» PlayStation 3: E3 Aftermath

With E3 now gone, we look back on how the consoles clashed. Will Sony demolish the competition for a third time, or has their Blu-Ray venture induced a fatal flaw in PlayStation strategy?

All three companies are doing things that I dislike. Sony is offering a console that would likely suit my gaming tastes, but costs far more than I want to pay. Microsoft has a similarly powerful console at a cheaper price, but is offering games that I would either rather play on my PC, or not be interested in at all. And Nintendo is offering something that is indeed new and innovative, but I'm not sure that I'd like it (I buy only one console every generation, so it's got to keep me interested and not just be a gimmick that I'll get bored with)

I can remember when the 3do came out at a $600 price but then it was worth it because there really was nothing that could come close. With the ps3, the 360 is equal in every way except for blueray. I dont think that will work to sony's advantage because they can't just drop making dvd movies in light of blueray. so people will still be able to get the latest movies on dvd add in the fact that there are players now with hdmi that can upscale to higher res for less than the price of a new blueray or hd dvd player. I dont care for playing anything but games in my consoles. Even if i were to get a ps3 I wouldnt be getting any movies. It was movies that was hurting the psp and sony knew that which is why movie companies are backing off. If it isnt accepted by the majority it wont sell. Blueray will be just like the umd movies and most likely will be dropped by the majority of supporters in favor of just plain old ordinary dvd movies. If it means no more previews or bonus features on the same disc as the movie, so be it. I am sure hd quality movies could be on regular dvd media so long as all the bonus stuff was on another disc.

Personally i'd rather spend 200$ more to get universal dvd and blue-ray player instead of dvd only with an option to buy hd-dvd. Not even counting possibly better rest of hardware.
Also saving 50$ or so on online gaming in exchange for bunch of spam mails sounds like a good deal (especially since I can automatically redirect most of it with various filters to trashcan instantly).

Besides games from X-box like Kotor or Oblivion are much better on PC anyway ;)

Personally, I would rather not have Blu-ray or HD-DVD on a gaming console which I primarily use for gaming.
But hey, to each his own.

(yes they are a tabloid...so it's mostly crap)

They say very few japanese are interested in the 360...while primarily are into the Wii..and a lesser extend the PS3 due to the higher price.

I bet you it will be reflected in the marketshare a few years down the road.

It would have been better for the consumer if sony offered a choice in blue ray or dvd based ps3. Reason being is that even though sony wants to push blueray, they have stated that it wil be for movies only. Maybe there will be a time when game content will be on that media but for now it aint going to happen. So basically if they offered a dvd only ps3 you would still be able to play all the games the fully loaded ps3 would. MS with the hd dvd has said the same thing for the 360. Movies only as there is no reason to make games on hd dvd. The amount of content of a game just doesnt warrant a higher capacity media. You could almost say the same for movies. Unless movie companies want to make movies longer and game companies want to make games longer then the new high capacity media is a joke. Blueray should be an option instead of a requirement. That way the difference in price of ps3 would be based solely on the drive and not the other stuff.

With the 360 it is a 360 no matter if you get the core or premium. There is no physical internal hardware dfference between them. You can get the hdd and wireless and bingo, you have made a core into a premium. With sony, there is no way to take a core ps3 and make it into a premium ps3 because of the internal changes being made. HDD size isnt so much the issue but the lack of wifi, hdmi, card reader are all physical "internal" attachments that can not be purchased seperatly.

Bottom line is sony will sell ps3's by the truck load but it will take them longer to do so. Had they opted to make two ps3 units with everything but the actual drive the same they would sell both types equally and faster. The blueray equiped unit for $600 and the dvd equiped one for $400. Then promote the blueray for the added $200 value vs paying $800+ for a stand alone player.

Thats never gonna happen. ps3 was designed to manuever blu ray (& Cell) into everyones living rooms (unfortunately for sony thats gonna come at a HUGE price!). Having a cheaper non blu ray version of the ps3 would undermine this strategy.
BTW i believe all games will be on blu ray and not on DVD9s, otherwise this will effectively negate the advantages of blu ray - size, and its importance in creating 'nextgen' games. They have always claimed a size advantage when it comes to media storage. However if you have evidence that suggests that ps3 games will be primarily on DVD9s then i would be inclined to believe you (ie any links?). Anyway

As a multimedia machine the ps3 is good (even excellent) value

As a games console it has questionable value (considering price and cheaper alternatives with that offer similar gaming experience)

At US$600+ it offers NO value to the average consumer

Thats how i see it

The question is: Do I really want a Blu-Ray player when all I really want to do is play PS3 games? What if the movies I like comes out on HD-DVD and not Blu-Ray? Why is Sony forcing us to have Blu-Ray by including it Playstation, which is really meant for playing games.
