PS until I build a new PC in a few years. So for a midrange guy like me, finding decent cards a couple years from now could be problematic. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I wonder how much power the new generation will use. 2x6-pin PCIe connecters isn't enough for a high-end card anymore. Obviously, at the highend it doesn't matter. People who buy $500 cards have no issue with $200 power supplies. Its the mainstream I'm worried about. I hope the power issue doesn't creep into the midrange. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | It's also a card that many people will buy. Most people I know have higher priorities than their PC's. (Rent, cars, family, social life, etc.) Cards in the $100-200 range is exactly what people in this demographic will end up with. Your snobbish remarks remind me why money and common sense don't always go hand in hand. Flag this | Edit this post |

| You can flame the 360 all you want. It won't change the fact that many PS3 exclusives have gone cross-platform to the 360. It won't change the fact that many games are coming to the 360 first before the PC. You might like the "elite" exclusive nature of the PS3 and PC, but that is EXACTLY what is killing those platforms. The devs have to recoup their costs somehow.
Also, I CAN afford to upgrade my PC's card AND grab a PS3. I just don't think its worth it when I can just use a $199 crapbox (in your words) to essentially play everything those systems have to offer. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I'm a bit disappointed Blu-ray is going to win. I just looked up the 2 formats on wikipedia, and supposedly HD-DVD has no region codes. Blu-ray has optional region codes. Not a deal breaker, but a non-region coded format is kinda cool. The main thing I like about Blu-ray is the larger capacity, but I like how HD-DVD was implemented (managed copy mandatory, lack of region codes, cheaper.) Flag this | Edit this post |

| | The PS3 uses a graphics chip equivalent to a 7950 GT (550 Mhz core, 700 Mhz memory) but with half the memory bandwidth and buffer (128-bit 256MB versus 256-bit 512MB). Using Bioshock on my PC (-w- C2D 6600, 7950GT, & 2GB 667 DDR2) as a reference, I need to run it at 1024x768 to play the highest ingame settings and maintain a framerate of 30-60 fps range. My videocard is too slow to run Bioshock @ 1280x1024 at a framerate I like. And this is without any antialiasing and a factory overclocked card. I'm using the box version and Nvidia's drivers from last October. I'm curious how the RSX will handle the load, even with optimizations. The screenshots were definately grainy, and remind me of the demo screens you see of games running on dev kits. I guess what I'm trying to say is, it looks too good to be true. | How does winning $250,000 make you retarded?
The mouse/keyboard combination is superior to a controller, but the comparison is biased. No one would argue that in a math test, the man with the calculator is smarter than the guy using his head... just faster due to his hardware. I honestly think the best players are bred in highly competitive environment with a huge pool of players. Like it or not, Halo 3 has a good case for breeding good competition. The base is huge, the hardware is a level playing field, and the match-making ensures the best matchups. If all PC and console gamers were forced to use the same input device, I'm not so sure who would win. Flag this | Edit this post |
