» Gaming in the Mainstream Media

Video and PC games are a multi-billion dollar entertainment industry. So why don't they get the attention of movies or TV? FiringSquad interviews several members of the mainstream media, including reporters from Time, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly and more, to find the answers and see how journalism will cover games in the future.

» Great Article
Great article. Bit of real journalism on a games site. Nice to see.
However i think as other commenters have said, the article needs to address what will happen to games as the marketplace moves more and more mainstream?
Can anyone say EA BIG?

» Good article and man do I hope gaming never becomes mainstream!
I know for some people it would be nice if the rest of the world gets gaming but I for one don't really hope it will happend. Why?

Because the more a mainstream, polished, big money industry gaming becomes the more crappy games become. The effect is all ready here where games have become such a money driven thing that the love has gone. It's virtualy for any one man, or a small team for that matter, to make a game since it just drowns in all the BS.

Less and less games are driven by innovation and real content as it's more and more about the latest graphics. And while this very nice it's really not what gaming should be about. It's to be about fun and not about market shares :-(

Looked what happend to Deus Ex 2 or Halo 2 for that matter. The first game in the series was like a slightly flawed diamond and the next was perfect on it's surface only to be discovered having been made artificially with big $$$ in the eyes of thoose exec and ceo's calling the shoots.

this is best article that FS has ever done I think. why? Because it's not just doing the same 'ole, same 'ole. It reaches out and does what seems like some good 'ole fashioned reporting and researching. Great job. Interesting stuff.

Chris Morris from cnn.com has always been a pretty good games writer. In fact, I've occasionally read the gameover column and have come out *gasp* informed about something I didn't already know. As somebody who visits gametab.com about five times a day, I'm definitely impressed when the "mainstream" press produces something informative.

On the flip side, Wook Kim of Entertainment Weekly is totally backwards about the whole thing. Kim said that EW's readers aren't interested in games, and wouldn't know Will Wright, and that Dan Brown is a household name. Whose fault is that though? I think it IS EW's job to start pushing gaming. Kim said the reader base isn't interested in gaming, so why not try and grow the reader base? It's only a matter of time until people are talking about game devs the same way people talk about directors and authors now -and it's already happening to some degree among gamers with guys like Miyamoto.
