It's one of the most anticipated Xbox 360 games this year and next week Capcom releases their long awaited "zombie in a mall" action title Dead Rising. FiringSquad got a chance to chat briefly with producer Yutaka Haruki to find out a little bit more about Dead Rising.
FiringSquad: Capcom has a history of zombie and horror games. How did the idea for Dead Rising come about?
Yutaka Haruki: I went back to square one, and thought about how zombies really don’t have to be all that scary.
FiringSquad: How hard was it to create a game that allowed so much freedom for the player?
Yutaka Haruki: It was really, extremely, no wait, terribly difficult. But we were able to pull it off and come up with a game with an unprecedented amount of freedom. When you play it you can pretty much do anything you want, play it any way you want.
FiringSquad: What can you tell us about the storyline and missions that the player will have to do in Dead Rising?
Yutaka Haruki: The main goal is to get to the bottom of the whole incident. In order to facilitate that, we use a “case” system that can help the player move forward. But the real fun comes from putting the cases on hold for a while to go wild taking out zombies. You can play it over and over and play it differently each time.
FiringSquad: The visuals in the game are incredible. What can you tell us about the graphical features that Dead Rising takes advantage of?
Yutaka Haruki: If you feel like you’re in a real mall when you play the game, then we’ve done a good job. There are well over 1000 items in the game you can pick up and put to use.
FiringSquad: Are there any plans to release a demo of the game via Xbox Live and if so what will it contain?
Yutaka Haruki: We are planning a playable demo, although we have not determined what will be included.
FiringSquad: Will there be any additional content available for download for Dead Rising after its release?
Yutaka Haruki: Players will be able to download new outfits.
FiringSquad: Finally is there anything else you wish to say about Dead Rising?
Yutaka Haruki: I am grateful for the hard work the people at Microsoft have put in to make it so easy to create games for their hardware. I don’t think it would have been quite as fun if we hadn’t been able to push the hardware to get as many zombies on the screen at once.
