» The hatred I see is amazing
I'm really amazed by all the whining and hatred. I guess the zombies have been trained to be smart and cool, and that means bashing the big boy...
I was at AT, and I saw that nvidia had created a new technology in their driver, ambient occlusion, and it produced shadows, in fact in that two year old game, HL2, that never were there before and no game code developement was needed to see - and gigantic crew of raging red rooster rooters typed things like: " Shadows suck, who needs em"
" I turn shadows off so I can see "
"another gimmick that can't make any game better"
" If I want shadows I'll turn down brightness "
"games are too dark already screw shadows they suxxorsss!!!! "
It was really amazing, since the same crew immediately afterwards started braying about Havok, dissing PhysX, bawling about tesselation and claiming nvidia blocked it's implementation on ati hardware, and on and on and on !
I've never seen a bigger crowd of ragging women in my entire life.
I see the same thing all over the place, raging red roosters, ragging like sourpussed nags, old crinkly witchy nags you might kill instantly when encountered in a game.
It's just amazing to me.
Meanwhile ATI loses billions a year on just billions a year in sales, Nvidia makes a profit, and gains 6% desktop market share...
I guess it takes a cranky old witch to understand all the problems with the most popular and full featured and multi-use desktop videocard.
Cuda
PhysX
Modded and default game profiles in driver
Forced sli in default driver
Secondary card RE-use for PhysX
Ambient Occlusion shading and shadows free
TWIMTBP game support
Ntune OC ! for boards, cpus ram and the NVcards
Shall I go on ?
Ati has NONE of those above.

» It's very, very scary for red roosters!
What would be the reason... hmmm....
" Since going beyond 512bit is impractical/impossible (Core i7 is 192bit). But, since both using GDDR5, odd nvidia going aggressive with 512bit when 384bit GDDR5 would be plenty. "

Uhh, the problem is 384 bit is NOT enough, the core, with MIMD and the way they REMADE IT a REVOLUTION in videocard cores... uhh.. with TWICE the core processing power means they NEED DDR5 at 512 bit...
.
HELLO !
( I can hear the raging red rooster fanboy rooters running around the barnyard in circles clucking and flapping their tiny wings all a tither, the red gobbler flopping back and forth - oh it's pandemonium! )

» I love reviews like this
I love reviews like this because as everyone is focusing on the new 4770 at 40nm, the TRUTH about the 9800, the whined over "crappy two year old core of old tech nvidia" WHOMPS THE 4850 IN ALMOST EVERY SINGLE BENCHMARK OF EVERY SINGLE GAME.
Yes, when the red rooster party isn't paying attention, the truth is blaring into their palmed faces, the two year old nvidia core slaps down their RV770 -
HA HA HA ! BWAHAHAHAHAHAAA !
I'm certain the red roosters will have some kind of back alley gutter spewing inanities to argue otherwise, twisting every sort of logic ever held up under science or just common sense - to somehow discount that SAD, SAD fact about ati -- " oh, it's the cheaper, smaller silicon core, that ati can make so much more profit off of - and on and on (ATI is losing billions) "...
THAT NASTY, CRAPPY, REBRANDED NVIDIA CORE SPANKED THE CRAP OUT OF THE 4850 - THE 4850 DOES NOT EVEN BEGIN TO COMPETE WITH THE GT200 !
The red roosters love to compare a whole level ABOVE their cards capability and even claim a win ... bigger spinmeisters than our politicians...
Well, just check the "4770" charts and see - sorry there red roosters.... the 4850 is UNDER that nvidia core you hate so much... proving ati cores are YEARS BEHIND, too, and still years behind the GT200.
Oh well... they are teensy tiny, burning up, crammed full of electricity, overheating ,electromigrating, strained to the max ati cores, too, to just keep up.
Better take the easy way out and slam some DDR5 on em and hope nvidia doesn't...
(oh ! that already happened)
Thanks for proving the awesomeness of the 9800 when the red roosters weren't paying attention ! It SPANKS ati two years after it was made.
Thank you thank you thank you !

