» Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Review

A few weeks ago we took at look at the performance of Intel's latest Core 2 CPUs, the Core 2 Extreme X6800 and Core 2 Duo E6700, finding them to be excellent performers. But what if you don't have the budget to spend $500+ on a new CPU? This is where Intel's Core 2 Duo E6400 comes in. It ships with lower clock speeds and a smaller L2 cache, but as you'll see in today's benchmarks, it still puts up respectable numbers. In fact, with a little bit of overclocking (how does a 1.3GHz overclock sound?) it will actually outrun a Core 2 Extreme. See how this CPU performs in comparison to the latest and greatest, as well as older CPUs like the Athlon 64 X2 4800 and Athlon 64 3500+ in both single-GPU and multi-GPU setups in this review!

» Does anyone have the same setup?
I have exactly the same setup as the article except I'm using OCZ Platinum PC2-6400 2GB.

The ASUS P5W DH Deluxe bios is a bit confusing so I was only able to OC up a bit. I'm going to flash the bios with the latest version and see if it makes a difference.

Should I make a thread on the forum so that people can reply to this post easily?

» E6300 vs E6400
great review, i will go with core 2. i was thinking "why bother? i can now get one of those X2 5000+s so cheap now" but now i realize their toast. only oc to 3Ghz top :( i like the 3.3 :).

but why go with this when your paying $100 (over an E6300 on an E6400) for just an extra multiplier?

are they're locks on the multipliers? how high is the max for an E6400 and how high for an E6300?

and i spose the unified L2 cache doesnt make it any easier to unlock it :\

Yes, all Core 2 Duos have locked multipliers, only the Extreme has an unlocked multipler.

The multiplier on the E6400 is 8.0, while the C2D E6300 has a locked multiplier of 7.0.

Since the E6400 has a higher multiplier, you don't have to crank the FSB up as much to get a good OC. Just to get 3.0GHz out of an E6300 requires an FSB speed of 430MHz.

...and you don't have to spend $400 bucks on ram either. :D It's gotta run minimum 2x the bus, so if you're gonna hit even 2800Mhz w/ 6300, you've got ta have 800Mhz ram. Want 3200Mhz? Gotta hit 915Mhz on the ram.

My Patriot PDC22G5300LLK (667Mhz) hit 800Mhz w/ a small bump in voltage, but doesn't care to move any higher. (at least not without messing with latencies) In this case, a 6400 gets me 400Mhz more.

tomshardware has quite different results with COD2 (1024x768) also using X1900XTX. Check it out in their FX62@3.05Ghz vs X6800@3.66Ghz article.

Ofcourse its quite easy to explain the difference. Firingsquad timedemo supposedly has a lot of smoke bombs going off.. hence much more GPU demanding.

deimos: Yes, if you refer to the CoD 2 benchmarking article then you'll know pretty much everything about our custom demo. I've decided to switch to a new demo for CoD 2 and you'll see it in my next article. In hindsight I think the demo I used previously may have been too intense, at the time I thought it would scale well with faster hardware but it seems like it's not.

» I'd still go with the 6600
It makes more sense to go with the 6600 because of the double cache size. Less than $100 more and you'd still have a ton of overclock ability and twice the cache probably outperforming the 6400 in all tests. Seems to be the biggest bang for your buck to me.

Overclocking results
Call of Duty:
negligible difference between 2.13Ghz and 3.4Ghz.. completely GPU limited.. likewise on previous pages nearly all Athlon64s have the same results.

Oblivion HDR outdoors:
Both 2.13Ghz and 3.4Ghz give about 80fps.. if you turn back, you will see that ALL processors give 80fps.. its completely GPU limited.

CF results at 1600x1200.. COD2, Quake4, Oblivion:
Well, no surprise there... high resolutions and AA or HDR put enormous stress on video cards. If there were any differences, particularly with COD2, it would be a huge shock.

Why are the results like that? Well, lets say that it takes the GPU 50 msec to draw a complete frame, and it cant go any faster than that. Now, before the video card can do each frame it waits for the processor to do the physics, AI, driver overhead, etc (concurrently).. if it takes a 2.13Ghz processor 40msec to do all that, then we say that we are GPU limited.. for 10msec the processor is waiting for the video card to finish. If we used the overclocked processor, it would take it only 25msec.. but it still has to wait till the video card is finished.. so it waits 25msec (more).

Now, if you had a video card, which is much much faster, and it only took it 20 msec (instead of 50 msec) to do each frame, then the processors would be the limiting factor, and thus with the 2.13Ghz processor you would see only a small fps boost (50msec vs 40msec), BUT with the 3.4Ghz processor taking only 25msec, the frame rate will double (from 50msec).
