» ATI's Radeon X1950 XTX CrossFire: Quad SLI killer?

Last week we took a look at the performance of ATI's Radeon X1950 XTX and found it to be a terrific performer. But what about X1950 XTX CrossFire? Can two Radeon X1950 XTX cards running in CrossFire mode actually outperform NVIDIA's vaunted Quad SLI technology? The answer is yes and no. For details on that topic, as well as ATI HDR+AA benchmarks in Oblivion, you won't want to miss today's article!

» ATI HORRIBLE
I have two Radeon X1950XTX in Crossfire setup and they are total garbage. I wasted my money, so you dont have to.

» single against dual is just wrong
Brandon, why do you compare single GPU against dual GPU and call it an equal comparison?

And, why do you leave out cards in certain comparisons. In order for a test to valid you have to include the numbers, no matter what you believe them to be. Your basically shot yourself in the foot and invalidated the whole test.

Also, why test at that 2400x1500 res. Any game player knows the optimum resolution for gaming no matter what video setup is either 1280x1024, or 1440x1024 (? I don't use wide screen so I forget the exact res here). Especially since there is no LCD monitor that can display that resolution. This resolution you push is not usefull or relavent to the scores.

Brandon, you keep goofing up on these tests. I'm really starting to think you've lost your edge. I hope you improve in the future (and don't mouth off about it in your article either, that makes you look bad.)

» This is not a single against dual comparison
CrossFire = Two ATI Radeon X1950 XTX cards
Quad SLI = Two GeForce 7950 GX2 cards (Four G71 GPUs)

The "optimum" resolution for gaming is going to vary from person-to-person based on the monitor that you have and your underlying hardware.

For full 7950 4xAA benches, read this article:

Read the test, do not just look at the pictures.

"Before we get started, we should note one quick item: 4xAA testing. We’re going to exclude Quad SLI from most of these tests, as we’ve already shown you that the GeForce 7950 GX2 Quad SLI cards aren’t even capable of outperforming a GeForce 7900 GTX SLI config in most situations with 4xAA/16xAF, so we’re going to give ATI the edge here by default (with the exception of F.E.A.R. and Quake 4, two of the only applications that we test with which scale well under 4xAA for Quad SLI)."

They did show Quad-SLI numbers, just not 4x.

To FS: I am very happy you guys stressed the cards. Using TRAA/AAA is what I use. Using HQ is what I use. Using SLIAA/SuperAA is what I use. Using HDR+AA is what I use. Very glad to see you stressing the cards, huge step up.

In 2 months all this is obsolete. Let's just stop worrying about the next hardware upgrade. What I'm curious about is what games are worth playing .. you know .. gameplay .. fun.

WOW.
Long time ago, 32bit was the thing, but it was conquered. Next came T&L, which GF2 laid to rest. Folks didn't dare raise the resolution, until GF4 came along, and we maxed out our displays. Next came AA, which everbody started using ever since 9700/9800 minimized the performance hit. Not to mention that by then everybody already gamed with AF maxed out 16x. And when 6800's came around, we finally had the pixel and vertex shader muscle to play games in all their glory. And the final stepping stone, X1900's and 7900's to make HDR playable. And SLI/Crossfire brings it all together.

So now, that we can play with all the game details MAX, AF set to 16x, AA set to 16x, HDR and all the other special effects enabled, and ofcourse resolution at nothing less than 2048x1536, what else is there left??