» LOL
On the other hand, if you're not filled with sourpuss whining consumerism of the lowest variety, in between the cries and howls of Nvidia not making money on their "too big GT200 cores" while ATI has been losing billions a year steadily, making iterrations it can't afford on "efficient" little squares of silicon, cranked full of electricty and electromigration, you might view it another way.
Like this way: Nvidia's two year old core competes with ATI top core, the RV770, UNLESS ati jams ddr5 on it - boosting it past that old Nov 07 core that has been whined about so often, everywhere.
Add in the cries and piteous howls about "rebranding", where we have for instance in shaders, 64,92,112,128 for starters, bit width of 64,128,192,256 and 384, 448, even 512, memory of ddr2 or ddr3, memory size varying from 128,256,512,and 1024, and SUDDENLY "rebranding" comes into perspective - a highly configurable, multi tiered capable CORE, and a company THAT CAN HANDLE MAKING THE CHANGES OFTEN, WITH at least 13 sorted variables of multiplicity.
I guess the truth REALLY IS - ATI cannot handle making changes, because they cannot afford it, and are losing money anyway, and have been for SEVERAL YEARS while nvidia made profits.
Nonetheless, the 4870,4850, and 4830 are all the same core, 512 and 1024 versions of each, 6 different combinations of REBRANDING, no different than nvidia whatsoever - ATI also CRIPPLES their core to change it...
Sorry charlies, the big fat lie and facepalm is on YOU !
You've been sold a line for so long, you never thought beyond your angry little hatred of superiority and fanboyistic spewing.
NOPE - you're not correct - ATI does the very same thing - only can't do it as much, because they're losing billions, and ANY CHANGE costs money - redoing memory, chopping up the core shaders, changing the memory size or bit width, and new art for the boxing and drivers for the new iterration...
ATI is a LOSING COMPANY and has to squeak by in the red with LESS - fewer models, fewer choices, you're not one of a kind or interesting and diverse, you're a hammered conehead of near singular cloning, a stilfed, controlled ati zombie, "mmmm meps! meps ! !"
So much for being different... so much for being unique, being interesting, learning from differences - might as well have a tincup stamping machine for ati, as that is what it is anyhow, and if they were making money, which they are not, and haven't been, we'd see some diversity.
Instead, the 2 year old nvidia core competes with ati's latest core all the way to the top, unless you jam DDR5 on the ati.
A G80,G92,G92b with DRR5 would be a 4870 or 4890 - this WE KNOW, as the 4850 is the competing level otherwise, which is a 4870 without ddr5.
DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

» Uhh, this is capitalism and a republic
It's so funny, everyone loves to claim perfect price for their percieved performance cone they have everyone in. Does this happen in cases, colored cabling, operating systems, internet connections speed - or any other enthusiast purchase area, or consumer area, like automobiles for instance ?
NO, everyone buys what they want, half of it for showing off, a lot of it for comfort, peace of mind, laziness...on and on...
Only online in computer enthusiast areas do we have a CONSTANT little jealous mr tip of the century complaints crew, as if their great wisdom should be followed by the dummy noob that actually works for a living showing up to buy the gtx285.
Well, it's just the opposite actually, the dumber they are, the more power they need, the more garbage that inhabits their system...your great and sage advice means NOTHING to someone who easily affords it.
It all sounds nice and pretty to give out all the mr shrinking prune advice, just like SOME review sites to, blabbering on, parsing every 3 frames and five or ten bucks, but the fact is - near EVERYTHING is overbought in todays modern societies, and videocards should not be an exception, period!
If you cannot afford the darn things, keep whining and giving downward advice, but the truth is you just can't buy it, mommies allowance isn't in yet, or that bag of dope looks better, or you're just plain goofy - since requirements for computer gaming power CONSTANTLY RISE, and within 6 months or a year or two, the card being poo-pooed will be desperately needed, and it nearly is already.
The little jealous two bit today only know it all visionless, futureless, non paid, incorrect, pushy, opinionated, short sighted, broke without a dime to spare, internet consultant. Amazing.
Everything in the west is a luxury, especially computer gaming, a hobby, and everyone knows noone wants the Corvette, or the Lambourghini, right ?
lol - It's so pathetic, I'm so sick of hearing it. It's barely a week and a half of MINIMUM WAGE. It's burger flipping price for pete sakes.

