» Prey demo: Another worthless FPS
Don't buy this game, it has no depth.

[bory, dialogues

Its just another Doom 3/Quake 4 game, a little talk and a few unintelligent sentencens and then your in an alien and gross environment shooting. I'd love more technical mojo and good sentences.

Play System Shock 2 for good technical mojo (even for todays standards) and good voice-acting and intelligent dialogue and a very scary story that holds back and get better as you progress in the game.

Displaing the main character and having him speak can make you forget you are in the game.

Gameplay

and complex missions, or more strategic action like Half Life 2s physics: blow up a bridge and they fall down. Where is the concept of arena, then explore, then puzzle? Here its no arena just indoor architecture and corridors with random placed encounters.

"Walking-in-the-roof" and box-portals are very WOW at first but then not very depthy.

Weapons

The weapons are tame and not very interesting, their sound effects are plush and not as instant as i.e Quake 3 or Half Life 2 machine gun. With those we get more solid feeling.

Would be nice if the weapons had a story and explanation or he had to "learn" how to use them? A little more depth that is.

Monsters

The monsters are very fake when they get hit and die, and if you continue shoot them they won't blow up/dismember. When they are frozen they won't shatter. One should be able to shoot the brain-in-belly zomebies in the belly and it would shatter and you could give it critical hits there. It would add depth and gameplay, which is the most important factors in a fun game.

It's almost as bad as the monsters in Unreal 2.

If I wan't brainless and fun action let me have Doom 1&2, there we have huge arenas, lots of monsters, satesfying hits (pronounced and solid blood splatter, made possible because of the low resolution), satesfying death animations and weapons with personality and good sound FX. Quake 3 Arena also has good weapons and gameplay and the arcade feeling.

IF you disagree with this information please explain what you like with the game and share your insight.

The engine doesn't suck. What sucks is this annoying new "scary and dark" game design. Doom3 engine can definitely do outdoor enviros with plenty of brightness.

The engine does what it does better than any other, including that not-so-hot FEAR game.

» John Carmack's an idiot.
The Doom 3 engine is ugly. It can't render anything soft or organic. That's why the people look creepy and synthetic. It's too dark because the lighting engine does a poor job of representing reflected light.

If John Carmack actually was a genius he wouldn't have spent over 5 years making an engine that looks this bad.

These guys look like zombies:

It's not the engine, moron, it's the artistic choices.

As to Prey:

1. Feels like War of the Worlds. I was waiting for Dakota Fanning or Tom Cruise to pop-in.

2. Feels like a Doom 3 expansion right down to the metal textures.

3. The AI is terribly stupid.

4. The wall walking is a gimmick at best.

5. When your guy says stuff it kills the immersion of the game immediately. That's not my voice and I don't feel like that person anymore.

"It's not the engine, moron, it's the artistic choices."

If it's the artists who determine the way the game looks then why is John Carmack known for his graphics programming? Shouldn't it be the artists that get the credit?

All the games using the Doom 3 engine look bad because of the way the lighting engine calculates the colors to display. This is controlled by the programmers not by the artists.

They do get the credit. And it's still up to the artists in how they want the game to look. Take a look at QuakeWars if you want bright and realistic looking outdoors.

The D3 engine has unfixable sound probelms with weapon firing on my hardware (same with D3 and Q4), so this game is a no go for now...

I'd have to agree that the D3 engine is way overpraised here in this article. It never struck me as being something I'd consider to be "next-gen" technology. Graphics are cartoony, no soft shadows, overall, just dated looking visuals. And don't ge me started on that bullcrap 60fps cap Carmack did... what a step backwards that call was. I still believe Carmack is an amazing programmer, but he really let me down with the D3 engine. Come on John, let's start from scratch, I know you can do leagues better than this engine. Don't force us to use that dreaded "com_fixedtic" command anymore!!!

Soft Shadows, like in HL2 where the shadows bleed thru objects? Yah, that's better ... not.

that "60fps thing" is vertical synchronization with your monitors refresh rate. Go into Doom3 video setting, and turn the "Vsync" option to "off".. congratulations, you're no longer constrained to 60fps!!

If on the other hand you meant the frequency at which physics is calculated, then there is nothing unusual about. To get things working consistently, its the only way to go. BF2 uses 100Hz physics, if I recall.

FYI: problems with time based physics... remember Q3. Depending on what your frame rate was, you could jump different heights, and different distances.. hmm.. not very fair to everyone, no? This has been exploited prodigously in Enemy Territory: ET PRO... and is called trick jumping.
