There seem to be a ton of sci-fi or WWII first person shooters out in stores but not too many set in the modern world. Developer 4DRulers and publisher Dreamcatcher, who last teamed up to release Gore, are teaming once again for Patriot, which has the US National Guard take on a terrorist plot on US soil. FiringSquad got a chance to chat briefly with Dreamcatcher producer Mike Adams to get some of the first info about Patriot.
FiringSquad: First, how did the idea for Patriot come about?
Mike Adams: Joel Huenink, the brains behind the entire project, served in the National Guard for more than 8 years. Joel, thought that with terrorism being so ‘in our faces’ these days, it could potentially make for a perfect ‘what if’ scenario for a game. Something that we could all relate to, and something that could be somewhat believable.
FiringSquad: What can you tell us about the storyline for the game?
Mike Adams: The whole idea of the game is that you are a member of the National Guard called in to duty as the United States comes under attack by several terrorist cells. These terrorists have positioned bombs, each armed with enough nuclear strength to level an entire city. Each of these bombs detonate simultaneously, destroying major cities across the country. The terrorists have also targeted military bases, power plants and police stations, crippling much of the country. Your company manages to regroup and become vigilante in fighting for the freedom of the nation.
FiringSquad: What will the locations and missions in Patriot be like?
Mike Adams: There are 9 levels set in familiar urban settings such as residential neighborhoods, sewers, condominiums, shopping malls and many more. Each level will be mission based, from truck escort missions, de-fusing bombs, to hostage rescues.
FiringSquad: What kinds of weapons and items will be used in the game?
Mike Adams: There is quite the variety of weapons within the game. We have M9 pistols, AK47’s, M60’s, Grenades, Hammers, MP25’s which shoot 25 rounds per second – among others.
You will also need to keep your strength up by finding MRE’s (Meal Ready to Eat), and be sure to find other items necessary to continue your fight --- body armor, helmets, ammo bins, etc…
FiringSquad: What sorts of enemies and characters will we see in the game?
Mike Adams: Suicide bombers, enemies with a wide range of weaponry, from pistols to MP5’s to rocket launchers. There are also car bombs, land mines, snipers, helicopters … you name it!
FiringSquad: What other unique gameplay elements will the game have that will make it stand out from other first person shooters?
Mike Adams: Well, I think the storyline is quite unique, setting the player up for a battle that feels familiar with a scenario that could potentially occur in our own country. You are thrown into a chaotic, frantic war zone – something people are increasingly growing accustomed to seeing in the news – and now bang, here you are, fighting for the freedom of our nation. There are some large scale battles of more than 20 characters on the screen at once, the AI detects cover and uses it intelligently and is dynamic. No game-play experience is ever identical.
FiringSquad: What is the current status of the game's progress and when will it be released?
Mike Adams: We are currently wrapping things up as we approach our scheduled release date. Look for a Fall release in Europe, and a Winter release here in the U.S.
