| | (Post a comment) » AMD Athlon 64 FX-62/X2 5000+ AM2 Performance PreviewToday AMD is introducing the successor to today's 939-pin Athlon 64 processors, the 940-pin AM2 socket. The new socket brings with a number of changes, most notable of which is DDR2 memory, while CPU's based on the new platform boast such features as lower power consumption and AMD's virtualization technology. But that's not all, as today AMD is also introducing two new processors: the Athlon 64 X2 5000+ and the FX-62. See how the new chips perform in comparison to their predecessors with both single-card and SLI configurations in today's article! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

There was a benchmark carried out between s754 Sempron 3000+ and
sAM2 Sempron 3000+ and the s754 Sempron came out on top most of the
time!

socket 939 has had long and glorious run. Maybe I sound like a
fanboy, but I think it has been impressive.

Yes, I do, but people on this thread are talking about how well it
performs overclocked by almost double! I doubt that quiet/cool/low
power use will still apply.
I'll stay openminded, but I am sick of overclocking (including my
video cards). If an unclocked conroe beats a 5000+ and has a
favorable price point, I'm in.
"
Ummm... you do realize that the Conroe is NOT based from the P4, but
rather an evolution of the well regarded (quiet/cool/low power use)
Core Duo (that evolved from the Pentium M... that evolved from the
Pentium III, etc.). "

"To heck with conroe! I will not have another loud, power
hungry,
flaky, often BSOD, half-lived, heavily overclocked piece of rubbish
next to my desk."

flaky, often BSOD, half-lived, heavily overclocked piece of rubbish

I'll take the 5000+ and a single 7900gt, thanks much.

Yeah, I gotta admit this socket change is not typical for AMD.
Afterall, SocketA lasted for years and years, to even include 64 bit
Semprons. Nevertheless, I'm not sure what point you are trying to
make. You WILL need new memory and new motherboard, and the chip
itself if upgrading to Conroe, too. Intel is much much bad less
flexible with the CPU-mobo support. Starting from i865/i875, through
all their PCIE, users and/or motherboard manufacturers went through
many VRM and socket revisions. And just when you thought, Intel
would have settled on something for a few months, they would
introduce a new stepping which would either require a new BIOS for a
few forward-thinking boards, or a completely new motherboard...
ofcourse none of this is a problem for joe consumer, because the
folks making the pre-built system went through all the trouble.

what does that mean! is there more to this artical! i demand to see
it! dont leave me handing!
this is probibly going to be a real revolution, because both amd and
intel are looking at eachother square in the eyes with these too
platforms. the are swords meant to cross.
this is AMDs temporary solution, and an extra 15FPS in QUAKE 4 isnt
bad at all. will conroe persue? will conroe pull ahead? intels PR
certianly seems to think so.

Be it as it may, the AM2 socket might shake off the performance
issues with later revisions and new processors. Right now, they are
just getting their feet wet with the new socket.
DDR modules, like stated in the article, are starting to age. Now
with faster speeds, tighter timings and lower prices (unless rambus
gouges the market for DDR2) it would only be logical to update,
bringing with that the new HT 3.0 technology and you have a
significant bandwidth upgrade for applications.
AMD just does not want to be forced to deal with limited BW and, if
not now, sometimes in the near future would have had to upgrade
their systems before they would be so far behind in the processor
market.
