| | (Post a comment) » E3 2006 Battlefield 2142 ImpressionsNo matter what your final opinion is on the game's themselves, no one can dispute that the three games in Digital Illusions' multiplayer Battlefield series have been a huge success with millions of copies sold and tens of thousands of players online at any one time. Now DICE and their new owner/publisher Electronic Arts are planning to release Battlefield 2142 this fall and at E3 2006 we got hands-on to play a build of the game.
Yep, the Battlefield series is heading for the future in its next installment but based on our playtime with the build the future isn't going to be much different than the present; infrantry classes still has bullet based automatic weapons and flying machines. The art style is very industrial and looks much like the future depicted in movies like Aliens; In other words, don't expect the basic look and feel of the Battlefield series to change drastically. Whether you feel this is a good or bad thing is up to you.
There will be some differences in Battlefield 2142. You have access to new vehicles like the hover tank which as its name suggests glides around above the ground which could actually make tank battles more fun. And of course you have the mini-mechs that have been the centerpiece of the screenshots released from the game.
The biggest change for Battlefield 2142 is the new Titan mode which DICE and EA hopes players will gravitate to like they have with the Conquest mode in previous games in the series. The Titan itself is a huge flying fortress that each side in the match has access to. The goal is to destroy the other team's Titan and to do that you have to get through the ship's tough shields. While you can do it the old fashioned way by having each team member shoot at the shields with their various weapons and vehicles, the ideal and shorter way to accomplish this is to capture missile silos that are scattered around the map and then fire those missles at the enemy's Titan. Once the shields are down your team uses "assault pods" to fly up to the enemy ship where they then go inside to destroy four control points inside and finally you can destroy the Titan's nuclear reactor. Oh, did we mention that you have to parachute off the enemy Titan before the ship goes nuclear? The Titan mode feels a lot like the Assault mode in the original Unreal Tournament and it will be curious to see if players will enjoy it.
Battlefield 2142 uses the Battlefield 2 engine and as such there isn't a lot of improvements graphically between the two games. However, the two games do have a different way of handling player classes. You have four classes to choose from but you can vary your weapons loadout in a ton of different ways and different load outs affect how fast or slow your player will be in the game. It should make players think harder about what they can and can't supply themselves with in the game.
Battlefield 2142 may be an evolution rather than an all new look at the franchise but it looks like there will be more than enough new things in the gameplay to keep fans busy. And hey, you get to drive a two legged mech around so that's something. Look for Battlefield 2142 to be released this fall and we hope to get more info on the game in the coming months. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

Thats the whole point, their trying to get you all hyped up so you
want to get your hands on it as soon as possable so you can play it.
It's their way of making money. Their probably going to tell us all
this information later or not even until the game is released. Just
have to wait, besides, their just going to keep delaying it just
like every other game. You guys really have to read every article in
heavy detail. Battlefield 2142 is now schedualed for Winter of 2006
instead of Fall now. I play BF2 constantly and their are still alot
of bugs(even after v1.3) and their making BF2142 now. Just waiting
for how many bugs BF2142 is going to have. They even started making
BF2142 back when BF2 was just being released.
News Note: Battlefield 2: Armoured Fury is to be released tomorrow
June 6th, 2006.

christ, it's noob central in here. don't you kids have something
better to do with your time?
but to the point: why the hell do NO gaming sites give us the info
that we really need? we already know about the game modes and gfx
engine ffs!
what is weapon accuracy like? can you run and gun like bf42 or do
you need to be prone to be effective like bf2? are anti-armour
rockets guided, seeking or dumbfire? describe some of the maps and
objectives! speed, toughness and damage output of vehicles?
give serious gamers real information instead of the same
regurgitated bull5h1t every other advertisement-pretending-to-be-a
gaming-site has!

The fact is after 140 years we're still using exploding artillery
shells, rifles and machine guns. The most significant advances
during that span time were tanks and aircraft. Tactics on the
battlefield haven't changed much since WWII. Stanley Kubrick's 2001
envisioned us having a luxury spacestation, HAL 9000 and manned
expeditions to Jupiter by 2001 (it would be a stretch to imagine
that happening by 2101). So I'd say their take on combat in 2142 is
completely reasonable.

other improvements include telephones, buggies to steam to gas to
electric/hydrogen cars, aviation, space travel, internet... the list
goes on. think how far computers have come in the past thirty
years, and think of where they're going and where they could in a
century.
136 years seems like a long time to make some new stuff we've never
seen before, especially at the exponential rate at which technology
advances over time.

By the end of next year, the U.S. armed forces plans to begin
deploying a modified passenger jumbo jet that carries a ginormous
laser system capable of destroying ballistic missiles in flight at
ranges over 200 miles. A smaller land-based truck system will arive
next capable of shooting down incoming short-range missiles (scuds,
etc.) near the front lines. Soon after, even smaller systems are
planned for the Joint Strike Fighter that can disable/destroy ground
targets from high altitude.
The "Titan" mode may be fun, but it's much more likely
that in the apparent reality of a future scenario, a mobile
ground-to-air laser system would quickly put down such a flying
monstrosity.
Good thing it's just a game.

Did you see image eight? I'd say some things have changed ;-)
Also the helocopters are definitely not fueled by gasoline, if you'd
look. I'd say it's 2142. Or, in parts, 2242...
But I mean, when you think about it, how much has changed for us in
the last 136 years? Sure, things are different, but they're mostly
improvements on existing technology, the computer being one
noticible exemption (for the most part) to the rule.
Lol.. btw it took me a while to figure out what the hell you were
talking about... "136 years..? 200 by my count.." :)

says the man with 2 identical posts lol
its obviously an allusion to BF1942, the technology seems a lot more
like BF 2042 IMHO, apparently not much progress has been made in 136
yrs
