» Even More On BF2142 In-Game Ads

Electronic Arts sent over a press note with even more info on how the in-game ads in Battlefield 2142 are supposed to work:

The advertising program in Battlefield 2142 does not access any files which are not directly related to the game. It does not capture personal data such as cookies, account login detail, or surfing history.

BF 2142 delivers ads by region. The advertising system uses a player’s IP address to determine the region of the player, assisting to serve the appropriate ads by region and language. For instance, a player in Paris might be presented with ads in French. The information collected will not be repurposed for other uses.

Battlefield 2142 also tracks “impression data” related to in-game advertisements: location of a billboard in the game, brand advertised, duration of advertisement impression, etc. This information is used to help advertisers qualify the reach of a given advertisement.

Hell yeah! If this system was good enough to market things specifically to me, it would look at my browser history and i'd be getting some pretty nice billboards.

They are just following through on what "the man" has really wanted to know since the founding of the free internet: what kind of porn you are looking at.

» DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!
I loved BF1942. I loved BF2.

I will NEVER buy the abomination of EA greed known as Bf2142.

Say NO to dynamic in-game ads. Say NO to hack-job cash-in mods from EA.

Send a message that you HATE EA's direction, and boycott 2142.

If they showed some Quality Assurance concerns with BF2 then they might be getting a greater number of game purchases and not have to go the way of the ad revenue support model. They alienated a bunch of people with their lack of service in addressing BF2 issues and now they are continuing that tradition here as a result. Next, they'll blame the PC gaming market for their selfish failures.

Or they will blame the pirates, like all other media corporation do when they don't make as much money as they feel entitled to.

I hope I cleared this up for you. If you register the game and except the EULA then you agree to have EA track you by your name, address, phone number. email address and IP address. Also you allow EA to look at what hardware and software you have on your computer.