» I love all the CEO's we have here
You know it's been amazing to watch all the CEO's around the net that repeat what arises on hardware review sites everywhere.
My problem is, ATI was losing 2 billion while all the little clucking parrots were spewing out their kooky ideas. (obviously kooky since ATI lost 2 billion while they screamed savings).
Sometimes bigger still is better, and that USA motto isn't dead, as Nvidia was posting profits on those bigger cores (cept the q4 08 worldwide downturn)...
So this whole little CEO's on every post site should just go away - it's so irritating watching some red rooster fan spew that and not point out the ATI losses and NVidia gains during their spew.
I'm really sick of it.
How about "ATI was losinbg so much money and not making a profit like NVidia, they HAD TO go cheap with a tiny core crammed full and hot like heck to just try to get by, but they still lost money doing it.
What's so wrong with the TRUTH ? They tried to get by on the cheap, with tricks that kept that core hammered full and cooking like a rocket flame, and it did well for gaming, but it sure didn't make em a profit !
Loks like Nvidia is done being nice to them, and is going to DDR5 and 512 bit bus with MIMD - that just might destroy ati in top end market share.

» ATI has smaller core yet more heat
The funny thing has been how ati's smaller cores were cooking much hotter, and except for 1-3 watts in 3d, used 30 more watts in idle, and somehow ati fans considered that a power win and efficient - when 1/10th 2d desktop time destroyed the tiny 3d advantage.
So anyway, the red cards are burning up from electromigration, you can see that in the returns at sites like the egg. Their heatsinks burn my fingers, too.
Nvidia has a bigger core on 200 top end and beats ati with ddr3. That bodes quite darkly if this article is correct and NVidia's improved core has ddr5 and a 512 bit width - twice the flops - we're talking red rooster DEATH.
Hope they stay close in competition for pricing reasons, but Nvidia's massive added values should make the choice easy. Nvidia gained 6% desktop market share - at least that tells me people don't buy red rooster lies.
I can't stand lies - especially in something scientific - spun with bs, not good.

» With ATI shaders, divide by 5
One has to remember ati shaders, commonly numbered at 320 and 640 and 800 - MUST be divided by 5 to get the nvidia equivalent.
Red rooster fans often forget that - hence 320 is 64 shaders, 640 is 128 shaders, and 800 is 160 shaders - matching the Nvidia 64,92,112,128,192,216,240 shaders ( 64 and 128 specifically).
So, they use the amd "equivalent" to intel thing, but stretch it out in a huge lie and break it entirely for marketing purposes.
Not too bright red roosters think they really are getting 800 shaders, instead of 192, 216, or 240.
LOL - It's pathetic nowadays.

» Why hurry when yer so far ahead already ?
Nvidia is in no hurry, and if they do crush ati anymore, those 2 billion dollar ati losses could take down amd with them. They just "restructured" which is a fancy word for avoiding bankruptcy...amd ati are now reverse palm facing eachother in multi billion dollar losses each, with barely a multibillion (5-6) sales base.
Word is NVidia has a MIMD instead of SIMD (multiple instead of single) a highly flexible and efficient chip coming, and I've already seen the downplaying cluckings of the red rooster tester fan sites... they're worried, don't want to talk about it, they see the writing on the wall already.
We won't know till it plays out, it's going to be interesting, saw ati changed plans again and heard a two chip rumor for the next round - not sure if thats mobile or desktop - or even real.
I'd start praying ati lasts though, if anything.

» Yeah that would be too bad, huh
Lord drooler, would be too bad if Larrabee destroys nvidia too late, and this article proves correct, and all the little clucking red rooster fans are stuck with an ati piece of crud half as fast as nvidia's, huh !
LOL
Aww, poor baby red roosters, no place to turn but to another company to do the work ati failed at.
lol - Oh I can hardly wait to see all the excuses!
________
1 GHz Larrabee cores are required to maintain 60 FPS at 1600x1200 resolution in several popular games, 25 cores required for Gears of War with no antialiasing, 25 cores for F.E.A.R with 4x antialiasing, 10 cores for Half-Life 2: Episode 2 with 4x antialiasing.
Performance on these games scales nearly linearly with the number of cores up to 32 cores. At 48 cores the performance drops to 90% of what would be expected if the linear relationship continued.
Larrabee chips 32 x86 mini micro processor cores and come out in late 2009, fabricated on a 45 nanometer process. Chips with a few defective cores due to yield issues will be sold as a 24-core version.
YES, GOOD FOR OLD GAMES, CAN'T EVEN PULL OFF CRYSIS.

» Amd ATI prevent open bankruptcy
This is good for competition staying alive but that's about it.
Larabee is for mega multi core, and were talking a decade plus before games convert to it if they do. You gonna buy 48 cpus with "graphic cores" to play crysis ? Server boards... that is targetting big hollywood RENDERING firms with movie rendering server space.
